My sources have informed me that illicit dumping of garden rubbish etc has been taking place in St. Peter’s churchyard. The scale of this is probably very small, and I would not be surprised if the items concerned have merged seamlessly with the pile of authentic churchyard rubbish. Nevertheless, I am wondering whether we should display a good-humoured notice warning those concerned that they have been seen and gently saying that we would like them to stop.
Any suggestions for suitable wording?
I too have noticed an increase in fly tipping around the village recently. Last night when out running, I noticed an unsightly pile of old tyres on the lane above the sledging field going towards Pikehall (these had appeared in the past 24 hours), and further up that lane there is a chest freezer that has been unceremoniously dumped over the fence.
Fly tipping is an appallingly lazy and digusting activity, and I for one will be keeping a close watch on the church yard in future (we are ideally placed!). With regard to the sign, I guess we don’t want big signs all over the church yard saying “No Flytipping!”, but I agree something must be done. Perhaps this posting is enough to make people realise that it isn’t going un-noticed, and to stop. There was, after all, a community collection on Saturday, and further one’s are advertised here on the blog.
How about a two-pronged approach:
THOU SHALT NOT FLY TIP!
BLOGGERS ARE PATROLLING THIS AREA!
Although the following information won’t help the churchyard, it should be noted that fly tipping is illegal and Derbyshire Dales District Council have the objective of removing such rubbish within a day of it being reported. See their web page: http://www.derbyshiredales.gov.uk/Environment/StreetCareCleaning/Flytipping.htm
To report a fly-tip please contact the Environment Hotline on 01629 761215, email environmenthotline@derbyshiredales.gov.uk or write to Environmental Services Department, Street Cleansing, Derbyshire Dales District Council, Town Hall, Matlock, Derbyshire, DE4 3NN.
if you look at those tyres that have been dumped it can been seen that a nice mark has been left on the road and then there were catapillar tracks from that point on wards. (not sure if the tracks are still there)
the freezer is also fantastic as it was first dumped in a field on the other side of the road and some how managed to get across the road up the bank and over the fence it isn’t even on wheels
It’s now over a week since I reported the fly tipped tyres on Highway Lane to the enivorment hotline – guess what? They’re still there. – Not so hot then!!
The subtle approach does not seem to have worked in the Churchyard.
