The temporary closure of the B5056 has been put back to Wednesday (17th June). This closure is for investigation of the landslip north of the Bentley Brook Inn, prior to undertaking repairs at a future date. It is likely to be closed into next week (so this will implicate Sunday’s Open Gardens traffic in the diversions), but Highways will get back to us to confirm this. If we have more news today we will update this post, otherwise we will keep you updated with further posts as news comes in.

Looking at the two alternative routes from Parwich to Ashbourne, there seems to be very little difference between the Bradbourne/Kniveton route and the Alsop/Fenny Bentley route. Here’s what Google Maps says about them (assuming a route from Creamery Lane to St John’s Street):
The usual B5056 route: 6.6 miles, 12 minutes.
Via Alsop/Fenny Bentley: 8.7 miles, 18 minutes.
Via Bradbourne/Kniveton: 9.1 miles, 18 minutes.
Which alternative route do people favour? Or will the diversions work best if 50% of drivers take one route, and 50% take the other?
The official diversion, if going to Ashbourne, is to go north on the B5056 to Grange Mill (the Holly Bush) then turn left along the A5012 (Via Gellia) to Newhaven, joining the A515.
The route through Netherton (Nether Bradbourne) and joining the Kniveton road (B5035) involves less single track road, but is busier than the Alsop en le Dale route. A lot of people take this way to Derby, and you don’t want to be going the wrong way against the morning and evening rushes.
It might make sense for Parwich people to go to Ashbourne through Alsop, but for others to go through Bradbourne. As this helps minimise the extra traffic through the villages, and splits it between Alsop and Bradbourne.
Hopefully quarry traffic will go through neither as both the single track stretches have limited passing places and not very stable edges to the road, with some fair sized drops already.
There are already signs up to say no HGVs through Bradbourne or Parwich, so hopefully we will not see many lorries. Thanks for your guidance about routes into Ashbourne
Does anyone know if the bus time table will change?
I’ve checked the official diversion that Peter mentions, and from Parwich to Ashbourne it would clock in at 20.3 miles / 31 minutes.
For the quarry lorries from Ballidon – and clearly there’s no acceptable alternative for this one – the figures clock in as follows:
Usual B5056 route: 6.2 miles, 12 minutes.
Diversion via Grange Mill and Newhaven: 20 miles, 30 minutes.
