This post and the photos don’t do justice to what was a really good, well attended and excellently organised series of events, nonetheless…
Wakes Friday hosted a “Race Night Triathlon” involving balls, ferrets and “horses”.
The evening’s activities began at Pump Hill with the Ball Race at 7.00 pm sharp. This was followed by the Race Night at the Legion (including the Thoroughbred Ferret Furlong & the Legion Grand National).

The Ball Race involved the release of ~500 tennis balls down Pump Hill. Before the start each ball had been hand-marked with its own number (1-500) and the set of balls was counted, checked and re-checked. Traffic was temporarily stopped as the organisers awaited the first three balls to make it down the hill and out through the wooden funnel.
This years winning balls and winners were:
- 1st – ball no. 107 owned by Carl W (£50)
- 2nd – ball no. 474 owned by Sam S (£25)
- 3rd – ball no. 45 owned by Emma K (£10)
The Ferret Furlong got going at about 8.00. The ferrets and their owners looked a happy bunch – as well as the usual suspects, Miss Amos brought her own ferrets along to join in the fun. There were three heats and each involved three ferrets racing through tubes, with the winner being the first to completely emerge from its tube. The winning ferret from each heat was kept to one side to participate in the grand final. Sadly, I didn’t find out the ferrets’ names and so I can’t tell you which one was the grand champion.
Interspersed between the ferret races and continuing afterwards the “horse racing” got underway inside. Bets were placed and there were winners and losers! For the final race each of the six horses were auctioned off with the lucky owner (a consortium of Parwich ladies) taking around £70 in prize money.
Huge thanks should go to the organisers (and the ferrets!) for providing such a great and well planned evening.

Sorry that you can’t enlarge any of the photos at the moment, I’m trying to get this resolved… (1-45pm should now be fine)
