What a fantastic Wakes week this year! Really good turn outs and great participation, and marvellous weather. The only event cut short was the Children’s Sports, and even then we had the compensation of some dramatic cloudscapes.
A massive thank you to the Carnival & Recreation Committee and the other organisers for their generous commitment of time and energy.
Here is a look back over the seven days as seen through the eyes of extremely popular parwich.org. Just over 8,000 page views this week alone! Photos and links to the week’s events….
Saturday 27th – Odd Fellows Parade, Village Market, Carnival & Funfair
The day started with spots of rain, but the OddFellow marchers soon chased them off. The sun emerged to shine on the village market and soon blazed over the Carnival, and what a turnout, from both villagers and campers.

Sunday 28th – Campsite Service & Sports, Teas in the Churchyard, Treasure Hunt and Bar-B-Q
Monday 29th – Children’s Sports
Despite Dennis not having Brian McK’s support this year and having to work twice as hard, the Children’s Sports started very well. The sun shone; there were some hotly contested races in all the age groups……. but the evening had to be cut short as storm clouds approached and the lightning flashed.

Tuesday 30th – Parwich Hill Race
As always a fantastic night, the Hill Race was well supported, and no competitors were misplaced this year. In all three races, the times of those first home were faster than last year. Attracting participants and spectators from the surrounding district and further afield, this evening shows Parwich at its very best.

Wednesday 1st – Parwich Strongest Man
The Strongest Man, though this was its fifth year, is still one of Wakes newer events. However Rob and Shaun are undoubtedly up to organising an event that rivals the Hill Race in attracting visitors. Competitors were up on last year, coming from our immediate area and as far a field as Matlock. The queue for the bar was stretching out into the street, but everyone will be back again next year.

Thursday 2nd – Film Show & Wheelbarrow Race
The film ‘Spirit: the Stallion of the Cimarron’ was enjoyed by some twenty or more youngsters: a good turnout for Parwich Film, especially on such a sunny evening. With perhaps the best weather of the week, though with numbers down on last year (both competitors, no ladies at all this year, and spectators), the evening passed without hitch and was much enjoyed by all.
Wakes Friday hosted a “Race Night Triathlon”; real balls, real ferrets and ‘horses’; fun far all and profit for some.Huge thanks should go to the organisers (and the ferrets!) for providing such a great and well planned evening.
Also a big thank you to all who contributed reports and photos to parwich.org helping to make it our busiest week ever. Although we did not capture every event we covered most. Finally, if anyone has any more photographs of Wakes they would like to share, especially the Sunday or of previous years, do send them in to parwich@hotmail.co.uk

It really does seem to have been one of the best Wakes Weeks ever. Wonderful to see all the old faces return – friends who have moved away, children returning as adults and new faces joining in. Just lovely!
13/7/2009 Just reading about the ‘Wakes week’ celebrations as we have just returned from a week in the south of England. You really can not beat the village of Parwich in Derbyshire for atmosphere and friendliness especially in full flood of ‘wakes’. Yes, we too had another lovely return visit and it was great meeting up again with old friends. Thank you for making us feel so welcome. The children really enjoyed themselves and we all hope to be back next year. All the best to everyone. B&B & Deb
