Yesterday afternoon (Friday 24th July) a man in a car stopped near the Memorial Hall to ask an eight year old girl directions to another village. The chances are this was just what it appears to be, someone asking for directions, however the mother, when the child told her about it, was left with an uneasy feeling. Consequently she asked us to put this post on the Blog.
One of the things we value in our community is a sense of security, and the freedom our children have. Nevertheless, it is also important not to be too complacent.

Just a shame the sense of security doesnt stretch as far as this website with all its photos, names, birthdays, etc..
As the mother of the child in question whose birthday was listed on this site, I would just like to point out that at three years old he is not likely to be roaming about the village on his own, my child is secure and taken care of at all times. Also as the chairperson of Stepping Stones I have allowed pictures of the children to be used on this website, should I not?
I do not appreciate the suggestion my child has been made vulnerable by celebrating what is a happy and joyous event
These are interesting comments and we would welcome any further thoughts on on-line security and the site.
We do feel safe in our community, consequently there is a danger that this makes us too complacent.
We do get back to people about posts submitted that identify surnames and phone numbers to ensure those sending them in are sure that is what they want.
Those that have been consulted about the site are keen for a balanced approach, this includes the School and the Pre-School.
Photographs are the most popular aspect of the site and are much appreciated by all including the children. Our current policy is not to exclude photographs of children, but to avoid links between the names of children and their photographs unless we know the family are happy about it.
If individuals or families have any concerns about specific posts relating to them or their children they should contact us straight away.
We are always keen for people to use the comments facility, so do have your say.
Interestingly I was reading about how we should protect ourselves against fraud etc in a National newspaper. Part of the article referred to a web site called lucidintelligence. This was set up by an ex Fraud Squad investigator in his retirement. He was horrified to find out how easy it is to obtain an individual’s details. Anyone can access the first part of the site for free where after following a few steps, you can see if you are high risk. If you wish, you can then pay £10 to see the details that are easily available to would be fraudsters.
The main point of this comment is that when I followed one of the steps (to google myself) I found my phone no and other details were there because they have been on the blog. I guess everyone who is web savvy will realise this normal but it was a bit of a shock to me.
Patti, the disadvantage that you have is that your name is more uncommon – and although Google does list your details – some via the our blog, but also via the Derby Telegraph & their website which have your name & address clearly stated in connection with Tom.
I tried doing a search of various other names in the village & couldn’t find any details of some who are connected with the MH. The problem/advantage of my name is that it is an ordinary one, so after searching the first 10 pages of Google I gave up – and will retire into anonymity
Thanks Jane – I suspect that’s a relief for most people. I am usually very picky about giving out my mobile and email address in conjunction with work but in the spirit of ease of communiucation have given it out with gay abandon to do with the MH – not thinking that it would go outside the village!
