Black Ice – Danger on roads and pavements.
18:40 – Please keep the blog up to date with road conditions, especially as yesterday the A515 seemed to deteriorate during the day.
Thank you to Alice B & Christine G for letting us know that the pavements and roads are extremely icy this morning, so a danger to drivers and pedestrians. The problem is that the the ice looks wet rather than icy.
It has been snowing in Ashbourne since 8.30am and the road via Bradbourne and Kniveton was treacherous – Thanks Cheryl.
Ian P reports no problems at all in Ashbourne this morning.
Road to Buxton and Matlock drivable with extreme car – Black Ice – Thanks Graham & Amanda.
Some snow is settling on the A515 and the Alsop Road, but they remain usable with care (thanks Sue H and Ian P). Having said that, there was an accident this morning, at the junction with Crosslow Lane/Oxdales Farm at Alsop Moor, which involved three vehicles and temporarily blocked both carriageways.
4.30pm – A515 from Ashbourne was OK but there is snow covering the Alsop Road, so take care. This morning a 4WD was unable to get up the hill to Longcliffe. What are conditions like now?
6:30pm – Graham J reports a bad drive back from Buxton on the A515, which doesn’t appear to have been gritted for some time. That and a combination of compacted snow/ice has made for some of the most treacherous driving conditions so far this winter on this road. Buxton-bound was completely snarled up at Alsop Moor, with wagons queued up and unable to get up the hill toward Buxton.
If you’re planning a journey, we recommend checking the BBC Derby travel updates, as these cover our region and are kept fully up to date. We’ve added a permanent link to this page in the “LOCAL LINKS” section, on the right hand sidebar of the blog.

I travelled to Ashbourne via Bradbourne/Brackendale/Kniveton early this morning and it was still freezing rain. Black ice everywhere and very treacherous. Been snowing steadily in Ashbourne since about 8.30am
Journey to Buxton this morning was treacherous due to the black ice, which I discovered early with a triple toe loop outside the back door whilst trying to feed the birds! (no good turn goes unpunished).
Mand had an equally slow journey to Matlock, however all roads are open but MUST be driven slowly and with great care. Heavy braking or sudden turning is a great proof of Newtons First Law, but not to be recommended if a wagon is coming in the opposite direction!
Newtons First Law (for the non-scientists):
” A body continues in its state of rest or MOTION IN A STRAIGHT LINE unless it’s acted on by an external force.”
There was an accident this morning on the A515, at the Crosslow Lane/Oxdales Farm junction at Alsop Moor. Three vehicles were involved, and both carriageways were blocked. The road was re-opened at 10:30am.
I realise this is further afield than the other posts.
A632 Derbyshire – Chesterfield Road closed both ways due to ice and snow between Sandy Lane and Acorn Ridge , in Matlock – 8 accidents/incidents reported.

Just been to and from Tissington along Alsop Rd. Snow is settling on A515 also but fine if you go slowly and really carefully. My micra made it! Sue H
Been to Ashbourne and back this morning. A515 from Alsop was a bit snowy but improved towards Ashbourne. No problems at all in Ashbourne. Just come back via Alsop and still ok to drive, snow settling but only very slowly.
Been to Bradbourne and then Ashbourne via Tissington ford, all straight forward for 4wd but Tissington is slushy & slippy.
Bad journey back from Buxton on the A515 tonight. It doesn’t appear to have been gritted for some time. That and a combination of compacted snow/ice has made for some of the most treacherous driving conditions so far this winter on this road. Buxton bound is completely snarled up at Alsop Moor with wagons queued up unable to get up the hill toward Buxton.
Best stay in doors!
