Today we received a reminder of the dangers of traffic going too fast through our villages, most of our lanes have no pavements and limited or non-existent verges. This is particularly relates to where the road abruptly narrows between the gables of Dam Farm and Church Gates Cottage in the vicinity of the children’s Play Area, with a junction on one side, and an emerging footpath and suddenly ending pavement on the other, all on a bend:
I thought it would be a good idea to post a reminder about watching your speed in the village. Or rather, watching out for the speed of others! There was a coming together of a bus and van on the bend beside Dam Farm this morning (1 vehicle left a 40ft skid mark).
This follows the recent duck fatality at the same location! This is also the point where a public footpath meets the road, where little kiddies might venture out unexpectedly. A small child on a bike, for example, would not be visible from either direction until the last moment. Could you stop in time?

As well as the damage to the two vehicles a garden wall was hit.

Before there was some support on the Blog for a 20mph speed limit in Parwich. Is this still the case?
Personally I feel anyone approaching 30mph by Dam Farm is guilty of dangerous driving!
I agree with you Peter.
Perhaps the blog could run a survey for this again or in the interests of a fuller village opinion as not everyone reads the blog, maybe we need a petition.
Vehicles clearly travel far too fast through the village. The problem undoubtedly starts as vehicles enter Parwich (particularly from the Ashbourne side) – drivers completely ignore the 30 mph speed limit sign.
Something needs to be done urgently – I fear it is only a matter of time before a serious accident occurs.
I am particularly concerned at the speed with which tractors move in and out of the other end of the village from Parwich Dale along Smithy Lane. They are huge vehicles, the road is narrow and farm vehicles are not designed for quick braking. It feels like it is only a matter of time before an animal or person is hit…
I would support us polling the village to see if a 20 mph speed limit is seen as a good idea.
I live outside the village but do enjoy reading your fantastic website. If the community would like help on securing a lower speed limit I suggest you contact the charity Friends of the Peak District for support. Their transport campaigner Anne Robinson has had considerable success on this issue over the years. They can be reached via http://www.friendsofthepeak.org.uk or tel: 0114 266 5822

We ran a poll on this issue in April 2009. The results were as follows:
I think that 30mph is the correct speed limit for Parwich. 27% (12 votes)
I think that the speed limit should be lowered to 20mph. 73% (32 votes)

We have just moved into Alsop-en-le-Dale and notice that cars seem to race through this hamlet quite quickly. Perhaps a little more care needs to be considered as there are farm animals walked along the road and families with children living here.
Just a little reminder note really.
