… and that was on a normal day. I wonder what he’d have made of Wakes Saturday?
Speaking of wakes , is there a programme of events been posted yet??
Hey folks – that’s my blog. Thanks for the link… and thanks for the warm welcome in Parwich. We all had a great time with you.
So, what’s Wakes Saturday?
Oh, nothing too unusual…… A group of 50 -100 men wear white gloves and wands, hold hands and parade around the village behind a brass band, stopping off at various houses, where they are plied with drink. They then go to church, and finish up by consuming large quantities of roast beef.
Usual stuff……….
Forgot to mention, this all starts at 09:30am on the first Saturday after the feast of St. Peter (29th June), and the group of men are called “The Loyal Laural and Crown Lodge of the Independent Order of Oddfellows”.
Unsurprisingly, we just call them “The Oddfellows”.
This is then followed by a carnival of Parwich folks in an enterprising array of costumes and decorated floats, also accompanied by the Nottingham branch of the Caravan Club who have been a welcome bunch of cheerful honarary Parwichians….. and this is just the first day! The week continues with Childrens Sports evening, a Hill Race of national importance, Strongest Man contests, Wheelbarrow Races (mostly drunken) and a variety of ad hoc entertainments.
Traditionally, old Parwich residents and grownup children who have made lives in far flung places try to return for this week of good fun,drinking and old-fashioned country entertainments. It is all arranged by our very hardworking Carnival and Wakes Committee – come along, you would be welcome. Oh, I forgot, there is also a small (very small) fair on the green across from the pub.
