   I have heard cautionary tales regarding the use of carpet as a mulch on allotments. Some allotments do not allow them. Beware chemical dyes leaching out and foam breaking down quite quickly. Perhaps neutral shades of carpet with no foam backing are the way forward? Good luck with the digging!
