What a shame. This event has been a popular and welcome addition to the usual wakes week events over the last few years. Perhaps a risk assessment might be all that is needed to cover the Health and Safety issues? Other villages which had abandoned popular events such as cheese rolling etc because of ‘health and safety’ have now brought them back by popular demand. What next – Shrovetide football?
It’s a shame, indeed – the 2009 report on the Strongest Man contest is one of our Top Ten most read blog posts of all time!
I would just like to clarify that the decision was not made by myself to cancel the Strongman Event this year, I am hoping to organise the event later on in the summer once I have sorted out some proper insurance and details. It is a great event and I am (as well as others) dissapointed that it can’t be held within the Wakes week.
I’m sure that everyone can appreciate that due to the nature of the event and our lets sue culture, proper insurance measures have to be taken as I don’t want to be personally liable.
Due to the fact that insurance incurs a cost, we may have to make a small entrance charge for contestants and spectators. Also the venue may have to change (Still within the village)
Because of this we have decided to make it more of an event.
So please be patient and keeping checking the blog for more details or contestants can ring me on: 07811 379782
Thanks Shaun
Good on you Shaun, for taking the initiative to sort this out!
Really disappointed this is not going ahead. Always look forward to it and it draws a great crowd.
Hopefully this can go ahead as normal next year.
