This well known character at this end of the village went missing on Monday. There are no traces to be seen anywhere. She is very friendly and will slip into someone’s house or hop into a car without any invitation. I am clutching at straws but maybe she has wondered further than normal and lost her route home. If you have seen her (dead or alive) please could you let me know?

She’s a real beauty Fiona. I very much hope that she is found (who could miss her?) or returns home soon. Maybe she’s gone broody, and is sitting on a clutch of eggs in some secret place? I hope so.
Before I kept chickens (I’d always kept geese when I was living in Norfolk) I had no idea how intelligent and characterful they are. One of mine, a beautiful little cuckoo maran, wanders quite far from my garden (they all free range, as yours). She is a bit of a loner – sings to herself as she explores. I’ve always been fearful that one day we shall not see her return – although she’s persisted in her wanderings unmolested for two years so far.
Do keep us up-to-date.
Hi Fiona
as you know this super little chicken is a regular visitor to my place, I hope she is found very soon. Terry
Sounds silly, but have you looked up as well? Could she be in a tree – maybe got spooked by something?
Thank you all for your kind words. I have looked up as well Debbie although she is not the sort to get spooked easily! I fear the worst as, although she wandered as far as Terry’s on her regular visits, she always returned home at night. One of the down sides of being very free range but the up side was that she enjoyed herself even if her time was short.
I completely agree about true free-ranging Fiona. In my eyes, a far happier, but (perhaps) shorter life is far preferable to a longer life in abject misery.
I wonder still whether she might be broodily secretive on a clutch of eggs? I hope so.
