With over 70% of the UK’s resident and regular migrant butterfly species in decline over recent years, we wondered which species have you spotted in your garden this year? What were they feeding on?
Thank you to David G for these lovely images.

The numbers of butterflies in my garden have been quite disappointing up till a couple of weeks ago.
This is the first year in 10+ years that I haven’t seen the impressive migrant Hummingbird Hawkmoth on the red valerian. I did see a couple of Gatekeepers, the usual Brimstone, Tortoiseshells, Green-veined, Small and Large Whites, and -I think- a Dark Green Fritillary (which isn’t dark green…). After a slow start there was a bit of an explosion on the flowering buddleia with 15-20 butterflies all vying for a place: Red Admirals, Peacocks, Painted Ladies, Tortoiseshells and various Whites.
I’ve also seen Speckled Woods, Orange Tip, Meadow Browns and Ringlets at Carsington.
My knowledge is pretty basic, but if anyone is interested in going on the rota (next year) to do a butterfly count on a couple of short routes at Carsington, then contact the Derbyshire Wildlife Trust or let me know (390440). There is always room for more people.
