This morning I collected my fourth rescue hedgehog from Derby Hedgehog Rescue, I got to know the wonderful lady who runs the rescue when I found a baby hog in my garden in trouble., she nursed him back to health and he returned to Wheatsheaf cottage with a friend who needed a home.
I collected another female just before the winter who had reached the optimum 600 grams to be able to hibernate safely.
This spring they have visited the feeding station regularly, the garden has gaps in the fencing to allow the hogs to roam the distances they need, I don’t use any chemicals in the garden and like to think they may eat some of the slugs and snails.
Hedgehog numbers are declining why not help them out by putting out a shallow dish of water and if you can put food out for them, either cat food (not the fishy sort) or even better specialist hedgehog food. Jill L

I’ve got 2 hedgehogs that have lived in my wood bunker all Winter Jill. I fed them up with cat biscuits last Autumn. They reappeared around March/April time. I’ve not seen them for around a week and they don’t seem to be eating their biscuits. Do they wander off or do you think they are finding their own food?
Hi,
They will find their own food, worms, slugs etc. If people have been watering their gardens, the earth will be soft.
Have a look on Hedgehog Highway, lots of information on their site. Please remember to still put water down, they get dehydrated quickly. If a hedgehog is seen out in the daytime, it needs your assistance. Vets do nit charge for treating hedgehogs. SallyAnn Derby Hedgehog rescue, Mackworth runs an amazing rescue. I release hogs for her in Tissington. Hogs love scrambled egg mixed with water NOT milk. Milk makes them ill.
Funnily enough, the female who had babies last year has not been to feed for about a week, she did the same last year, so perhaps they go off to look for a mate, the lady from the rescue told me they can travel several miles in one night. I would think they will be back.
She returned about July with three hoglets in tow.
Thanks for the info Adele & Jill. I didn’t know about the scrambled eggs (made with water). Yes, I do leave fresh water out all the time. I actually found some hedgehog dung near the wood bunker yesterday (I had only hosed the yard the day before) so they probably are still about. There were 2 last October. One was bigger than the other so I assumed they were a couple??
