Eleanor the Great follows Eleanor Morgenstein (June Squibb, herself 95 years old), a 94-year-old woman navigating grief and loneliness. After the loss of her best friend, she relocates from Florida to New York City to live with her daughter and grandson. Seeking companionship, she accidentally wanders into a support group for Holocaust survivors and begins passing off her late friend’s survival stories as her own to fit in. This escalates when she forms a close bond with Nina (Erin Kellyman), a young journalism student who wants to feature Eleanor’s experiences in an article. As she navigates the fallout with her family, the survivors, and Nina, she is eventually offered forgiveness and the opportunity to make amends.
