After The Gold Rush.

Thanks to Kevin S. for the following report.

NOTE: There are a couple of videos of Saturday night’s screening – complete with live organ accompaniment and audience laughter! – at the end of this post. Click “Continue Reading” to access them.

The number of cars parked around the green suggested that something very different and special was awaiting us, as we walked to St Peter’s last night to watch The Gold Rush, with organ accompaniment by Christopher Harrison. There were plenty of familiar faces sitting in the pews, but there were very many new faces too. It soon became apparent that the plethora of enthusiastic visitors had come from film clubs around Derbyshire, having heard about last night’s unique event.

The rapturous applause for Christopher’s accompaniment on organ and piano, and for the sound effects created by Martin and Arnold, were clear testament to a remarkable evening. What’s more, over £200 was raised for the church restoration fund.

The atmosphere of the darkened church, the excellent silent film and Christopher’s witty organ playing combined to magical effect. Oh, and there were great nibbles (from local cooks) and wine (courtesy of Waitrose) during the interval too.

gold rush

Charles Chaplin made The Gold Rush (1925) out of the most unlikely sources for comedy. The idea came to him when he was viewing pictures of the 1896 Klondike gold rush, and was struck by the image of an endless line of prospectors snaking up the Chilkoot Pass, the gateway to the gold fields. parwich film update

parwich film‘s 2009/10 season got off to a good start last night with the film The Young Victoria.  Some thirty people came along, quieting our worries that a change of venue would adversely affect numbers.  As Jane pointed out in her comment the film’s visuals fitted particularly well with the Victorian architecture of St Peter’s.

The projector worked well in the Church and the slightly smaller screen did not impair the visual impact of the film.  The sound quality was not perfect, but raising up the speakers on tables at the interval was a great improvement.  Hopefully this will sorted for our next regular film night.

Certainly sound quality will not be an issue for the next showing, which is a special one-off fund-raiser for the Church (Sat 14th November, apologies for confusion over the date in previous notices).  It is the silent film ‘Gold Rush’ starring Charlie Chaplin, and it will be accompanied by live organ music played by the Rev Christopher Harrison.

There will be no regular film night in November, with the next Friday night showing to be in December (date to be announced later).  Do let us know what films you would like to see this season, though it should be pointed out that the Exorcist and the Omen have already been suggested, and rejected.

Film Night – Friday

With wonderful photography of the Australian countryside, this Romantic epic film is set in northern Australia at the beginning of World War II, where an English aristocrat inherits a cattle station the size of Maryland. When English cattle barons plot to take her land, she reluctantly joins forces with a rough-hewn stock-man to drive 2,000 head of cattle across hundreds of miles of the country’s most unforgiving land, only to still face the bombing of Darwin, Australia, by the Japanese forces that had attacked Pearl Harbour only months earlier.  A truly enjoyable film.

Friday night – Film Night

Our film selection this Friday has just won the award for BEST BRITISH FILM at the Bafta awards, so don’t miss it!

On August 7th 1974, a young Frenchman named Philippe Petit stepped out on a wire illegally rigged between New York’s twin towers, then the world’s tallest buildings. After nearly an hour dancing on the wire, he was arrested, taken for psychological evaluation, and brought to jail before he was finally released. Following six and a half years of dreaming of the towers, Petit spent eight months in New York City planning the execution of the coup. Aided by a team of friends and accomplices, Petit was faced with numerous extraordinary challenges: he had to find a way to bypass the WTC’s security; smuggle the heavy steel cable and rigging equipment into the towers; pass the wire between the two rooftops; anchor the wire and tension it to withstand the winds and the swaying of the buildings. The rigging was done by night in complete secrecy. At 7:15 AM, Philippe took his first step on the high wire 1,350 feet above the sidewalks of Manhattan…

Part documentary part re-enactment, this gripping film received 100% review consensus on the film web-site, Rotten Tomatoes, and winner of Best Documentary, and was nominated for an Oscar.
