District councillors agreed last night (12 August) to provide extra funding to Freedom Leisure to enable the reopening of Derbyshire Dales leisure centres in Ashbourne, Matlock and Wirksworth with reduced hours and new Covid safety measures. View the meeting again on our YouTube channel. The actual reopening date and operating hours will be announced by Freedom Leisure after a period of mobilisation.

A fourth leisure facility operated on behalf of the council by Freedom – Bakewell Swimming Pool – will remain closed for a further two months after councillors heard that the small size of the facility made current social distancing requirements unworkable.

At the same meeting, councillors agreed to provide financial support to Serco to help the implementation of a new waste & recycling contract. The costs of the unavoidable impact of delays to the delivery of new refuse collection vehicles – associated with manufacturer shutdowns during Covid-19 – are being shared with Serco.  Read more >>

Following the disruption of services since the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic, an Extraordinary Meeting of the District Council will be held on Wednesday 12 August to consider a report seeking approval for extra funding – requested by both Freedom Leisure and Serco – in order to reopen leisure centres here in the Derbyshire Dales and to fully implement the new waste & recycling contract. Residents’ garden waste questions answered
With garden waste collections now operating to schedule across the Derbyshire Dales during the continuing coronavirus pandemic, local residents are being reminded there will be a charge for the service from April next year. More than half of all UK councils now charge residents for garden waste collections, including 39 of the 50 councils most similar to Derbyshire Dales District Council.
