Don’t forget the History Society are holding an informal meeting at the Sycamore tomorrow (Thursday 10th April) at 8pm in the back room. The idea is to come along and share any information you have or memories you have or share any topics you want to find out more about. The idea is to explore recent history: your life time, your parents’ life time and your grandparents’ life time.
We have set no specific agenda as we want to see what interests the people who come along. However if no one has any specific topics in mind we have several fall backs, including local working life, the carbide shed and the Methodist Chapel. This is a new venture for the History Society, but if successful we will hold more such events.

When we were renvating our house (Church View) a few years ago, we uncovered some strange small bore copper piping under the floor. Fred Knight who was working with us on the project thought it may be a gas pipe supply for carbide lighting. It seems possible, since the Church wardens cottages (which comprise our house) were built at the same time as the Church (1863 or thereabouts), and would have been an appropriate building for a gas light supply. Also, we have lot’s of exposed wood, and carved masonry in the house which is certainly considerably older than the house – we wondered if parts of the old Norman church might have been used as construction materials for the Chrurch wardens cottages.
However, with a construction date of 1863, there is no chance of personal memories confirming this.
