We would like to thank Dorothy for all the hard work she has put into creating a woodland garden on the Parish Council land in front of Parwich Hall.
The Parish Council were bold enough to go for this land in the centre of the village when it came up for auction a couple of years ago, and Dorothy certainly rose to the challenge of maintaining it.
What we know of the history of this land was that it was described as ‘new gardens’ on the 1843 Tithe map. Perhaps the Evans family, with their more urban industrial background had the idea of turning it into allotments when they bought the Parwich Estate. It continued as allotments until the 1930s. Lady Crompton-Inglefield had Harry Hopkinson plant the trees in the 1950s(?) to block her view of the separate garden at the lower end, as it was then used to butcher venison amongst other things. Hear hear! Dorothy really has done an amazing job, and the woodland garden in full bloom never fails to lift my spirits.
I agree! Dorothy has worked fantastically hard over the years, clearing all the saplings and the weeds, replanting the bulbs and generally creating a beautiful public garden. She deserves an award!?
