Parwich Parish Council has passed on the following information from Derbyshire Sport promoting their Jog Derbyshire campaign that seeks to promote health through setting up local jogging groups.
If you are interested in the possibility of a local jogging group read on.
What is jog Derbyshire?
Jog Derbyshire is the county’s very own jogging network. It is a regional initiative delivered by Derbyshire Sport and supported by Sport England, England Athletics and Derbyshire PCT.
- VISION:An established network of locally based, community focussed, easily accessible groups enabling everybody to participate in regular activity and make healthier lifestyle choices
- AIM: To encourage healthier lifestyle choices and increase participation in regular activity through enjoyable, supported jogging sessions.
- CURRENT STATUS:Jog Derbyshire is still in the development phase. The first Jog Leader training session is booked and we are currently in the process of recruiting leaders and establishing group locations. The project will be launched countywide in January.
Why launch Jog Derbyshire in your area?
It is estimated that 60% of the population do not participate in levels of physical activity that promotes good health. Inactivity is a major risk factor for diseases such as coronary heart disease, which may place a serious/major burden on the health of the population.
Exercise can also contribute to:
- Increasing self esteem and energy levels
- Lowering levels of stress and depression
- Increasing muscular efficiency and emotional well being
You have decided to launch Jog Derbyshire in your area, what next?
Jog Leaders
You would need to identify and recruit suitable people to be jog leaders (see attached leader specifications). They would then go on the Jog England training course that includes the ‘UK Athletics Fitness in Running and Walking Course’, the cost per person is usually £70 but we have obtained some funding so the first courses will be free. This course also provides public liability insurance for the jog leader to take Jog Derbyshire groups.
Jogging Groups
Jogging groups can be set up almost anywhere. Only your imagination limits the possibilities. Once you have decided on where and when you want to run your group, and who you want to aim it at, let us know and we can help to promote it. This can be done via email, posters, road shows etc. Jog Derbyshire provides all the promotional literature which can be adapted to suit each partner and can also assist with press releases.
Types of Jogging groups
Jogging groups can be run as part of a larger organisation such as sports clubs or societies as a way of creating more opportunities for members and as a way of increasing revenue. Some groups may have specific people to target such as women only or dads and lads, others will involve all members of the wider community. An example of a club group could be parents going jogging whilst the children have a coaching session, or possibly as a way top keep fit out of season. Summer runs for the Rugby team or winter runs for the Cricket team. The groups may also be a way of engaging more with the local community by opening up sessions to the general public as well as club members.
Jog Derbyshire Administration
Setting up and monitoring a Jog Derbyshire group is a simple process. Each group and Leader will be registered with Derbyshire Sport. The leader will then be responsible for registering new participants and monitoring each group session. This information will be fed back to Jog Derbyshire for monitoring and evaluation purposes.
Jog Derbyshire Support
The jogging groups are run locally by the local partner, however Jog Derbyshire provide the necessary support, advice and literature. We keep in touch regularly, via email and visits and plan to organise regular forums to get all the jog leaders and Jog Derbyshire members together.
