It is a female Wood Wasp (most likely Urocerus gigas). The long tail is its ovipositor, which is used to drill into tree bark to lay her eggs. Although it looks fierce, it is completely harmless – unless of course, you are a tree!
Ah…that explains why it was hanging around the woodpile! I thought that was a stinger at the end of its tail, and we wondered if it was some sort of hornet.
