From our Bowling correspondent in the thick of the action:
How long can the IOC ignore Crown Green Bowling?
Winning two gold medals in Sunday’s Square Robin event was great, but last night it was the turn of Team PB to do their stuff. And boy, what stuff they did.
As you all know, they play in the most demanding league there is, namely the second division of the Matlock and District League. Teams from all over – Bradwell and Buxton, to mention but two – play in this extremely competitive league. Tickets for the clash between Team PB and Whitworth Park B were more difficult to get than rocking horse manure. You had to be invited down to Parsons Croft to see the Match. Not even royalty got in.
After a nervous start, the first two pairs settled down and played out of their skins to give Team PB two games to nil. The final two pairs then took to the green, anchored by Team PB’s fabulous captain Dawn Allsopp. Dawn and Dot Hart clawed their way back from the brink of defeat, knowing that one mistake would give the game to the opposition. You could have cut the air with a hot air balloon. Finally, they nailed the twentieth end to bring about the victory. The noise from the crowd last Sunday was loud, but it was monumental last night. Oh, and the last pair won as well. Final score: Team PB 84, Whitworth Park B 41. Where will it all end? After such a glittering career, Dawn says she is going to carry on for a few more seasons.
It’s the big one tomorrow. The Greenaway Charity match at Wirksworth. Team PB have got three players who qualified for the match at a cost of £2.50 each. Watch this space.
