Dead leaves
Weather permitting, David “will chalk mark on road where the ‘bird’ can be seen on Sat morning 100yards past Cuckoo Gate“.

If only David had waited a little longer, there would have been lots of birds in the trees:
So my dismissal of ‘dead leaves’ was right?!? I hope they are not of the variety ‘Chalara fraxinea’!
That leaves me wondering what this other ‘splotch’ towards the right of the picture is – certainly not a Toucan …..
No answers please, as I don’t know the answer.
For those like me who need to look up chalara fraxinea, it is the fungus causing ash dieback. See

Saskia, I thought your ‘splotch’ was the mystery bird that was being referred to. Perhaps there was a bird after all and David missed it because he was too busy focusing on tne ‘dead leaf’ bird!
Phew, it’s good to know that I wasn’t the only one who was ‘seeing things’ elsewhere in the photo! We’ll never know whether it was simply some more ‘dead leaves’ or the elusive and extremely rare Monsdale bird.
