Taking to Tiddliwinks?

PARWICH CROWN GREEN BOWLS CLUB

Last week’s glorious weather was followed by the heavens opening on Thursday and the match having to be abandoned. Having played bowls for more years than I care to remember this is the first time a match has been called off.

Matlock Tuesday League.
Home – Whitworth Park – 23 August – 6.00pm.

Early starts now, it is quite amazing how quickly the nights are drawing in and we haven’t even got passed August yet. Whitworth were a fair way ahead of us in the league, 19 points to be exact so we needed to try our best. We managed to win three of the four games and came a close second in the other. Dot H propping up John B again won 21 – 9. Dawn A and Tony a won 21 – 12 with the ever reliable Edith and Rick chipping in with a 21 – 16 win. Adding the 15 points we got in the fourth game gave us a win 78 – 58. Now you maths buffs will have already clocked that we won by 20 points and thus have overtaken our opponents in the league! Only two more matches left in this league now.

  • Next match – Away – Chatsworth – 30 August – 6.00pm.

Matlock Thursday League.
Away – Bradwell – 25 August – 1.45.

So for the first time that I can recall the match had to be called off. It sheeted down! Unlike the cricket we unfortunately do not have recourse to the Duckworth- Lewis method to decide who has won the match so we will have another go next Wednesday. Perhaps in such circumstances we could automatically award the match to the away team on the basis that they had to travel. Alternatively we could have a game of tiddlywinks. Thinking about it we might do a bit better at that.

  • Next match – Away – Bradwell – 31 August – 1.45 pm – Wednesday.
  • Next match – Home – Bakewell – 1 September – 1.45pm

Drone Flying Overhead

PARWICH CROWN GREEN BOWLS CLUB

After last week’s heroics by the members in the Greenaway it was back to business as usual. Of course we did have the excitement of the drone. I can’t get over how small the pilots are these days. Everybody survived and the weather was glorious.

Matlock Tuesday League.
Away – Matlock Golf Club – 16 August – 6.30pm.

We always struggle against the Golf Club and this match was no different. We had played out a draw on our green so we wanted to try to get the extra point, as it was we needed more carrots as the match ended in the dark. Fortunately the Golf Club being the rich people they are have got flood lights. Anyway we shared the games two each with one of the Golf Club players, playing out of her skin. Well done Marian. As it was Harry B and John B had one of their better outings winning 21 – 7. Dawn A and Tony A playing with miners helmets on won 21 – 18. Close as the other games were the final score was a win for the Golf Club 67 – 65. Hopefully we won’t slip down a place.

  • Next match – Home – Whitworth Park – 23 August – 6.30pm.

Matlock Thursday League.
Home – Youlgrave – 18 August – 1.45.

Despite still not managing to get a camel buried under the green and the organisation of an intimidating drone flying overhead we only just beat Youlgrave. The doubles games ended one point ahead for Youlgrave with Sue A and Clara E losing by one point. Youlgrave 52, Parwich 51.

Thankfully our inimitable singles players won all but one of the six games. Tony A winning 15 -8. The remaining games were very tight, Dot H just getting home 15 – 14 after a great fight back. Parwich 132, Youlgrave 124. Our average score in this league is 130 points per match so we were right on target. We are still in second place in the league and unless we can start losing well we are going to get promoted.

  • Next match – Away – Bradwell – 25 August – 1.45 pm

Good matches last Sunday with Edith and Tony lifting their respective crowns as champions. This Sunday the Nadin Cup starts at 2.00pm. Why not come along.

Still think we should offer to play in the Olympics.

‘They’re Awesome’

PARWICH CROWN GREEN BOWLS CLUB

A bit of a different week for us this week with only one league match taking place and the Greenaway charity competition, however, you really must come down to Parsons Croft to see the players that we have in our great club. To use my grand children’s phrase ‘they are awesome!’

Matlock Tuesday League.
Home – Matlock Bath – 9 August – 6.30pm.

Having stuttered a bit in this league we managed to put some really good bowls together against Matlock. Of the four games we won three comfortably with Pat B and Tony A leading the way 21 – 5. Even John B wonderfully partnered by Dot H won 21 – 12 (truth be told it was Dot who did the damage for us!). This score was matched by Harry B and Sue A. Wonder of wonders the only pair to lose was Rick M and Edith. Well they do occasionally have to lose so that the opposition don’t cry every week. Mind you they only just lost 18 – 21. The final result was Parwich 81, Matlock 50. Having slipped in the league, this may bring us up a place, possibly two. In view of who we play next week it’s just as well we had a good win. We will need it.

  • Next match – Away – Matlock Golf Club – 16 August – 6.30pm.

Greenaway Charity Competition – Wirksworth – 11 August.

Now you must bear in mind that this is open to all players in the Thursday League. 5 people from Parwich entered the competition which is a doubles game. Everybody plays one game and the winners go to the main draw, with the losers going into the ‘consolation’ draw. Now again bearing in mind we only had 5 players, Ian J partnered by Alan B from Wirksworth got to the semi final of the ‘consolation’ draw to be narrowly beaten. Similarly Edith, playing in her first Greenaway was also narrowly beaten in the semi final. However, Dawn A also playing her first Greenaway, partnered by Phil M from Hazelwood in the main draw just lost in the final! I tell you if Crown Green bowls was in the Olympics Parwich could represent Team GB. I might even put the idea to the I O C! The main winner of course was the Greenaway Charity with over £1000 going to the workshop in Darley Dale.

Back to normal next week and we are still looking for a spare camel as we are entertaining Youlgrave.

  • Next league match – Home – Youlgrave – 18 August – 1.45 pm

Sunday is a men’s and ladies’ club competition so why not come down and see potential Olympic athletes play. (You are allowed to dream.)

Taking a Rest from Success

PARWICH CROWN GREEN BOWLS CLUB

Phew- we managed to lose twice this week. One loss we could have done without in the Tuesday League, but the loss in the Thursday League will hopefully not have too detrimental effect on our push for higher things in the Crown Green bowling world.

Matlock Tuesday League.
Away –Wirksworth – 2 August – 6.30pm.

We managed to beat Wirksworth at Parsons Croft quite easily, but on their very large green it was a different story. The games were shared two each with Rick and Edith leading the way as usual by winning 21 -10. Tony A and Dawn A came back from a losing position to win by 21 – 19. Unfortunately our other pairs did not fare with Clara E and John B going down 21 – 14. Similarly Harry B and Dot H also lost 21 – 10. The final score was Wirksworth 71, Parwich 66. Not a bad score really, we had slipped to seventh place in the league so there is a chance that these points will keep us there. Only five matches left in this league, where did the summer go. What summer I hear you cry.

  • Next match – Home – Matlock Bath – 9 August – 6.30pm.

Matlock Thursday League
Away – Hathersage – 4 August – 1.45pm.

Until a few games ago Hathersage were hard on our heels in third place in this league, they had slipped to fourth. They had also beaten us at Parsons Croft earlier in the season. We did not do too badly in the doubles really and although we only won one of the three games by Ian J and Dennis E, we were confident. Hathersage 56, Parwich 41. Now a very rare thing happened in the singles because although we won four out of the six games we lost 71 – 70. The stars of the singles were Rick M and Pat B each winning 15 – 8. Final score Hathersage 127, Parwich 111. Not a complete write off. Only four league matches to go in this league so keep your fingers crossed that we manage to hang on to second place.

  • Next league match – Home – Youlgrave – 18 August – 1.45 pm

Next week on Thursday we have 5 players taking part in the annual Greenaway charity match. This really is a good day and of course the best part is not only do you enjoy yourself, but the Greenaway Workshop in Darley Dale will benefit too.

Onward and Upward

PARWICH CROWN GREEN BOWLS CLUB

Again we had two really good wins this week even though we didn’t manage to get a camel under the green for Youlgraves visit. Good turn out as well in the Square Robin club competition with Tony A and Dawn A taking the honours. If you don’t know what a square robin looks like you will have to wait until next year.

Matlock Tuesday League.
Home –Youlgrave – 26 July – 6.30pm.

Having been comprehensively beaten at Youlgrave earlier in the season, and following on from last weeks dismal result we had to try and get back a little confidence. Thankfully we did. Rick and Edith showing the way winning 21 – 10. Dawn A and Dot H also doing a grand job to win 21 – 13. The husband and wife pair Tony and Sue A showed that marital harmony works well on the bowls green winning 21 – 14. We won’t mention Harry B and John B losing superbly well 21 – 11. What a Pair! You will have worked out that we won 74 – 58. At least this result made up a little for the loss at Youlgrave. We had slipped to seventh in the league so this win should stop us from dropping any lower.

  • Next match – Away – Wirksworth – 2 August – 6.30pm.

Matlock Thursday League
Home – Matlock Park – 28 July – 1.45pm.

We keep doing it, winning that is and the doubles pairs seem to be getting the hang of it as well, two good wins and a close loss. John H and Clara E winning 21 – 10 and Ian J and Liz H coming home 21 – 11. After the doubles we were in the lead 58 – 42. Can’t be bad.

Having played a blinder on Tuesday Tony and Sue A did it again today each winning 15 – 6. Dawn A and Edith R also won comprehensively, but the best result was Rick M winning 15 – 0. This gave us a singles score of 82 – 39. The overall score was Parwich 140, Matlock Park 81. This I am sure will cement our second place in the league. Onward and upward as they say.

  • Next match – Away – Hathersage – 4 August – 1.45 pm

PARWICH CROWN GREEN BOWLS CLUB

Apologies to our army of supporters who were expecting us to play Youlgrave this week, but yours truly jumped a week on the fixture list. However, those eagle eyed Blog peeps spotted my deliberate error and corrected it. Clever people aren’t they?

Matlock Tuesday League.
Away -19 July – 6.30pm – Bradwell.

Of late we cannot have any complaints about the weather; it has been glorious, shame about the bowls in the Tuesday League though. We were well and truly beaten by Bradwell. At the time of writing Bradwell were well and truly bottom of the league though the way they despatched us you would have thought the opposite. We only managed to win one game and thank goodness for that with Harry B and Rick M scoring 21 – 9. It would have been a major loss, but for those 21 points. John B and Clara E scrambled to 12, with Pat B and Sue A getting a further 11. In the final game we could only muster 8. The totals were Bradwell 72, Parwich 52. Still as I said the weather was glorious! We definitely play Youlgrave next week so we are still looking for a camel to stick under the green.

  • Next match – Home – Youlgrave – 26 July – 6.30pm.

Matlock Thursday League
Home – Wirksworth – 21 July – 1.45pm.

Having come a deserved cropper on Tuesday night we needed to ‘up our game’ as they say for this match. Again great weather and even better bowls. Rick M and Harry B carrying on where they left off on Tuesday won 21 – 1. What a start. Although our other pairs could not match this result they did play really well. Liz H and Sue A coming back from 9 -1 down to get us 16 valuable points. Ian J and Clara E did have a bit of an off day but still got 11. The score after doubles was 48 – 43 Parwich in the lead.

In the singles John H and Tony A led the way with 15 – 6 and 15 – 2 wins respectively. The remainder of our singles players managed to restrict their opponents to single figures, although we did lose one game. The total score in the singles was Parwich 82, Wirksworth 43. Final score 130 – 86 to Parwich. Still riding high in second place in the league.

  • Next match – Home – Matlock Park – 1.45 pm

Another good club event on Sunday, the square robin. Come and see what one looks like down at Parsons Croft at around 10.30 am.

PARWICH CROWN GREEN BOWLS CLUB

Well you see we had two cracking wins this week. The team we played in the Tuesday League are ten points ahead of us and in the Thursday League opponents are a little behind us.

Matlock Tuesday League.
Home -12 July – 6.30pm – Whitworth Park.

We shared the games this week and all four were very keenly contested. Dennis and Clara E got back to winning ways by 21 -17. Ever dependable Edith and Rick stormed home 21 – 11 which in fact was the deciding factor in the overall result. Although Dawn A and John B tried hard they were well beaten by the Whitworth pair 19 – 21 and the same applied to Pat B and Harry B, just beaten 18 -21. The final result was Parwich 79, Whitworth 70. As you maths geniuses will note we won by 9 points so we are now one point behind Whitworth.

Next week we entertain Youlgrave they of elephant under the green fame. Has anybody got a camel lurking about somewhere that we could bury under our green before next week?

  • Next match – Away – Bradwell B – 19 July – 6.30pm.

Matlock Thursday League
Home – Bradwell – 14 July – 1.45pm.

The Thursday League Juggernaut rolls on! Really good wins in the doubles with two wins and a close second. Liz H and Sue A coming home 21 -14 and Dawn A and Ian J also winning 21 -19. With the close loss we were 61 – 54 ahead.

Five wins out of six in the singles with John H and Dawn A both winning 15 – 9. The singles score finished up Parwich 83, Bradwell 67. The combined score was Parwich 144, Bradwell 121. Bearing in mind the maximum score you can achieve is 154, we were only 10 below this.

  • Next match – Away – Wirksworth A – 21 July – 1.45pm

We have a club competition on Sunday, open doubles, but I’m sure a piece of cake could be in the offing.

Something of a curate’s egg

PARWICH CROWN GREEN BOWLS CLUB

At least we managed to lose one game this week, but it wasn’t a very good loss. In the other league we won. Perhaps next year we should have had a go in the hill race instead.

Matlock Tuesday League.
Home -5 July – 6.30pm – Cote Heath.

Cote Heath got relegated from the top division last year and have been winning for fun this year. They have some really very good players, but then so do we. The match was shared two games each with the ever reliable Edith and Rick winning 21 – 7. Tony and Sue A also played their little socks off to win 21 – 17. Although our other two pairs lost because we managed to accumulate more points than they did a win was possibly on the cards, and as you know dear reader points mean prizes in crown green bowls. The final score was Parwich 67, Cote Heath 66. Only one point in it, but a win is a win. Following last week’s win we had moved up a place in the division, but I think that this win may well not be sufficient to keep us there.

  • Next match – Home – Whitworth Park – 5 July – 6.30pm.

Matlock Thursday League
Away – Chatsworth – 7 July – 1.45pm.

Few we lost! But only just. There were two very close games in the doubles this week with Harry and Audrey B just losing 21 – 20 and Ian J and Clara E losing 21 – 19. After the doubles the score was Chatsworth 63, Parwich 49.

The singles were split three games each with a rare event taking place with Dawn, Edith, and Rick all losing. Fortunately the losses were not that great and the singles score was Parwich 71, Chatsworth 60. Now those of you with a calculator will have worked out that we therefore lost the match 123 – 120. We were in second place in the league; however this loss may drop us down a place or possibly two, which would be useful.

  • Next match – Home – Bradwell – 14 July – 1.45pm.

See you down at Parsons Croft on Saturday and perhaps Sunday too when we entertain Hazelwood for a friendly.

PARWICH CROWN GREEN BOWLS CLUB

Oh dear we are still winning with a vengeance and in both the Leagues this week. As you dear reader, know it can sometimes be a little inclement on the Bowls green and our Tuesday match was inclement in the extreme.

Matlock Tuesday League.
Away -28 June – 6.30pm – Bakewell.

You really do need to get down to Parsons Croft and see how good your tiny village bowls team is. They are awesome. Bakewell are third in the division by a long way and we are struggling just below half way, however even though it looked as though it was the potential start of the great flood and we would need to contact Noah the Team won.

We came off the green looking like drowned rats, but with big smiles on our faces. Rick and Edith stormed home 21 – 7. Dawn A and John B won 21 – 17 with Pat B and Dennis E also winning 21 – 19. Even though Clara E and Harry B lost they were playing their best pair and still got 12. The final score was Bakewell 64, Parwich 75.

Next week we play the top of the league. I think we will need more than Noah.

  • Next match – Home – Cote Heath – 5 July – 6.30pm.

Matlock Thursday League
Home – Whitworth Park – 30 June – 1.45pm.

It’s getting critical now that we are past half way in the season because we had another cracking win!

We only won one of the three doubles, but we were only 5 points down. With a good 21 – 14 win and with close losses to 15 -21 in the other two games, we were in touch.

You may well recall we do quite well in the singles and this week was no exception with Dawn A winning 15 – 1, Tony A 15 – 4 Harry B 15 – 6, Rick M 15 – 6 and Edith R 15 – 7. Although we lost one game it was only 14 – 15! Singles scores Parwich 89, Whitworth 39, giving an overall win 140 – 95. This will cement our second position in the league.

  • Next match – Away – Chatsworth. – 7 July – 1.45pm.

Have a good time at Wakes. The Bowls Club would love to take part in the Hill Race, but as you can see we have to uphold the Village on the bowls green on Tuesday!

PARWICH CROWN GREEN BOWLS CLUB

Can you believe the bowls season is already half way through and we don’t seem to have had too much summer yet, or is it me? Perhaps the summer will surprise us and come with a flourish soon. As for the bowls we appear to be rocketing along in one league and struggling in the other.

Matlock Tuesday League.
Away -21 June – 6.30pm – Ashwwod Park.

As mentioned last week Ashwood are a good second in the league and they certainly played like it. There was also a loss for our dynamic duo Dennis and Clara E who lost for the first time in ages. You can tell how good Ashwood are because even Rick and Edith lost albeit by the small margin of 21 – 19. We could only muster one win this week with Dawn A and Dot H convincingly winning 21 – 17. Unfortunately these were the only two bright aspects of this week’s attempts by you bowls club. The final result was Ashwood 80, Parwich 57.

Although we are not playing our best in this league we are still none the less only just below half way in the division. If we could string a few good results together we may climb a few places. We play Bakewell away next week, not the best place to go to try and start a bit of a results run.

  • Next match – Away – Bakewell – 28 June – 6.30pm.

Matlock Thursday League
Away – Baslow – 23 June – 1.45pm.

We really will have to take care in this League as we are flying along. As of last week we had climbed up into second place in the division. I think money may well have to change hands in order for us to drop a few places and avoid promotion. Having said that we did not perform well in the doubles this week and only managed one win, but what a win it was for Audrey B and Dot H, 21 -3. After the doubles we trailed 40 points to 45.

In the singles we came through with flying colours winning 5 out of the 6 games, with Dawn A, Edith, and John H all scoring handsomely. Parwich 79, Baslow 60. The overall result therefore Baslow 105, Parwich 119. We will have to start losing!

  • Next match – Home – Whitworth Park. – 30 June – 1.45pm.

Enjoy open gardens and well done to those of you who have strived to get them looking great.

PARWICH CROWN GREEN BOWLS CLUB

The season is certainly going well. Better not speak too soon, however. Dennis and Clara E are rapidly becoming our star pair and the pair to be beaten by our opponents. So far they have won six games on the bounce. Bet I’ve given them the kiss of death now. Two really good wins though this week.

Matlock Tuesday League.
Howe -14 June – 6.30pm – Chatsworth.

Matching our best win of the season we won all four games. Dawn A was very magnanimous and allowed John B to play again. Just in case, she played with him so that she could sort him out if he went off the boil again. It worked because they won 21 – 7. This score was more than matched by Pat B and Harry B. Dennis and Clara E did a great job in coming home winners 21 – 19, again matched by Edith and Rick 21 – 19. This gave us the full house score of 84 to Chatsworth’s 52. Unfortunately we have a very eagle eyed League Secretary who picks up on every little detail and noticed we had put the wrong date on the score sheet! Both teams got a 10 point deduction! Talk about here’s a hair let’s split it. Next week we are away to one of the top sides in the league. Keep your fingers crossed.

  • Next match – Away – Ashwood Park – 21 June – 6.30pm.

Matlock Thursday League
Home – Matlock Bath – 16 June – 1.45pm.

For the second time this year, and although we are still short of players because of holidays, we won all 3 doubles games. Dennis and Clara E did their stuff again winning 21 – 19. John and Liz H followed on from their success against the league leader’s last week and came home 21 – 10. Last, but by no means least Audrey B and Rick M won 21 – 18. Parwich 63, Matlock 47. The singles for once was extremely close even though we won 4 out of the 6 games. John H doubling up because of shortage of players won 15 – 9, with Rick M having to do the same winning 15 -11, matched by Edith. Dawn A as usual put in a good result for us winning 15 – 10. Parwich 72, Matlock 71. Phew! Final score Parwich 135 Matlock 118. We had managed to climb up to third in the League so this result should hopefully keep us there.

  • Next match – Away – Baslow. – 23 June – 1.45pm.

Beating Bakewell at Bowls

PARWICH CROWN GREEN BOWLS CLUB

Sometimes there is greatness and sometimes greatness is thrust upon us, with Dennis and Clara E being thrust upon the most lately. Although we only won one match it was certainly the one to win.

Matlock Tuesday League.
Away -7 June – 6.30pm – Whitworth Park.

The games were shared two each, but of course you know points win matches and we gained fewer than our opponents. Clara E and Pat B battled away and won 21 – 17. Rick and Edith also had a good win 21 – 16. Our esteemed Captain Dawn A partnered by Dot H also played really well only to lose 21 – 17. In the final game against Whitworth’s best pair we could only manage 6 points. The final score was Whitworth 75, Parwich 65. It could be that we will drop down a little in the league. Just as a reminder John B was dropped from a great height following last week’s defeat. Whether he will ever appear in Parwich colours again is debateable.

  • Next match – Home – Chatsworth – 14 June – 6.30pm.

Matlock Thursday League
Away – Bakewell – 9 June – 1.45pm.

Talk about thrusting greatness you really do need to see Dennis and Clara E play bowls lately. (David Bryant eat your heart out – He was a very famous bowls player). As avid readers of this twaddle know Bakewell are top of the League and have not been beaten on their green this year. However Parwichians to the fore. John and Liz H only just back from the Costa Packet came back from what looked like certain defeat to win 21 – 20. Then of course we have Dennis and Clara E who stormed to a fabulous win 21 – 12. Although our final pair lost, Audrey B and Ian J kept pegging away. However we were in the lead 55 – 53.

Singles up next and we won four out of the six games with Dawn A having a stonking win 15 – 4. Parwich 84, Bakewell 67. So there it was a great if a little unexpected win 139 – 120. We were a fairly comfortable third in the League and this win should keep us there. Bakewell, although losing, were so far in the lead in the League that this defeat will not affect their place.

  • Next match – Home – Matlock Bath – 16 June – 1.45pm.

Hope you are going to come down to Parsons Croft on Saturday to help the celebrations for HRH. You can have crack on the Green. We are also having a club knockout Mixed Doubles game on Sunday at 2.00pm, so again meander down to the Green watch the best do their stuff and have a cup of tea.

Parwich’s Fabulous Bowlers

PARWICH CROWN GREEN BOWLS CLUB

One and a half wins this week and Dawn A won the open singles last Sunday with Rick M coming a close second. Congratulations Dawn.

Matlock Tuesday League.
Home -31 May – 6.30pm – Matlock Golf Club.

You know how there are bogey teams in football well we have the same trouble playing the Golf Club. Perhaps we should challenge them to a round of golf, we may achieve a better result, as it was we did not win, but we didn’t lose either. We managed to contrive a draw with both teams winning two games each. Dawn A and Clara E winning in style 21 – 7. Edith and Dennis E also doing well winning 21 – 11. The least said about John B and Dot H the better. Suffice it to say John B is dropped next week and will be lucky if we see him on the green again this year. The final score was 60 points each. This kept us mid table.

  • Next match – Away – Whitworth Park – 7 June – 6.30pm.

Matlock Thursday League
Home – Bradwell B. – 2 June – 1.45pm.

Bradwell are just ahead of us in the League and as you know, dear reader, we have a number of players on holiday. However, this did not deter your fabulous village bowls team. (You watch we will fall down with a vengeance next week!).

Anyway carrying on this week’s match we had to have people ‘doubling up’ i.e. playing in the doubles and the singles as we only had 10 players. However for the first time in living memory we won all three doubles games, with the dynamic Dennis and Clara E winning 21 – 8. Not to be out done Rick M and Ian J matched their score. Edith R and Audrey B although only winning by one point managed the hat trick of wins for us. Parwich 63, Bradwell 36.

Could our singles team do an equally good job, well sort of? The result was three games each, but when you have got Rick M and Dawn A doing their stuff the opposition capitulated and we won by 74 points to 62. The overall result was Parwich 137, Bradwell 98. This will mean that we will climb above Bradwell in the League.

Next week we play the top team so the banana skin is already in place.

  • Next match – Away – Bakewell – 9 June – 1.45pm.

Humps, Hollows and Elephants

PARWICH CROWN GREEN BOWLS CLUB

Playing on the two most difficult greens in the Leagues we had one fabulous win and a near miss and our ‘star’ played her second game even better than the first. If you do not believe these extremely accurate and unbiased reports then you are living in the wrong Village!

Matlock Tuesday League.
Away -24 May – 6.30pm – Matlock Bath.

The green at Matlock is very small and you have to know where the humps and hollows are. This as you may realise dear reader is not always possible for the ‘away team’. The games were shared 2 each, but again as you know it’s ‘points that win prizes’ John B and Rick M lead the way for us with a 21 – 13 win. Pat B and Harry B also had a good win 21 – 18. Our remaining pairs, although putting up a really good show, lost. The final result was a close loss Matlock 73, Parwich 66. Our position in the League was just below half way and this result I fear will not improve our position. Tough game again next week, keep your fingers crossed.

  • Next match – Home – Matlock Golf Club – 31 May – 6.30pm.

Matlock Thursday League
Away – Youlgrave – 26 May – 1.45pm.

Now you know about the elephant buried under Youlgrave’s green and not only do you have to be on top of your game, but you also need David Attenborough to get you over the wild life. However when you have a Lynn and an Edith you must stand a bit of a chance. Playing with Pat B, Lynn C, although losing, got 13 extremely valuable points. Dennis and Clara E again, although losing got 19 great points. Our third couple Audrey B and Ian J were being put to the sward. At one point they were 13 nil down, but fought back to a narrow loss 21 – 15. What a pair. At the end of the doubles though we were 16 points down. However, you can’t keep our singles players down even on the trickiest green in the League. Dot H was inspired winning 15 – 6 and John B and Edith winning to 8 and 9 respectively. Out of the 90 points available we got 88! I am in awe of the members! The final score was Parwich 135, Youlgrave 123. We had slipped to fourth in the League so this winning score should at least keep us there.

  • Next match – Home – Bradwell – 2 June – 1.45pm.

This bank holiday Sunday we are playing our Open Singles competition. Start Time 2.00pm. Why not come along and see what you are missing. A piece of cake and a cup of tea may well be in the offing.

A star is born

PARWICH CROWN GREEN BOWLS CLUB

Our opponents were very good teams this week and we managed one win and a very close second in the other match. Can you believe we are already a third if the way through the season.

Matlock Tuesday League.
Home -17 May – 6.30pm – Wirksworth.

Wirksworth were third in the League and are as you would expect a very keen team. Of the four games, we won three with Tony A and John B winning 21 – 2. Edith and Rick also had a great win 21 – 7. Dennis and Clara E battled away and finally came home winners 21 – 15. Although Sue A and Dot H lost it did not have too much effect on the score and Parwich won 70 – 45. Our mid table position may well improve this week. Tricky match next week at Matlock Bath on their 50 pence piece green.

  • Next match – Away – Matlock Bath – 24 May – 6.30pm.

Matlock Thursday League
Home – Hathersage – 19 May – 1.45pm.

As I mentioned last week Hathersage were top of the league and we needed to be on top of our game to have any chance. A mention has also to be made of our latest player. Because ‘a star is born’. Can you believe Lynn C having played hardly any bowls at all played like a veteran? Partnered with Edith R, although they lost 21 – 13 they were playing against Hathersages best pair, what a result. Watch out everybody, Lynn C has arrived. She will be jumping out of hot air balloon baskets next. Our remaining pairs did not win, but Rick M and Clara E only just lost 21 – 18. After the doubles we were 21 points behind. The singles players put up a great come back and although only three were wins the other players came close. The final outcome was Parwich 123 Hathersage 126. Not bad for possibly the smallest Club in the League. Next week the elephants are on parade again, we are away to Youlgrave!!

  • Next match – Away – Youlgrave – 26 May – 1.45pm.

The holiday season is upon us and we are critically short of players. We are 5 members short and bearing in mind we only have 14 registered players and we need 12 players for the Thursday League you do not have to be a mathematical genius to work out we are short. Anybody care to join Lynn C next week??

Snared by the Elephant

PARWICH CROWN GREEN BOWLS CLUB

We have enjoyed some good matches so far this season and apart from the occasional blip we have done well. Unfortunately we are going to struggle for the next few weeks. This is because at least 5 members of the Club are going away on holiday and because of our small numbers the remaining players will have to play their socks off.

Matlock Tuesday League.
Away -10 May – 6.30pm – Youlgrave.

It was stair-rodding it down on Tuesday night and unfortunately we did not have a good night. In addition as you loyal readers will know Youlgrave buried an elephant, or it could have been a camel, under their green a few years ago and this makes for very interesting Jack and bowls lines. You can send a wood and by the time it has finished rolling it can almost come back on itself. Really frustrating at times, but good fun if you know what you are doing. As you may gather we don’t. Only one pair won, Harry B and John B winning 21-9. Rick and Edith were winning 19 -12, but their opponents pegged them back and finished up winning 21 – 19. Our remaining pairs lost quite well. The final score was Youlgrave 82, Parwich 53. Next week back in Parwich, but our opponents will be difficult to beat.

  • Next match – Home – Wirksworth – 17 May – 6.30pm.

Matlock Thursday League
Away – Matlock Park – 12 May.

The afternoon was beautiful and extremely hot and so was our bowls. Although we lost all of the doubles games we were only a few points down. The maximum points you can win in the 6 singles games is 90 and we won all six. Rick M winning by 15 – 1. Tony A  won 15 – 5 with John B also having a good win 15 -6. The final score was Matlock 105, Parwich 137. It’s a good job we have done well in these early matches as we will have a problem over the next few weeks and particularly next week as we play the team top of the League.

  • Next match – Home – Hathersage – 19 May – 1.45pm.

Sunshine on the Green

PARWICH CROWN GREEN BOWLS CLUB

Having suffered the ravages of the British climate last week this week could not have been more of a contrast, as indeed was the bowls we played, two really good wins.

Matlock Tuesday League.
Home -3 May – 6.30pm – Bradwell.

Fabulous evening on all counts, best of all was the result. We managed a full house with Dennis E and John B winning in great style 21 – 4. Dawn A and Tony A had a similarly good win 21 – 11. Rick M and Edith put together their usual excellent score winning 21 – 12. Finally Pat B and Sue A come home to give us our first maximum score. They won 21 – 13 with the grand total 84 – 40.

  • Next match – Away – Youlgrave – 10 May – 6.30pm.

Matlock Thursday League
Home – Wirksworth – 5 May.

What a gorgeous afternoon, we are in the middle of July aren’t we? We even had a visit from Lucy D. She sent a few practice woods down. She also let slip that she is doing a sports degree at Sheffield Uni. See you in a couple of years time Lucy. Fortunately we didn’t need Lucy this afternoon. The doubles pairs won two of the three games, but we still behind 46 – 58. In the singles 5 out of 6 can’t be bad with Rick M, Edith R, and Harry B being the best of us. This gave us 81 – 50 with an overall core of 127 to Parwich 108 to Wirksworth.

  • Next match – Away – Matlock Park – 12 May – 1.45pm.

Although the ‘Event Diary’ on the blog shows us having a friendly against Hazelwood at Parsons Croft this Sunday the venue has been swapped and we are playing at Hazelwood. [Editor’s note- the Blog Diary has now been updated.] Come and watch if you fancy a ride out.

All Weather Bowling

PARWICH CROWN GREEN BOWLS CLUB

We are having mixed fortunes on the green of late, a bit like the curates egg really (if we had a curate or indeed an egg). One good win away from home, one not so good loss, also away from home.

Matlock Tuesday League.
AWAY -26 April – 6.30pm – Whitworth Park.

Although I wasn’t there I am reliably informed that not even brass monkeys would have dared to show their faces, or any other part of their anatomy for that matter. Hail stones as big footballs could not put our redoubtable team off. By the time a wood had gone a couple of yards it had grown to a size big enough to make a snow man. Although we only won one of the 4 games the score wasn’t that bad with Whitworth coming out on top 78 – 62.

  • Next match – Home – Bradwell – 3 May – 6.30pm.

Matlock Thursday League.
Away – Bradwell – 28 April.

Again the weather gods were against us (We know when to have a week’s holiday!). Evidently it was 4 degrees and throwing it down with rain. However, everybody kept going and though frost bite was a potential problem we overcame. We lost the 3 doubles games by 55 – 47 with Ian J and Liz H playing a great game to win 21 – 13.

The singles were shared 3 apiece with Tony A and Dawn A both winning 15 – 3. The final singles score of Parwich 77 to Bradwell’s 74 gave us an overall win 124 – 119. What a team!

  • Next match – Wirksworth – 5 May – 1.45pm.

Another ‘welcome all’ get together tomorrow (Sunday) 2.00pm. You can’t afford to miss the cakes again! Can’t believe we will already be in May.

The Cakes were Delicious

PARWICH CROWN GREEN BOWLS CLUB

So from the giddy heights of TV stardom it was back to the mundane grind of everyday bowls life. We also visited a new venue this week, but with little success. Perhaps we will be able to seek our revenge when we play on our green.

Matlock Tuesday League.
AWAY -19 April – 6.00pm – Cote Heath, Buxton.

I did not realise that Buxton had so many crown green bowls clubs. There are four to my knowledge. This was the first time for most of us to play at Cote Heath. When our Club started years ago we played in the top division of the league and Cote Heath has remained there all these years. Last year they got relegated down to our division, but seeing their results so far I don’t think they will be down for long. The evening although cold was beautiful. Shame our bowls did not match it. At least all four of our pairs managed to get to double figures and Dawn A and John B won our only game 21 – 18. Even our redoubtable pairing of Edith and Rick could only manage to get to 14. The first match of the season Cote Heath scored a maximum 84, but we showed ‘em and restricted them to a measly 81! Final result was 81 – 57 to our opponents.

  • Next match – Away – Whitworth Park – 26 April – 6.15pm.

Matlock Thursday League.
HOME – Chatsworth – 21 April.

There was a bit of a rarity in this match with Pat B and Ian J winning a doubles games and restricting their opponents to less than ten. They won 21 – 5 with Ian on fire. They were very ably supported by Sue A and Dennis E only losing by 21 – 17 and Audrey and Harry B also just losing by 21 – 16. This gave us an aggregate score of 54 – 47 after the doubles games. We carried on doing well in the singles winning 4 out of the 6 games with Edith R and Tony A being our best winners. The final score in the singles was Parwich 80, Chatsworth 67, giving us a grand win by 134 points to 114.

  • Next match – AWAY – Bradwell – 28 April – 1.45pm.

It was good to see a good number of people on the green for our ‘welcome social’ last Saturday. Although I wasn’t there I’m reliably informed the cakes were delicious – see what you missed!

Become a TV Star

PARWICH CROWN GREEN BOWLS CLUB

Second week of the season and the weather was a little kinder to us this week. We also had occasion for the team to appear on the television again putting the style gurus right on how to deliver a wood (well done John H, lovely action). In addition expounding words of wisdom regarding building in villages, well I think that’s what it was. So not only can you get exercise, but you can become a TV star as well.

Matlock Tuesday League.
HOME -12 April – 6.00pm-Bakewell.

I must confess that the weather on the night left a little to be desired, but the team kept battling the elements. Again just as a reminder the format for the match is 4 doubles played up to 21. The first two games were shared one each with Sue A and Harry B just missing out 21 – 16. The second game was well won by Dawn A and Tony A 21- 15. Couldn’t be tighter. The final two games were won by Parwich with the last game being played by Edith and Rick (remember them from last year) in virtual darkness. Good job the pair of them like carrots. The results were Pat and John B winning 21-15 and Edith and Rick 21-18, giving us an overall win by 79 – 69.

  • Next match: Away – Cote Heath – 19 April – 6.00pm.

Matlock Thursday League.
AWAY – 14 April – Whitworth Park.

Having started so well in the doubles games last week it was a shame we didn’t keep up the scores this week. We were well down on our opponents after the games, but I don’t think we had the rub of the green. The singles turned out to put us a little nearer though. We managed to win 5 out of the six games. Edith and Rick carrying on from Tuesday night winning each of their games 15 – 7. The final score, however, resulted in a small loss 124 – 115. It would be good if, when we lost, we could score such a good number of points.

At least the East Midlands Today interview was a cracker.

  • Next match: HOME – Whitworth Park – 14 April – 1.45pm.

So having started the new season we have arranged a bit of a get together on Saturday (16th). Nothing special, but just a chance to send a few woods over the green for bit of fun. Come down to Parsons Croft at around 2.00pm and enjoy yourself.

A Great Start to the Season

PARWICH CROWN GREEN BOWLS CLUB

The stalwarts of the green sward are back in action after their winter break. We even have a couple of new members who will be swinging their arm this year. Unfortunately the bowls training course does not appear to be in place yet. Not sure if we can get sufficient numbers for the organisers to come to Parwich. I will keep you informed. So with the first sighting of a swallow we have come out of hibernation as well with our first game this week.

Matlock Tuesday League.

  • HOME -First match 12 April – 6.00pm Bakewell.

Tough first match this come down to Parsons Croft and support us.

Matlock Thursday League.
Home – 7 April – Baslow.

Now as you aficionados of this very fast moving game will remember there are effectively two elements to the Thursday League matches, doubles and singles. So just as a reminder and to those who are not aware (where have you been for the past twenty years) doubles are three pairs played up to 21, and six singles played up to 15.

It was good to see Ian J back playing and now living back in Parwich. He played with Dennis E and although they did not win they came very close just losing out by four shots 21 – 17. A similar score was achieved by Liz H and Clara E. The icing on the cake, or should that be the hailstones on the green! Sue A and Pat B coming home winners by 21 – 10. This gave us a lead of 55 – 52. Considering the weather the games were played in a really good score.

How is it that people who are good at sport and particularly this game can search around for their woods which have been unceremoniously dumped at the back of the cupboard under the stairs at the end of last season and play as though no break occurred. We, thankfully, have a few who play for us who fall within this category of superstars! Edith, Rick, and Dawn whilst scoring 45 points only had 15 scored against them. John H and Harry B also scoring 30 points to 11 against them. The final singles we won’t go into, hard luck John B! The final score after the six singles was Parwich 82, Baslow 41. Can’t be bad.

Overall Parwich 137, Baslow 93. Didn’t we do well.

Next match

  • Away – Whitworth Park – 14 April – 1.45pm.

New Bowls Season starting soon

PARWICH CROWN GREEN BOWLING CLUB
2016 SEASON

So the time has come the walrus said to think of other things, and you can’t think of a much better thing than Crown Green Bowls. You can now forget all about what Rob is going to do in the Archers and get down to Parsons Croft.

As from this weekend starting Saturday 2 April you can enjoy the delights of the best game there is after tidily winks.

The first match of the season is at home against Baslow on Thursday 7 April. Start time 1.45 pm. As you may recall we were playing in the higher echelons of the Thursday League last year, but difficult a task as it was we managed to get ourselves relegated back to the lower division.

The first Tuesday match is also at home on 12 April. Start time I think is 6.00pm and our opponents are Bakewell.

One final note is that we have a couple of new members joining us this year which is great. Many more would be most welcome. See you at Parsons Croft.

Going Out in a Blaze of Glory

PARWICH CROWN GREEN BOWLS CLUB

So that’s it for another year. Don’t want to keep banging on but we really, really, really do need some new Club members next year. I can recall Ron Birch some years ago when I asked him when and where him and Ada were going on holiday he said it would have to wait until the end of the bowls season. This year now the final game has been played there is a mass exodus of Bowls Club Members going away on holiday! The problem is that if you play bowls for Parwich you cannot go on holiday or be ill and if you die you have to bring a certificate along to the Green to prove it.

Our final position for the Tuesday League was fourth. We were only 17 points from being second and gaining promotion to the higher division.

As you know the Thursday League was a bit beyond us this year, having been promoted, but what a final match we had. We won one of the three doubles, with our Captain John H putting together married couples in the games. Audrey and Harry B winning handsomely 21 – 9, Clara and Dennis E coming a close second in their game, and Liz and John H coming an even closer second. The scores meant that we were behind 51 – 43. You do have to watch some of our players to realise HOW GOOD THEY ARE. Pat B won 15 – 2, Edith won 15 -5, and Dawn won 15 – 6. The final singles score was Parwich 88 (out of 90), Matlock Park 55. This gave us a fabulous final result 131 – 106. Next year we will be in the lower division, but don’t bet on us not gaining promotion again.

Another year gone so I will set you fellas and ladies a challenge, come and see if you can get to double figures next year against some of the best players in the Matlock and District Leagues, You need to see how good some of our players are. If we are spared we will speak electronically to you next year.

By the way there are no parachute payments on relegation only hang gliding lessons!

Midges and Parachutes

PARWICH CROWN GREEN BOWLS CLUB

Last match of the season in one League and second last in the other. Considering the mistake of getting promoted last year it has been an enjoyable season, most of the time.

Matlock Tuesday bowls league.
Away – Ashwood Park – 1 September – 5.45pm.

As the nights draw in the start of the closing matches gets earlier and earlier and we had only just finished lunch before we had to play! The players at Ashwood Park are really a good lot, but they do need to train their midges, we got mauled to bits. Thankfully the bowls was not so much of a mauling. Both teams won two games each with Tony A and John B winning 21 – 12 and Edith and Rick also winning by the same margin. Our other two pairs did not fare so well and because Ashwood won the games by a greater margin than us the final score was Ashwood 66, Parwich 64. We had been tussling with Whitworth Park for third place in the league and this score unfortunately dropped us down to fourth place, the best position we have achieved for a long time.

Matlock Thursday Friendly League.
Away – Bakewell – 3 September – 1.45pm

As you followers of this fabulous sports reporting will know Bakewell’s green is a long and thin oblong with not much crown, but lots of small humps and hollows and their player know every blade of grass. Our doubles pairs did really well however, but still we trailed Bakewell by 58 to 46 with only Tony and Sue A giving us a good win.

The singles were shared three games each with Dawn winning 15 – 3 and Edith 15 – 8. Where would we be without them? The singles score finished 70 points each with the overall result a win for Bakewell 128 – 116. It’s not very clear if parachute payments are made for relegated teams like they have in the Premier Football League, I’ll make enquiries and let you know after our final match of the season next week.

Last match – Home – Matlock Park – 10 September – 1.45pm.

The Sharp End Approaches

PARWICH CROWN GREEN BOWLS CLUB

We are rapidly approaching the sharp end of the season in the Leagues that we play in. As you avid readers of this stuff will know the Thursday League has become the ‘Thursday after the day before League’, however we are still in with a shout of promotion from the Tuesday League. You also obviously missed the fabulous sports report for last week’s matches, but grandchildren do get in the way don’t they. However because of that you will have to put up with a double helping this week.

Matlock Tuesday bowls league.

Away – Hathersage – 18 August – 6.30pm.

Top of the league and away from home today, it was a case of damage limitation if we wanted to keep in touch with possible promotion. Dawn A and Tony A had a great win 21 – 18. Not to be outdone Rick and Edith also won 21 – 18. When results like this occur there is always a ‘but’ and it was that we lost the next two games by a considerable margin. The final score was Hathersage 78, Parwich 59. Even after this result we have still hung on to third place, but now we were very much in third. More than twenty points behind the second team instead of 6.

Home – Chatsworth – 25 August – 6.30pm

After last week we needed to try and get a really good score, and a good score we did get. We won three games out of 4 with the dynamic duo Dawn A and Dot H winning 21 – 2! Matching this score Rick and Edith won 21 – 6. Last but by no means least Harry B and John B won 21 – 17. The final score was Parwich 76 – 46. This score could close the gap which opened up after last week. Only one more match to go in this League. Watch this space for next week’s nail biting finally!

Next match- Away – Ashwood Park – 1 September – 6.00pm.

Matlock Thursday Friendly League.

Home – Wirksworth – 20 August – 1.45pm

It was good to see that our doubles pairs won this week even if it was by only two points, but what a win by Sue A and Harry B 21 – 4. The singles matches were equally tight with both teams scoring 71 points each. Tony A leading the way winning 15 – 5 and Edith 15 – 9. The final score was a win to Parwich 119 – 117.

Away – Hope Works – 27 August – 1. 45pm

Top of the League and they really made their superiority count. It would not be fitting to dwell too much on the score as the death throes of our venture into the top division come to a dispiriting end. Suffice it to say we lost with dignity! Next year we will be in the lower division and our sojourn into higher echelons is over, for now. Only two more games to go.

Next match – Away – Bakewell – 3 September – 1.45pm.

Well Played Parwich!

PARWICH CROWN GREEN BOWLS CLUB

Only one league match this week, but the Robins were twittering, the Greenaway exciting and the league match well find out more below dear reader.

Matlock Tuesday bowls league
Home – Matlock Golf Club – 11 August – 6.30pm.

Having played the Golf Club in the Thursday League last week and been soundly beaten it was imperative that we tried to reverse the result in this League. Obviously the format is very different, as indeed are the players, however to keep pressure on the top two teams, good play was required. The team did not disappoint, Dennis and Clara E will have to be known as the ‘comeback kids’. Last week they were losing really well and then won 18 straight points. This week they were 14 – 3 down and only lost 21 – 19. They just won’t give in. This was the only game we lost. Dawn and Dot played a blinder and won 21 – 8, and Rick and Edith won 21 – 11. Pat and John B also won 21 – 18. When all was added up we won 82 – 58. Bearing in mind the maximum you can score is 84, this was our best result for some time. We were 25 points behind the second team in the Division so dependent on results we might close the gap a bit. Cross everything next week as we are playing the top of the league and on their patch.

  • Next match- Away – Hathersage – 18 August – 6.15pm.

Matlock Thursday Friendly League

No league match this week, but a great replacement the Greenaway Charity Competition. The Greenaway centre in Darley Dale does marvellous work for people less able than us. If you need that old chair re-caned or some printing done then that’s the place to go. In the past Parwich players have done well in the competition with the likes of Ron Birch and John B winning. This year we came close again. John B was knocked out in the second round. Tony A got to the quarter final, but Rick M (he who plays with Edith) got all the way to the final playing with Phil Meacham from the Hazelwood club. They were eventually beaten, but at least little Parwich was nearly there again. Next year perhaps? The main winner as always was the Greenaway Centre who will benefit from over £1000 raised on the day. Now that is a result.

  • Next match – Home – Wirksworth – 20 August – 1.45pm.

Last Sunday the Robins were rocking again, particularly in the guise if Rick M. You can’t keep a good man down. Rick won the main competition for the second year running with Tony A winning the Plate side. Well done the pair of you. More Robins of some description next year no doubt.

One Up, One Down and Several Robins

PARWICH CROWN GREEN BOWLS CLUB

Following last week’s really good wins we needed to try and keep the momentum going this week. We partially succeeded, read on for this week’s thrilling instalment of Parwich Crown Green Bowls Club ‘their quest for success’.

Matlock Tuesday bowls league.
Away – Bakewell – 4 August – 6.30pm.

Having played last week the win took us up to third in the division, albeit by just one point. Bakewell’s green is long and thin with hardly any crown at all and as a team we struggle, but we did OK this time. Dawn and John B won their game 21 – 7, with Tony A and Harry B also having a good win 21 – 15. The Edith and Rick combo for once had a fight on their hands just sneaking home by 21 – 20. Dot H and Pat B were playing Bakewells best pair and they put up an equally good fight before coming second by 13 – 21. The overall result was Bakewell 63, Parwich 76. Dependent upon other team results we will stay third and may well reduce the gap to the team who are second. We will have to watch it though otherwise we will get promoted!!

  • Next match- Home – Matlock Golf Club – 11 August – 6.30pm.

Matlock Thursday Friendly League.
Away – Matlock Golf Club – 6 August – 1.45pm.

So you can’t have good wins every week, well we can’t anyway. The Golf Club are considerably ahead of us in the league. Come to think of it everybody is. After the doubles games we were trailing 36 – 55. This was after a game and a half by Dennis E and Audrey B who were 13 – 3 down, but came back to win 21 – 13. How about that. Unfortunately we were not at our best in the singles with only two of our six winning. Rick M won 15 – 10 and Dot H won 15 – 14. Well done you two. The final result though was a defeat 139 – 106. Still propping up the division. No league matches next week as it is the annual Greenaway Charity competition.

  • Next match – Greenaway – 13 August.

Sunday sees us with a Club competition, the Round Robin. Having had a square one it’s good to get a round one. You ornithological peeps need to do some birding down at Parsons Croft this Sunday 10.30am.

PARWICH CROWN GREEN BOWLS CLUB

Having found the bike helmet and filled our faces with fish and chips it was back to the grind of home league matches. It didn’t work out too badly either and with only five weeks left for us to try and save our place in the top division of the Thursday Friendly League we needed to be at our best (well sort of).

Matlock Tuesday bowls league.
Home – Youlgrave – 28 July – 6.30pm.

In the away fixture earlier in the season we lost by quite a margin and following last week’s match we had dropped down to sixth place in the league even though we had won. A good score was needed to get us back and what a score we got. After Dawn’s television commitments she turned on the style with Dot (having also learnt to walk on water) and the dynamic duo won 21 – 0, what a score. Not to be outdone Edith and Sue A also turned in a fabulous score winning 21 – 4. Harry B and Tony A had a poor win!! Only winning by 21 – 7 another great score. Dennis and Clara E narrowly lost 21 – 16. The overall result worked out in the end Parwich 79, Youlgrave 32. We were 5 points behind our opponents, but this result will put us some way ahead of them and may even put us back up a further place or two.

  • Next match- Away – Bakewell – 4 August – 6.30pm.

Matlock Thursday Friendly League.
Home – Whitworth Park – 30 July – 1.45pm.

As you know we are propping up the division and Whitworth Park are quite a way ahead of us in the league and although we did not win any of the three doubles we were in touching distance of them at only 63 to 44 down. Could our singles players do the business for us? Well out of the six singles we won five and the one we lost we only lost by 2 points. You see not only does herself (Dawn) sort out matters in the Tuesday League she can also get the job done on Thursdays as well, winning 15 – 4. Adding up the scores we finished 88 – 58, giving us a really good win by 132 – 121. Next week we play at the Golf Club and struggle there; keep your fingers for us.

  • Next match – Away – Matlock Golf Club – 6 August – 1.45pm.

Because of the inclement weather the friendly against Ashbourne Park was postponed. Not sure if we will have enough time to re-arrange the game.

PARWICH CROWN GREEN BOWLS CLUB

Now you have been told about the wonders of playing Crown Green Bowls, but in addition to the great venues that we get to, you can also eat out even though you lose the match!

Matlock Tuesday bowls league.
Away – Whitworth Park – 21 July – 6.30pm.

This team are vying for promotion to the top division, we on the other hand are attempting to keep our fourth place. We only managed to win one game, but this was the catalyst for the rest of the match. Clara and Dennis E got us off to this good start winning 21 – 11. Great result. Now again you may not believe this but Edith and Rick lost! However, they only lost by 3 points. Pat and John B had a super comeback. At one point they were 16 – 1 down, but came back to again only lose by three points. All of these losses did equate to 72 points. Unfortunately Whitworth scored 74. Now for the good bit, close to Whitworth Park is a very good ‘Chippy’ so having had a game of bowls you can dine out in style with fish and chips!! What a way to drown your sorrows.

  • Next match- Home – Youlgrave – 28 July – 6.30pm.

Matlock Thursday Friendly League.
Away – Baslow – 23 July – 1.45pm.

Again this team are second in the league and we, as you wonderful followers of this stuff will know, are bottom, and proud of it. When we play in this league if you turn up you get a game. The rationale is we want to enjoy it. It is the Friendly League after all. Other teams on the other hand only play members who have a reasonable potential of winning, hence we put out 12 players whereas Baslow who have loads of members put out a team of only 10 players. Two people therefore who played in the doubles then played in the singles which may be regarded as an advantage. The chances of us winning this match anyway were small and our attempts unfortunately proved to be the case. A bit of a whinge really, but there you go. We lost 141 – 112, which will still mean we are bottom of the league.

  • Next match – Home – Whitworth Park – 30 July – 1.45pm.

A cracking game ensued last Sunday in the ‘square robin’ (I am assured that no animals were harmed in the playing of this game). It was won by Edith and John H. Well done you two. This Sunday we are entertaining Ashbourne Park at Parsons Croft in a friendly. A good afternoon should happen all being well, although the weather may not be kind to us, but we will be there, will you?

John B.

P.S. – Now you are aware that Dawn and Edith are very good bowls players and can nearly walk on water, but you did not know that they are also pundits for the BBC on the NHS – Vis – The Real Peak Practice.
P.P.S. – The really nice bike helmet is still with us. Unfortunately the empty Stella cans and the half eaten cake are no longer with us.

Walking on Water

PARWICH CROWN GREEN BOWLS CLUB

At present we are hanging on by the skin of our teeth. All the other teams are playing much better than us or are we playing worse? Whatever the outcome you have to tip your hat to your village team. Nobody in the league has fewer members to choose a team from and yet we can very often beat teams with in excess of 50 players.

Matlock Tuesday bowls league.
Home – Wirksworth – 14 July – 6.30pm.

There was a person who it is said walked on water and without being too irreverent we have two ladies in our club who can do the same! Dawn A fabulously assisted by Sue A won their game 21 – 2. When you get a result like that you wonder how it is done, I only wish I could do it. Edith playing this week with Tony A also did the business winning 21 – 17. Told you Dawn and Edith were water walkers! John B and Dennis E just missed out, losing by one shot 20 – 21. The final result was Parwich 71, Wirksworth 61. Because of other results last week we had slipped to sixth place in the league, maybe we could move up a place. Next week we play a team close to the top and we are away so we do need perhaps some more divine intervention.

  • Next match- Away – Whitworth Park – 21 July – 6.30pm.

Matlock Thursday Friendly League.
Home – Hazelwood – 16 July – 1.45pm.

Hazelwood are one of the ‘massive’ clubs compared to us and we inevitably struggle because of their strength in depth, however on occasions we can get close, even if we don’t win. Liz and John H had a marathon of a game of 28 ends finally coming home to win 21 – 17. Clara E and Harry B also had a very long game, but came up just short 16 – 21. After the doubles we were trailing 47 – 59. Now here is a turn up for the books, we lost 5 out of the 6 singles games, but still came out on top 80 – 77. Can you believe that? Again Dawn A was the star of the show to give us our best win 15 – 6. It does not matter which day of the week it is Dawn does the job. Although we did eventually lose the match 127 – 136 we may well get closer to the people ahead of us. If you recall we are bottom of the league so the only way is up!

  • Next match – Away – Baslow – 23 July – 1.45pm.

On Sunday we are playing a club competition, the Square Robin, who thinks these things up? If you want to find out what one of these square robin things is come down to Parsons Croft on Sunday and find out? The game starts at 10.30 in the morning. Hardly up by then, is it daylight at that time in the morning?

PARWICH CROWN GREEN BOWLS CLUB

Quite a rollercoaster of a ride this season one week we are playing really well and the next week we are being well beaten. This week unfortunately it’s the latter. However we did try against teams a lot higher than us in the league. The fact that we are bottom of the Thursday league and everybody is higher than us is immaterial!

Matlock Tuesday bowls league.
Away – Matlock Park – 7 July – 6.30pm.

Back to Matlock again this week. Matlock are a very safe second in the league and almost certain to be promoted, we on the other hand had slipped on ‘goal’ difference to fifth, which for us would be a good place to finish. The green is in the riverside park in Matlock and the public stop and gaze at the goings on on the green, particularly the visitors from down south who play the ‘other’ form of bowls. All of this verbiage is to avoid letting you know we lost 77 – 58. There were a couple of good Parwich games, Rick and Edith coming back from 10 nil down to win 21 – 14. What a gem of a pair they are. Similarly Pat and John B down 15 – 5 coming back to lose 21 – 15. Not bad really. Our fifth place is in jeopardy after this result though.

  • Next match- Home – Wirksworth – 14 July – 6.30pm.

Matlock Thursday Friendly League.
Away – Bradwell – 16 July – 1.45pm.

The weather was really good for the match, which is about all you can say. Try as we may we lost the three doubles games leaving us trailing 63 – 32. We shared the six singles three each with Rick M leading the way winning 15 – 4. John B and Edith also coming on strong with good wins. Unfortunately these wins were not enough to get us anywhere near Bradwell. The score for the singles was 74 – 73 to Bradwell, giving a final score of 137 – 105. So we will still be propping up the league. We like the lower league anyway!

  • Next match – Home – Hazelwood – 16 July – 1.45pm.

Pulsating Parwich

PARWICH CROWN GREEN BOWLS CLUB

Having had pulverised Parwich last week we had pulsating Parwich, thankfully, this week. We needed to do well in the Tuesday league and even better in the Thursday league, so read on to excite your bowling senses!

Matlock Tuesday bowls league.
Away – Matlock Bath – 30 June – 6.30pm.

As you may recall this green is shaped like a fifty pence piece and has all sorts of dips and humps. In terms of league position we are marginally ahead of them. Of the four games in the match we managed to win three. The magical Edith and Rick sorted out their opponents 21 – 11. Dawn, playing with John B again (he needs his hand held bless him) came back again from the brink of defeat to snatch a win 21 -20. To put the icing on the cake Harry B and Val K won 21 – 18. Unfortunately Dennis and Clara E couldn’t manage a win, but put up a great fight against a very good pair. The final result was a Parwich win 73 – 70. This will keep us slightly ahead of Matlock and may even keep us in our current fourth position in the league. Next week we are playing a team trying for promotion so it will be a hard match.

  • Next match- Away – Matlock Park – 7 July – 6.30pm.

Matlock Thursday Friendly League.
Home – Youlgrave – 2 July – 1.45pm.

Those of you who read this stuff may well recall the elephant buried under Youlgrave’s  green, well we needed to play at our absolute best on our green to overturn the very poor result on that green. We didn’t do too badly. We tried really well in the doubles with Liz H and Harry B doing their stuff to win 21 – 11. Unfortunately this was our only win, but we got close. 53 to 46 in favour of Youlgrave. The maximum you can score in the six singles is 90, we only got 89! Rick M and John B winning to 3 and 6. The final score was 135 – 113 to Parwich somewhat easing our dismal showing on their green. We are currently bottom of the league and I fear that even after this great win we will still be holding everybody up.

  • Next match – Away – Bradwell – 9 July – 1.45pm.

This week we will be having a Club match on Sunday at 2.00 pm. Come and have a look.

Good tea and cake to die for!!

Contrasting Fortunes

PARWICH CROWN GREEN BOWLS CLUB

These matches are the reverse games from the start of the season and unfortunately we have not had as good a start to the second half of the season as we had at the beginning. Indeed in one of the leagues we have managed to get what can only be described as another very low score.

Matlock Tuesday bowls league.
Home – Bradwell – 23 June – 6.30pm.

Two home matches on the trot and Pat B and Dot H are rapidly becoming our star turn, thank goodness. They played a very experienced pair and won by the princely sum of 21 – 6. What a pair they are. Last week we put out a call for more Dawn’s, this week we need more Pat and Dot’s. Know where there are any of these? Edith partnered this week by Sue A also turned on the style winning 21 – 10. Our esteemed captain Dawn A partnered herself with John B, silly lady and nearly paid the price for her daftness. They clawed their way back from the brink of defeat 20 – 16 down to win 21 -20, phew! All in all we had a thankfully good win 76 – 57. Can’t believe we were still fourth in the league, with this good win with luck we may stay there.

  • Next match- Away – Matlock Bath – 30 June – 6.30pm

Matlock Thursday Friendly League.
Away – Hathersage – 25 June – 1.45pm.

Now you really do need a lot of players in this league, 12 is the best number, six for doubles and six for singles, we were close to managing only seven when Rick M stepped in to fill the breach and he even brought his wife along (a none bowling better half) who scored for us. Thanks Ida. Anyway it probably mattered not a lot as we managed to get less than 100 again this week. Only Tony A and Edith managed a win in the doubles and our brilliant captain John H brought us our only win in the singles. On our green in the first match of the season we beat Hathersage scoring 129. Oh happy days! I suppose we can look forward to a return to the nether regions of the lower league next year. Seriously though we are in dire need of more, particularly younger Members. Come and help us out please.

  • Next match – Home – Youlgrave – 2July – 1.45pm.

Have a good wakes week everyone and enjoy the festivities.

Dawns Wanted

PARWICH CROWN GREEN BOWLS CLUB

Can you believe we are half way through the season already; we do not seem to be getting our act together really this year as this week’s results indicate. At least the weather seems to have perked up a bit. Hope our bowls does too.

Matlock Tuesday bowls league.
Home – Ashwood Park – 16 June – 6.30pm.
Ashwood are just a few points below us in the league and we needed to be at our best, unfortunately we weren’t. Pat B and Dot H really showed how to do it by turning on the style and winning 21 – 8. Edith and Rick M also did their bit winning 21 – 18, but our other two pairs failed to make any impression on their opponents. The final result was a defeat by 68 points to 65. We will have to try and do much better in the second half of the season.
Next match- Home – Bradwell – 23 June – 6.30pm

Matlock Thursday Friendly League.
Away – Matlock Park – 18 June – 1.45pm.
Having gained promotion last season we started very well with some good results, unfortunately our frailties are beginning to show and they did so again this week. Our only win in the doubles games was a resounding one by Harry B and Dennis E our two remaining pairs unfortunately could not get close to the opposition and we found ourselves down 58 – 34. Well our singles players will get us back on track, not this week. Only Dawn A managed a win, but it was a great win 15 – 8. Wish we had a few more Dawn’s, anybody know where we can find some?? John H, Tony A and Pat B put up a good fight, but to no avail and the final result was Matlock 141, Parwich 99. Less than 100 again this week. We were third from bottom but I fear we may well be holding everybody up this week.
Next match – Away – Hathersage – 25 June – 1.45pm.

Last Sunday we held one of our Club competitions which was won by Dawn and Edith remember them? The cups were presented by Alan Johnson on behalf of an old member Cynthia Brown who unfortunately had died at short while ago. Thank you Alan.
