At Least The Sun Shone

PARWICH CROWN GREEN BOWLS CLUB

So having played the top teams in the respective divisions and dipped ourselves a crippler in one of the games we needed to bounce back with all haste, well we nearly did! At least the sun shone on us even if the result in one of our games didn’t.

Matlock Tuesday bowls league.
Away – Chatsworth – 9 June – 6.30pm.

Did we bounce back, well not exactly, more like a deflated balloon really. Thank goodness we had our Edith back in peak condition. Nearly peak condition her knee is still not right, however, that mattered not a jot as with her trusty partner Rick M they marmalised the opposition 21 – 5. Best not mention the score that John B and Dennis E got, but Edith’s crushing win only cancelled out their scoring loss!! Our other two pairs tried valiantly, but to no avail and we lost the match 68 – 56. Our position was fourth in the division, but this defeat will certainly drop us a place or two.

  • Next match- Home – Ashwood Park – 16 June – 6.30pm

Matlock Thursday Friendly League.
Home – Bakewell – 11 June – 1.45pm.

Having been well and truly beaten the past couple weeks a good win was essential as we had dropped to third from bottom in the league. Bakewell are having a good season and are third in the league. As you faithful followers of this prose know we can tend to struggle in the doubles games. Today we did not disappoint but Pat B and Sue A beat one of the best pairs in the league 21 – 18. How about that! Our other two pairs did not disgrace themselves either and after the three games we were only 12 points down. In the singles we shone again winning four out of the six. Edith again strutting her stuff to win 15 – 5, followed closely by her Tuesday doubles partner Rick M who won 15 -7. What a pair. The singles results gave us an 80 – 60 advantage which took us through to an overall win by 128 – 120. Although this is a really good result I don’t think it will lift us out of our dire position. Keep your fingers crossed for next week.

  • Next match – Away – Matlock Park – 18 June – 1.45pm.

At least nobody died

PARWICH CROWN GREEN BOWLS CLUB

Well you can tell that the teams we played this week are top of their respective leagues, we struggled all the way. We again are beset by lack of players six players were away and two were very walking wounded! If you think you can help us out please come and join us your bowls club needs you.

Matlock Tuesday bowls league.
Home – Hathersage – 2 June – 6.30pm.

Hathersage are streets ahead of all teams in the division. We were lying fourth in the division and needed to try our best and with depleted resources. However we do have a superb pair in Dawn A, our captain, and Dot H. Did they do us proud or what? They won 21 – 4, they could not have done anymore than they did. The rest of us had to try even harder so as not to let them down. Unfortunately we did not win any more games but we did accumulate enough points in losing to earn an extremely honourable draw. What a result for the tiny club of Parwich. The scores were 67 each and with the other results in the division in we are still fourth.

  • Next match- Away – Chatsworth – 9 June – 6.30pm

Matlock Thursday Friendly League.
Home – Hope Works A – 04 June – 1.45pm.

Again Hope Works are way ahead of any other team and if they carry on as they have been playing they will win the championship, we on the other hand need to keep going to see if we can stay in the top division. On today’s showing however we will struggle to say the least. We had walking wounded playing for all they were worth, but to no avail. We lost the doubles games 63 – 29. Because we were short of people, three players had to play in the singles games. Dot H carried on from Tuesday night’s match and stormed to a 15 – 8 win. Good onyer Dot, we were ever so glad you came. Our Captain John H also played on blinder winning 15 – 12 against one of their best players. Unfortunately try as the rest of us could we did not win any more games. The final result was Hope Works 143, Parwich 90. Considering our parlous state not a bad result really particularly if you say it quickly. We were seventh out of twelve, but fear this will drop us down a place or two to say the least. At least the sun shone for once.

  • Next match – Home – Bakewell – 11 June – 1.45pm.

A good time was had by all last Sunday being well entertained by Ashbourne Park. These Friendly games are very good fun, and the teas that are provided are to die for!

PARWICH CROWN GREEN BOWLS CLUB

Can you believe we are more than a third of the way through the season already and we are just about holding our own, although one result this week was a bit of a letdown to say the least.

Matlock Tuesday bowls league.
Away – Matlock Golf Club – 26 May – 6.30pm.

It really would be good to play a Tuesday night match in a little warm sunshine. This evening was dull and overcast and blowing a cold cold gale at the Golf Club. The bowls though was hot. We shared the games two each with Dawn A and Dot H playing like they knew what they were doing to win 21 – 13. Harry B and Dennis E also came up with a 21 – 19 win and John and Pat B having led for most of the game just came up short in the end 20 – 21. Edith R is still suffering with her bad knee bless her but struggled on with an equally disabled Val K, only just losing. The games were long and close and the match did not finish until 9.30pm. Still a good win to Parwich 77 – 74. Hard match next week as we are playing the league leaders.

  • Next match- Home – Hathersage – 2 June – 6.30pm

Matlock Thursday Friendly League.
Away – Wirksworth – 28 May – 1.45pm.

For once the sun was shining; however we were not shining on the green. At one point I thought we may well be in for a maximum score against us. We had seven players missing this week with people on holiday or not well so we could only muster 9 instead of the required 12. Not sure whether we would have done any better had we had a full team. Anyway we were well and truly beaten in the doubles losing 63 – 26. We did rally a bit in the singles games although we only managed to win two games out of the six. However Dawn A and Rick M won handsomely to lead us to 74 – 70 for Parwich. As you will see though we lost 133 – 100, at least we got to 100. It’s the matches against the league leaders next week because we are playing the leaders in this league as well. Hope we get to more than 100 next week.

  • Next match – Home – Hope Works – 4 June – 1.45pm.

A good time was had by all last Sunday and this Sunday should be equally good. We are going to Ashbourne Park for a friendly.

A Winning Week

PARWICH CROWN GREEN BOWLS CLUB

We were playing two really good teams this week, both ahead of us in the leagues, but we came through with flying colours.

Matlock Tuesday bowls league.
Home – Bakewell – 19 May – 6.30pm.

Bakewell were a few points ahead of us in the league, they were fourth and we were fifth. It did not auger well when Dot H and Val K lost the first game. Pat B and Sue A played superbly to beat their best pair 21 – 17, what a score. This was followed by an equally good win by Clara E and Harry B and by the same margin, 21 – 17. This left Rick M and Tony A to make up the points we were still down and to cap it all Rick had left his woods at home. Edith R lent Rick her woods and as you know our Edith has laser guided bowls. All Rick had to do was to drop them on the green and they roll down next to the jack. (I wish I could train my woods to do the same. It could be something to do with skill, but not a lot!!) They worked their magic a treat Rick and Tony winning 21 – 4. This gave us an overall score of Parwich 71, Bakewell 59. These extra points should take us above them in the league. Tricky game next week though.

  • Next match- Away – Matlock Golf Club – 26 May – 6.30pm

Matlock Thursday Friendly League.
Howe – Matlock Golf Club – 21 May – 1.45pm.

Last week we were struggling greatly to get a full team, this week three people sat on the sidelines; however the result for those who played was very satisfying. Matlock are well ahead of us in the league in third place so we needed to play well, and well we did play. Our doubles pairs carried on the good work from last week with Audrey and Harry B the pick of the bunch winning 21 – 9. The score after the three doubles was Parwich 59, Golf Club 47.
In the singles we won 4 out of the six games. The pick of the wins were Dawn A and John B winning 15 – 6 and 15 – 5 respectively. This gave us a score of 77 – 60 and an overall win 136 – 107. This will not let us overtake Matlock, but we will obviously be that much closer.

  • Next match – Away – Wirksworth B – 28 May – 1.45pm.

This Sunday there has been a change of plan and we are playing the open singles. 2.00pm start come and watch and have a cup of tea and a piece of cake. Guarantee it will be good.

It’s a Funny Old Game

PARWICH CROWN GREEN BOWLS CLUB

What has happened to the weather?. The season started in a blaze of sunshine both on and off the greens, but brass monkeys have been very prevalent of late. At least we are winning every now and again. To coin a phrase however, ‘it’s a funny old game’

Matlock Tuesday bowls league.
Away – Youlgrave – 12 May – 6.30pm.

Now those of you with good memories will recall that Youlgrave have an elephant buried in the middle of their green and you do need pitons sometimes to climb over the hump. Now you would think that if we win three out of the four games that an overall win would follow, nay not so on this green. Dawn A and John B won 21 – 14 and Sue A and Dennis E 21 – 16. Our Edith with her hurty, hurty knee won with Tony A. Unfortunately our fourth pair lost very well and the final score was Youlgrave 71, Parwich 66. Considering the shellacking we got playing in the Thursday League, quite a creditable result. Can’t wait to get them on our green, it’s a funny old game.

  • Next match- Home – Bakewell – 19 May – 6.30pm

Matlock Thursday Friendly League.
Away – Whitworth Park B – 14 May – 1.45pm.

We were very thin on the ground for this match; what with holidays and illness we only had 9 players instead of the usual 12. As you will know we sometimes struggle in the doubles games, not today though. We were magnificent winning all three and giving us a score of 63 – 34. Now for our strong singles players to really put the icing on the cake. Whoops! We only won one singles game and did not do very well scoring wise in the ones we lost either. Only Dawn A managed a win. The final score however was a win for Parwich 120 – 116. It’s a funny old game.

  • Next match – Home – Matlock Golf Club – 21 May – 1.45pm.

Another lovely afternoon last Sunday in our friendly with Hazelwood. The sandwiches and cake were to die for. You should have been there.

The Ups and Downs of Bowls

PARWICH CROWN GREEN BOWLS CLUB

At least we did not lose both our matches this week, although the one we did lose we lost with a vengeance!

Matlock Tuesday bowls league.
Home – Whitworth Park – 5 May

Usually we have good close games with Whitworth and although the match was good it certainly was not close. Out of the four games we only managed to win one. Captain fantastic Dawn and her great sidekick Dot sorted out the opposition and romped home 21 -14. If only our other pairs could have got up to even a trot it would have helped, but we lost very well. The score was Whitworth 77, Parwich 53. This result was even worse than the debacle at Wirksworth last week. We need to get ourselves together otherwise we will be bottom of the league. The snag is that next week we are playing at Youlgrave and those of you who read this twaddle will know that they have an elephant buried in the green. Wish us luck as we wave you goodbye.

  • Next match- Away – Youlgrave – 12 May – 6.30pm

Matlock Thursday Friendly League.
Home – Baslow A – 7 May – 1.45pm

Although we are playing in the giddy heights of the top division we are not bottom of the league, nearly but not quite. Baslow were second in the league and have played in this division for a long time. For once we could not get a full 12 people today. We could only muster 10, however what a team. After the doubles we were only 7 behind. Good start. Our singles players did us proud again with Rick M winning 15 – 5, closely followed by Tony A 15 – 8. All the remaining singles were very close, but we came out on top scoring 88 – 65. Only two off a maximum 90. The final score was Parwich 142, Baslow 126. What a result. Let us hope we can keep it up next week.

  • Next match – Away – Whitworth Park – 14 May – 1.45pm.

You missed a good afternoon last Sunday for those of you who did not turn up! Those of you who did had a good time and the tea and cake was a real bonus. This Sunday we are entertaining Hazelwood down at Parsons Croft for a friendly get together. Come along and watch – 2.00pm.

Anyone got any Carrots?

PARWICH CROWN GREEN BOWLS CLUB

The curate’s egg was very bad this week. Not only did we lose both our matches, but two of our wheels fell off.

 Matlock Tuesday bowls league.
Away – Wirksworth – 28 April.

So you perhaps did not realise that not only do you have to be reasonably accurate, but you also need to eat a lot of carrots so that you can see in the dark. This green is very large but we started well. Dawn A and Dot H had a great win 21 – 17. Clara E and Harry B came so close. They were well on for a win reaching 20 very easily, however, as you aficionados of this great game know you need 21. Try as they might they could not get the final point and finished losing 20 – 21. This game had lasted over two hours and the final pairs did not get on to the green until 7.45pm. Edith then had a problem with her knee and hobbled round, but sadly lost with Rick M. The final pair were still playing and darkness was falling rapidly. Try as we might we could not find any miners lamps or carrots and the game was lost. The final score was Wirksworth 80, Parwich 69.

Next match- Home – Whitworth Park – 5 May – 6.30pm

Matlock Thursday Friendly League.
Away – Hazelwood – 30 April- 1.45pm.

Hazelwood have played in the higher league for many years and the size of their club (150+ members) means they have a great pool of players to choose from. Anyway our doubles pairs battled all the way, but came second 60 – 35. Our singles players needed to play to the top of their ability and they did not disappoint. We won 4 out of the 6 games and went close in the other two, but the final score of 79 – 68 was not enough to swing the result in our favour. The final score was Hazelwood 131, Parwich 114. When you think that we only have 10% of their membership what a team we have.

Next match – Home – Baslow – 7 May – 1.45pm.

Don’t forget that we have another casual get together this Sunday at 2.00pm. All you need is a pair of flat soled shoes to have one of the best afternoons you can get. You don’t even need to eat carrots. You might need an umbrella though! Guaranteed great cakes and tea, rain or shine, come and join us.

A tale of two ends

PARWICH CROWN GREEN BOWLS CLUB

A bit of a curates egg so far this season. We are winning and losing. Hopefully we won’t lose all our matches in the same League.

Matlock Tuesday bowls league.
Home – Matlock Park- 21 April.

We usually have a close match against Matlock Park and this week to some degree was no exception. We did win two games each, unfortunately their wins were by a greater margin than ours. Harry B and Valerie K set us off with a good win 21 – 18. Edith R and Tony A bettered that result winning 21 – 12. Our other two pairs tried valiantly, but just failed. The final score was Matlock 72, Parwich 61. We have a really hard match next week on a very big green. Keep your fingers crossed.

  • Next match- Away- Wirksworth – 28 April- 6.30pm

Matlock Thursday Friendly League.
Home – Bradwell A – 23 April- 1.45pm.

We were back on our own green this week thank goodness and in very good nick it is too. Our doubles pairs did us proud this week winning two of the three games. Pat B and Audrey B winning really well 21 – 8. Having been down by 14 – 1 at one point Dennis E and John H fought back to lose by only 21 – 16. Some recovery! Dawn A and Clara E won the final game 21 – 18. The final score therefore after the doubles games being 58 – 47.

Very tight singles games this week. Thankfully we managed to win four out of the six games. The best win we had was our Edith who managed 15 – 10, followed closely by Tony A and Harry B 15 – 11. The final score was Parwich 77, Bradwell 76.

Mathematicians amongst you will therefore have work out a win for us 135 – 123. So far too wins and a drubbing in this League. Not sure how we will cope next week against Hazelwood very big club, very good team.

  • Next match – Away – Hazelwood – 30 April – 1.45pm.

You missed a really excellent get together last Sunday. 8 People turned up for a pleasant few ends. The cake and the tea weren’t bad either. You never know we may get a couple of new members yet. Thanks for coming, see you again, and anybody else who wants a bash, in a couple of weeks.

You Can’t Win ‘Em All!

PARWICH CROWN GREEN BOWLS CLUB

Having made a really great start to the new season, you can be sure something will come and bite you with a vengeance on the backside and it did this week.

Matlock Tuesday bowls league.
Home – Matlock Bath- 14 April.

Another beautiful evening down at Parsons Croft and the team responded to it. Rick M and Tony A led the way with a spectacular 21 – 6 win. Our Edith had been on holiday during the first week, but she made up for that while partnered with the on fire Dot H winning 21 – 7. Can this great form continue I hear you ask, too right it can. Parwich won the remaining two games in style giving us a clean sweep and maximum points 84 – 37. We don’t manage too many maximums so we need to soak in the reality.

  • Next match- Home- Matlock Park – 21 April- 6.30pm

Matlock Thursday Friendly League.
Away – Youlgrave – 16 April- 1.45pm.

So having played on the Old Baseball Ground last week we played on a sheet on glass. We have not been to Youlgrave for a while in the Tuesday League due to their being in a higher division. Little did we realise that not only did you need to walk very carefully in case you slipped on the ice but you needed a Sherpa to guide you over the hump in the middle of the green. Nobody had told us that an elephant had been buried in the green sometime time ago! As you knowledgeable folks will know we very often struggle in the doubles games, well we struggled in everything today. Pat B and Harry B played a stormer to only lose 18 – 21. Sue A and John H tried all the way but in the end succumbed 15 – 21. The final game also saw us lose 21 – 8. Youlgrave 63, Parwich 41. Now for the singles fight back.

Bearing in mind that the maximum points you get in the singles is 90, we just made it past halfway. We only managed to get to double figures in two games. In the end we were put out of our misery losing 90 – 50, one to chalk up to experience. A total result of Youlgrave 152, Parwich 91 thanks to the elephant under the green. I wonder how we will get on when we play them on our patch?

  • Next match – Home – Bradwell – 23 April – 1.45pm.

Don’t forget that we will be having a little social get together at Parsons Croft on Sunday afternoon for new members and anybody else who would like to come down. Even if you don’t want to play you can get a great piece of homemade cake and a cup of tea. See you there.

What a Start to the Season

PARWICH CROWN GREEN BOWLS CLUB

Only on very few occasions do things really come together as you would have hoped. The first week of the new bowls season and the sun is shining and to cap it all we won both matches and we have three new members. It can’t get much better than that can it? Suffice it to say it fetches a lump to your throat.

Matlock Tuesday bowls league.
Away – Bradwell – 7 April.

It really is a very picturesque green at Bradwell, but unfortunately somebody put the wrong sand on the green. A bit like British Rail with leaves on the line and virtually killed the grass. The only consolation was that it was the same for both teams. Anyway on the equivalent of the old Baseball Ground at Derby we took to the green. Dot H and Pat B were the stars of the show winning 21-6. Two of our other pairs came home winners by 21-11. The final score was Bradwell 49 Parwich 72. What about that?

  • Next match- Home- Matlock Bath- 14 April- 6.00pm

Matlock Thursday Friendly League.
Home – Hathersage- 9 April- 1.45pm.

So we had a real disaster in this league last year, we got promoted to the higher division! It’s bad enough having to play in the lower divisions, but playing with the elite. Anyway fortunately John H our green keeper extraordinaire had put the correct sand on our green and it looked great. A beautiful emerald green. The bowls played by us was fairly good also. Dot H staring again in the doubles with John B winning 21-10. Dennis and Clara E losing by only one point 20-21, giving us a score of Parwich 49 Hathersage 52 after the doubles.

As followers of this wonderful editorial will know we usually do quite well in the singles games, but in the higher division? In the six singles games Pat B shone again and so did Val K both winning 15-10. Tony A also played well to win 15-12. The result was in doubt right up until the final singles finished with our captain John H winning 15-13. In all we won five of the six games giving us a score of 80-74 and an overall score of Parwich 129, Hathersage 126. Can’t be bad.

  • Next match – Away – Youlgrave- 16 April – 1.45pm.

The Results You’ve Been Waiting For

PARWICH CROWN GREEN BOWLS CLUB

I know you are all wondering how the Bowls Club finally did this year, well it was mixed fortunes. The suspense you can cut with a knife, it beats the hell out of the Scottish Referendum results.

In the Matlock Tuesday League two teams are promoted and relegated. Fortunately we were not involved with the latter. I perhaps should point out at this stage that there are only two divisions in the League and we play in the lower of the two so thankfully nobody can get relegated from this league! Anyway there were times this year when little Parwich was riding high at the top of the division. We did not last there very long, but at least we can tell the grand children how we achieved national immortality for a week or two. So having been at the giddy heights of division toppers we inevitably could not sustain the required momentum and we slid down the league. Our final position was fourth. Our best result for donkey’s years. I think that the main reason for our fall down the division was that we did not invest during the transfer window and the players we have are two old!

Our fortunes in the Matlock Thursday League were not so good. We got promoted! Disaster! The Club had been there or thereabouts all season, but with no real danger of promotion, however some of our last results and those of other teams meant that we finished up third. Now of course were this the Tuesday League it would have been ok, (only top two promoted) in this League, however, some dipstick playing with the rules means that the top three go up. What a mess. We will inevitably have to invest heavily in new players during the close season. Having not achieved much joy in getting new players locally, going further afield is a must. I’m not sure if they play Crown Green Bowls in Clacton or the Isle of White, but we will certainly need to strengthen the squad.

I have not heard anything about indoor bowls yet, but I will let you know when I do. Until then have a good Christmas.

Final Cliffhanger

PARWICH CROWN GREEN BOWLS CLUB

Now is the time to say goodbye. Now is the time to yield a sigh. Now is the time to wend our way. (Until next year anyway.) It would have been nice to end on a winning note, but you can’t win all the time.

Matlock Tuesday bowls League.

An update on this league is that we managed to move up a place from fifth to fourth, our best result for quite a few years. We also won the same number of games as the team who came top. Not bad for our little Club.

Matlock Thursday Friendly League.
Home – Bakewell – 11 September.

Bakewell are second in the league and last week they beat the team at the top. Things did not auger well, and so it proved. As you know we sometimes don’t do very well in the doubles games and unfortunately this week was not good. We were behind 63 – 27. Our singles players did manage to retrieve the situation a little, but it was not enough to get us near to winning the match.

The final score was Bakewell 125, Parwich 103. As you readers of this fabulous weekly sports report will know we were in third place and the top three are promoted to the giddy heights of the top division. After this week’s result we will be lucky to stay there.

So that’s it for another year. Still desperate for new players and if we get promoted we will need them even more. We may get another invitation to play indoor bowls at Ashbourne Bowls Club on Monday afternoons. If we do I will let you know and you will be welcome to join us.

Only One Step Away

PARWICH CROWN GREEN BOWLS CLUB

So we managed to finish on a winning note in one league this week and the win in the other league keeps us on course to still get promoted. The difference this year has been the two new members we had, Sue and Tony A. Would that we could get a few more NEW MEMBERS.

Matlock Tuesday bowls league.
Home – Ashwood Park – 2 September.

Last match of the season in this league and we wanted to end on a high. With some great play from Harry B and John B this was achieved, they won 21 – 5. Another win was Dennis and Clara E who sorted out the opposition 21 – 16. Although we lost the other two games our scores were such that we came out on top 76 – 63. We were fifth in the league before this match and our score will ensure that we stay in that position, up a place from last year. What will we do on a Tuesday evening? Watch the inevitable repeats on the idiot’s lantern.

Matlock Thursday Friendly League.
Away – Whitworth Park – 4 September.

Now the very scary thing is that three teams get promoted from this league and we are third, and after today’s result we should stay there. Our doubles teams winning well two of the three games and giving us a ten point lead 58 – 48. In the singles we won 5 out of the six games, with Sue A scoring best 15 – 5. The final score was 85 – 50. Because we were one player short (11 instead of 12) we had to accept a 3 point penalty. Thankfully this did not affect the final score which was Whitworth Park 98, Parwich 140. Only one more match to play, against the team who are second in the league. Should be interesting.

  • Next match – Home – Bakewell  – 11 September – 1.45pm.

PARWICH CROWN GREEN BOWLS CLUB

Talk about ‘after the Lord Mayors show’, great one game awful in the other. Still only one match left in one league and two in the other.

Matlock Tuesday bowls league.
Away – Chatsworth – 26 August.

So Chatsworth are second in the division and we are fifth. After this match we will be very lucky if our position stays the same. We did not win one game! Only Tony A and John B got close losing 21 – 20. They did actually purposely lose as one of our opponents empties the refuse bins. We thought that if we won then who knows what could have happened to the villages refuse situation! Another incredible happening also occurred in the match which was Rick and Edith losing. I know it is difficult to believe, but it did happen. The final result was Chatsworth 84, Parwich 51. It is probably just as well that we only have one match left in this League.

  • Last match – Home – Ashwood Park – 2 September – 6.00pm.

Matlock Thursday Friendly League.
Home – Baslow – 28 August.

At present we are third in this league and today’s result will hopefully keep us there. We more than held our own in the doubles finishing just 9 points down. In the singles we missed getting a maximum score by one point, 89 out of a possible 90. The final result was Parwich 135, Baslow 105.

Only two matches left and if we carry on like this we may get promoted. Little Parwich in the top division that would be quite a result considering our lack of players.

  • Next match – Away – Whitworth Park.  – 4 September – 1.45pm.

Fight Back on the Green

PARWICH CROWN GREEN BOWLS CLUB

So with only a couple of matches left in the two leagues we play in and with virtually all the wheels having fallen off we needed to get back to winning ways and we did with a vengeance.

 Matlock Tuesday bowls league.
Home – Bradwell – 19 August.

We had done very well at Bradwell in the first half of the season where we managed a great win on their green. On our own green we were hoping for even more and we did not disappoint. We won all four games with the brilliant Edith and Rick strutting their stuff winning 21 – 8. Not to be outdone Tony A and John B matched their score 21 – 8. Dawn A and Dot H also had a fabulous win against Bradwell’s best pair coming in 21 – 19. Finally Dennis and Clara E won 21 – 12 giving us a clean sweep and a maximum score 84 to Bradwell’s 47. This win should certainly halt the steep slide down the division. Only two matches left in this league, let us hope we have a good couple of matches, although our next opponents are second in the division.

  • Next match – Away – Chatsworth – 26 August – 6.00pm.

Matlock Thursday Friendly League.
Away – Hope Works – 21 August

The good thing about going to Hope is that the ride over there is really nice and you can get a really good lunch in Castleton before you play the match in the afternoon. It’s a really hard life. John H and Ian J were our only winners in the three doubles games, but Dot H and Pat B came back from being 8 – 20 down to only just lose 17 – 21. What a fight back. At the end of the doubles we were behind 57 – 50.

As you aficionados of this marvellous sports report will know we can do quite well in the singles games and today was no exception winning 4 out of the 6 games. The score was 70 to Parwich, 61 to Hope. We scraped a win therefore 120 to 118. Hope Works were one place below us in the league and this win will keep them there. Whether it will be good enough to keep us in third place in the league we will have to see.

  • Next match – Home – Baslow  – 28 August.

Great Round Robin competition last Sunday with Rick M winning the main half of the draw and Dot H winning the lower half of the draw for the second year in a row. This Sunday we are going to Hazelwood for a friendly match where they treat us right royally.

Found the Snakes this Week

PARWICH CROWN GREEN BOWLS CLUB

Only one league match this week because of the Greenaway Competition, and judging by the result of the one we played it was just as well.

Matlock Tuesday bowls league.
Away – Matlock Golf Club – 12 August.

Perhaps what we should have done was to challenge the opposition to a round of golf instead of bowls; we surely could not have done any worse. We only managed to win one game and that was our redoubtable pair Edith and Rick and even they struggled. From being second in the division a few matches ago we are plummeting down the table at a great rate of knots. The final score was Golf Club 69 Parwich 43. At least we played well up until the middle of the season. I can’t believe we have only three matches left and then that’s it until next April.

  • Next match – Home – Bradwell – 19 August – 6.00pm.

Matlock Thursday Friendly League.
Greenaway Charity Competition – 7 August.

As I mentioned last week this Competition is to try to raise much needed funds for the Greenaway Centre in Darley Dale. The weather is usually very kind to us and this year was no exception, it only rained very lightly for a short time. Our members have done well in past years, and have won the shield on quite a few occasions. Not to be this year though. You are given a partner for the Competition so it is very much the luck of the draw. Both Rick M and Ian J and Val K (playing together) were knocked out in the semi – final. Better luck next year hopefully. The Charity however will benefit from a shed load of money thanks to the Bowlers digging deep.

  • Next match – Away – Hope Works, Hope. – 21 August.

We are playing our Round Robin Club competition this Sunday, starting at 10.30 at Parsons Croft. You are welcome to join us any time during the day.

Be Careful What You Wish For

PARWICH CROWN GREEN BOWLS CLUB

Why do people take things so literally, we only wanted to lose the occasional match not to disappear into a losing spiral.  Well at least we won one match this week.

Matlock Tuesday bowls league.
Home – Youlgrave – 5 Aug.

When we played at Youlgrave earlier in the year we played in a thunderstorm, one of the few times this year when this has occurred. It even tried to rain here this week, perhaps it would have been better had it done so. Harry B and Val K fought back well to win 21 – 17. Similarly Tony A and Dennis E lost narrowly 21 – 16. After two games only one point in it. The two final games ended 21 – 7 to Youlgrave (enough said) with Rick M and Edith R pulling out all the stops in their usual inimitable fashion to repeat a win for us 21 – 7. We therefore just lost the match by one point 65 – 66.

  • Next match – Away – Matlock Golf Club – 12 August – 6.30pm.

Matlock Thursday Friendly League.
Home – Chatsworth A – 7 August.

We had been doing quite well in this league until last week’s painful loss, so we needed to get back into the swing of things this week. Our three doubles pairs did us proud winning two games to one and giving us a lead of 56 to 50.

As you avid readers of this scintillating copy will know our singles players do, more often than not, keep us in the match and quite often give us the winning edge. Thankfully they came through for us again this week winning four of the six games and only narrowly losing a fifth. This gave us a score of 78 – 66. The final overall result was 134 – 116 to Parwich. An excellent turnaround from last week. We had dropped down to fourth in the league after the loss so hopefully this win will give us a chance to go up a place.

No match next week in this league as it is the annual charity game to provide as much money as possible for the Greenaway centre in Darley Dale. Keep your fingers crossed for good weather. In the past Parwich players have done quite well in this competition let’s hope the trend continues.

  • Next match – Away – Greenaway Competition – 14 August.

On Sunday we are playing a Club competition – Ladies and Men’s singles. Not sure the weather is going to be good though. See you down at Parsons Croft about 2.00ish. The kettle will be on.

Welcome Losses?

PARWICH CROWN GREEN BOWLS CLUB

So having said it was getting critical in terms of wins, the Crown Green Bowls genie came out of the bottle and we lost both matches this week – phew! Actually it would be good to play in the higher divisions of the leagues, but we would struggle with the few players we have. How about coming to join us?

Matlock Tuesday bowls league.
Away – Whitworth Park – 29 July.

When we played Whitworth at Parwich we only beat them by one point. They took their revenge and inflicted on us only our second defeat of the season. The games were shared two apiece, but their wins were by a greater margin than ours. Rick M and Dennis E, however, tried their darndest and won 21 – 7, the best win by either side. The final score was Whitworth 67, Parwich 63. We were just ahead of them in the league and although we lost we will stay ahead.

  • Next match – Home – Youlgrave – 5 August – 6.30pm.

Matlock Thursday Friendly League.
Away – Matlock Bath – 31 July.

This is a really peculiar green which can be best described as the shape of a fifty pence piece. It has so many humps and hollows that it is very difficult to ‘read’. Because of the lack of rain the green was like a sheet of glass. You only had to gently send the bowl and it went like a rocket into the Derwent.
Things did not bode well for us when we lost the doubles 63 – 31. Our singles players have done us proud this season, but the score to make up was far too much and in the end, although we shared the games three each we still trailed 66 – 65. The final result therefore was Whitworth 129, Parwich 96.

  • Next match – Home – Chatsworth A – 7 August.

Our own green at Parsons Croft could do with a little water to help the grass for next week otherwise sending a wood in Parwich may well finish up in the Derwent as well.

More Winning

PARWICH CROWN GREEN BOWLS CLUB

Well it’s beginning to get critical now as we are still doing rather well in the league. Fortunately we only had one match this week although the Open Doubles on Thursday was a good afternoon.

Matlock Tuesday bowls league.
Home – Buxton Park – 22 July.

As I mentioned last week this team did not beat us in the first half of the season, we never had a look in! So far they are the only team who have inflicted a loss on us. We needed to play at our best as they are also top of the league. The first two games ended one each and the points score was Parwich 35, Buxton 36, couldn’t be closer.

Our illustrious leader and Captain Dawn A, as always more than ably assisted by Dot H, started to pull us ahead and finished up winners by 21 – 15. You do not need me to tell you how the immensely talented Edith and the remorseless Rick did in the final game romping home winners by 21 – 6. Not only did we avenge our defeat of earlier in the season, but won by a handsome 77 – 57. This will not affect the league positions, but will hopefully keep us there or there abouts. We will definitely have to start losing.

  • Next match – Away – Whitworth Park – 29 July – 6.30pm.

Matlock Thursday Friendly League.
Home – Blank week this week.

Instead we played our Open Doubles competition. What a great afternoon, not only was the weather good, but the bowls was even better. After some close matches Dennis E and Dawn A came out on top. A good day was had by all. A pity that more people did not see it.

  • Next match – Away – Matlock Bath – 31 July.

We entertained Ashbourne Park last Sunday and again we had a most enjoyable afternoon. The tea was fabulous and the bowls was even better. You really missed a treat on all counts.

Bowlers Strut their Stuff

Matlock Tuesday bowls league.
Away – Chatsworth – 15 July.

Well another boring win this week. Fortunately the three teams ahead of us are also doing well otherwise we would be right up there. We did win three out of the four games and had good score in the game we lost. Dawn and Dot were convincing winners 21 – 12, with Tony A and Val K virtually matching them by winning 21 – 13. Even without the ever present Rick, Edith joined with Clare E won 21 – 18. The final score was Chatsworth 64, Parwich 79. Only 5 points from the maximum, a really good solid performance by all. Next week we entertain the team who didn’t beat us when we met at the start of the season, they thrashed us. We will certainly try our best next Tuesday to reverse the result. Oh, and they are also top of the league.

  • Next match – Home – Buxton Park – 22 July – 6.30pm.

Matlock Thursday Friendly League.
Home – Whitworth Park – 17 July.

No royal patronage this week, She doesn’t know what she’s missing, as indeed the vast proportion of Parwich residents don’t. Anyway, we played the top of the league this week and considering our player resources we more than held our own. We got a good win in one of the doubles games, but sadly came unstuck in the other two and trailed 59 – 46 at the start of the singles. Although we shared the games three each, the deficit from the doubles was too large for us to make up and we finished up losing 117 – 123. Not bad for a hick ‘out in the sticks’ Club like Parwich. Fortunately this loss may well drop us a place or two from the giddy heights of second in the league!

  • Next match – Away – Blank week- 24 July

Another friendly this Sunday, come down to Parsons Croft around 2.00pm and see some of the best bowlers in the Matlock League strut their stuff. You will be amazed how good they are.

Parwich is Rampant

PARWICH CROWN GREEN BOWLS CLUB

We are still short of a wheelbarrow, but there you go, however we are in grave danger of moving up the division of the leagues we play in. We will have to start losing.

Matlock Tuesday bowls league.
Home – Matlock Bath – 8 July.

We shared the games two each, but thankfully the two we lost were by not so great a margin as Matlock. We also have an Edith and Rick. How do they do it. They won by 21 – 2. In the other three games Tony and Sue won 21 – 17 and Harry and Dennis also were close, only just losing. The overall score finished 71 to Parwich and 61 to Matlock Bath. We are currently fourth in the league so we will have to take care we do not get promoted, well not unless we get a heap of new players.

  • Next match – Away – Chatsworth B – 15 July – 6.30pm.

Matlock Thursday Friendly League.
Away – Matlock Park – 10 July.

I am certain I saw Her Majesty peeping over the wall to watch us play bowls, well I think it was her. If it was her then she would have seen a rampant Parwich. Believe it or not we lost all three doubles games and yet we were only 4 points down trailing 63 – 59, what a great result. In the singles we did even better winning 5 out of the 6 games. Harry B winning 15 – 2, Tony A and Rick M winning 15 – 3, and it carried on from there. The final result in the singles was 84 – 34, what a match. The overall result was Parwich 143, Matlock 97. I bet the Queen was impressed.

  • Next match – Home – Whitworth Park- 17 July – 1.45.

We are playing one of our friendly games this Sunday. Come down and see what you are missing. 2.00pm Parsons Croft.

Barrows and Bowls

PARWICH CROWN GREEN BOWLS CLUB

So after 24 years disaster has struck the Bowls Club, the second hand wheelbarrow we had at the start has given up the ghost. They don’t make ‘em very well do they. Anyway has anybody got a wheelbarrow they don’t want or use, because we could certainly give it a good home? Down to more mundane things like bowls we had two good wins.

Matlock Tuesday bowls league.
Away – Bakewell – 1 July.

Very unusual green, as I have said no such thing as a crown on the green, just lots of ripples. We managed to win three of the four games with John B and Dennis E winning 21 – 10. Dawn and Dot also came in well with a 21 – 11 win. For once Rick and Edith, although they won, were not as sure as usual, but a win is a win. The overall score was Parwich 72, Bakewell 56. Hopefully this will maintain our fourth place in the league.

  • Next match – Home – Matlock Bath – 8 July – 6.30pm.

Matlock Thursday Friendly League.
Home – Chatsworth – 3 July.

Having played our best match last week we hoped that we would keep up the good form this week. The match did not start well for us as we only managed to win one of the three doubles games. Still we were just about in touching distance trailing 62 – 48. The singles did not start well either as we lost the first two games, however the games were close. The last three games gave us the edge with Rick M winning 15 – 1 and Dawn A 15 – 3. The score was 83 – 55 to Parwich. This gave us an overall result of 131 – 117.

In next week’s match we are being given Royal patronage as we are playing in Matlock Park. (Well the Queen is visiting Matlock on that day and we can dream!). Anybody got any ideas on Parking?

  • Next match – Away – Matlock Park – 10 July – 1.45pm.

DON’T FORGET WE COULD REALLY DO WITH A NEW(ER) WHEELBARROW.

Not a Bad Week on the Green Sward

PARWICH CROWN GREEN BOWLS CLUB

No new humans have landed on the green this Monday, must have been a good football match on the idiots lantern. Thinking about it that is a contradiction in terms. Anyway back to a proper game, one and a half wins this week.

Matlock Tuesday bowls league.
Home – Wirksworth – 24 June.

The fixtures computer threw a wobbly this week as we played Wirksworth twice. At present they are just ahead of us in the league and we needed a good result. Although we won three out of the four games the one we lost was by some margin, hence the half win, it was a draw 70 points each. This of course will not improve our position in any way and may, dependent on how teams below us do, drop us a place or two. Difficult match next week against a team second in the league. Still we are just about holding our own.

  • Next match – Away – Bakewell – 1 July – 6.30pm.

Matlock Thursday Friendly League.
Away – Wirksworth – 26 June.

We very nearly had a hat full in this match, even though we were a player short. For once our doubles pairs showed how they can play the game, winning two out of the three games and only just losing the third. We won all six of the singles games with John H the pick of the bunch winning 15 – 1, Dawn and Rick coming a close second. Because we were one player short we had to deduct 3 points from our score, but even so this still gave us an aggregate of 148 – 82, what a win, only 5 points away from a maximum. Don’t think we will have the same result next week though.

  • Next match – Home – Chatsworth – 3 July – 1.45pm.

Great result also from Open Gardens last week, let us hope we have an equally good time during Wakes Week.

Bowling in the Sunshine

PARWICH CROWN GREEN BOWLS CLUB

So for two weeks running we have had a new person visit us on our Monday open evening. Will we get someone else this coming this Monday? Mixed fortune this week on the green, but at least the sun is still shining.

Matlock Tuesday bowls league
Away – Ashwood Park – 17 June

In the past this has proved to be one of our bogie greens. For some reason we have not done very well here, however this week was thankfully a whole new experience not only for them, but for us. We only lost one of the four games and even that one was reasonably close margin. Dennis E and John B leading the way week with a 21 – 6 victory. Next came the ever reliable Edith and Rick partnership winning 21-9. The final score was Parwich 76, Ashwood Park 52. We were fourth in league so hopefully this win will keep us there or thereabouts. This match took us to half way in the season. Let us hope we carry on as we are.

  • Next match – Home – Wirksworth – 24 June – 6.30pm

Matlock Thursday Friendly League
Away – Bakewell – 19 June

For once we had more than 12 players this week, which makes a nice change. Bakewell green is long and very narrow and they have had a complete overhaul over the winter and what a difference it has made. The doubles again did not prove to be our best venture coming out 62 to 41 down. Even in the singles we were not at our best to start off with, but slowly we got our act together winning three games each and coming out on top 73 points to 63. As you will see though this was not sufficient for us to win the match finally going down 125 – 114.

  • Next match – Away – Wirksworth – 26 June – 1.45pm

Don’t forget ‘Open Gardens’ on Sunday. Buy lots of cream teas and plants.

Continues Sunny on the Greens

PARWICH CROWN GREEN BOWLS CLUB

As mentioned last week we played the top of the division this week and for once this year the weather was very kind to us for both matches. We even had a visitor on Monday night at our open evening, whatever next!

Matlock Tuesday bowls league
Home – Chatsworth A – 10 June

Chatsworth top of the division and unbeaten so far this year, until they met Parwich that is. The games were shared two each, but our wins were by a greater margin than theirs, hence our great win. Edith and Rick leading the way as usual, but all in all a really good team performance. We came out winners by 74 – 67. Believe it or not next week will be the last game in the first half of the season. Where did the first ten weeks go!

  • Next match – Away – Ashwood Park – 17 June – 6.30pm.

Matlock Thursday Friendly League
Home – Whitworth Park – 12 June

You need 12 players in this league to make a full team, unfortunately we were short by two people and in consequence we were deducted 6 points as a penalty. First time this has happed this year. Anyway our spectacular 10 not only did us proud, but won the match handsomely as well. Our doubles pairs only just lost 47 – 51. As very often happens our singles players came through with flying colours 87 – 44. With the reduction in our score by the six points we won 128 – 95.

  • Next match – Away – Bakewell – 19 June – 1.45pm.

No Club matches now until July so come on down on Monday nights otherwise you will be forced to watch the World Cup on the Idiots Lantern.

Sunny on the Greens

PARWICH CROWN GREEN BOWLS CLUB

One very good win and one very good loss this week!

Matlock Tuesday bowls league
Away – Bradwell – 3 June

The green at Bradwell commands really great views, however we do not usually do very well here. Tonight we managed to change things. For the first time in a very long time Edith and Rick lost. We could hardly believe it. They only just lost though. Our other pairs all won and provided us with our win 79 – 68. Because of our good score we may move up a place or even two. We play the top of the league next week. Keep your fingers crossed.

  • Next match – Home – Chatsworth – 10 June – 6.30pm

Matlock Thursday Friendly League
Away – Baslow – 3 June

For once the sun shone this afternoon and to cap it all the BBC were there filming the action. Not sure when the new TV stars will appear though. Our three doubles pairs unfortunately all lost so we were behind 63 – 46. We did win four of the six singles, but the deficit we had to make up was too large and we finished down 133 – 125. Our average this year is 121 per match so even though we lost it will improve our score, albeit by only a small margin.

  • Next match – Home – Whitworth Park – 12 June – 1.45pm.

On Sunday we are playing our senior cup tournament which is always good fun. Come down to Parsons Croft and have a look in the afternoon.

Two Wins This Week

PARWICH CROWN GREEN BOWLS CLUB

Back top league matches and two very good wins this week. Nobody turned up for our first open evening on Monday night, which is a real shame. We will repeat the evening this Monday. Get off the couch and come and have a go. Its one hour out of your life!

Matlock Tuesday bowls league.
Home – Matlock Golf Club – 27 May.

We always seem to have good close games against the Golf Club and this match was no exception. We each won two games, but thankfully the ones we lost were by a smaller margin than Matlock. Edith for once sat this match out and Rick played with Tony and the pair of them won handsomely 21 – 12. Dawn and Dot also played very well winning 21 – 13. The final result gave Parwich 69, Golf Club 67. We were one place ahead of our opponents in the league. This win will keep us there.

  • Next match – Away – Bradwell – 3 June – 6.30pm.

Matlock Thursday Friendly League.
Home – Hope Works – 29 May 2014.

Hope Works are just ahead of us in the league and we needed to score well against them. Our doubles pairs played a blinder winning two out of the three games with Liz and Sue coming out on top 21 – 10. The overall score after the doubles was 56 – 49 to Parwich. For once we struggled in the singles only winning two of the six games, but our defeats were less costly. Tony A winning 15 – 3 and Dawn 15 – 7. We sneaked a win by one point in the singles and winning overall by 127 – 110. Unfortunately this points total is not enough to get us above Hope Works, but a win is a win.

  • Next match – Away – Baslow – 5 June – 1.45pm.

See you Monday night.

Win some, lose some

PARWICH CROWN GREEN BOWLS CLUB

It was a pity that more people did not go to the Parish Meeting. Perhaps we will have to drag possible members kicking and screaming to the green. Anyway one unexpected good win and one not so unsurprising loss.

Matlock Tuesday bowls league
Away – Youlgrave – 20 May

We have not played on this green for many years; they have been playing in the top division in the league. Some years ago they also put what can best be described as a ‘camels hump’ in the green. To say you need a sat nav to play on there is an understatement. The game did not start well with Dawn and Dot 11 -3 down in just a few ends. However, o ye of little faith, they came back and finished winners by 21 – 15. We won two of the other three games and came out on top by 78 – 60. Considering the trepidation with we were approaching the match, what a result. Hopefully we can start climbing up the league a bit.

  • Next match – Home – Matlock Golf Club – 27 May – 6.30pm

Matlock Thursday Friendly League
Away – Chatsworth A – 22 May 2014

We have been doing quite well in this league, winning a few and losing a few. This week was ‘losing a few’. They are top of the league and showed us no mercy. We lost two of the three doubles games, but Harry B and Ian J played really well to win 21 – 13. Despite this however, we were behind 55 – 38.
We shared the six singles three apiece with Edith providing us with a great 15 – 5 win. The final outcome was a win to Chatsworth 121 – 105. At least the rain held off!!

  • Next match – Home – Lafarge – 29 May – 1.45pm

We have the first of our ‘friendly’ games this Sunday. Ashourne Park are entertaining us. Should be good.

Even though it’s a Bank Holiday we will be on the green at around 7 o’clock on Monday. Come and have a try I dare you!!

Back on Form

PARWICH CROWN GREEN BOWLS CLUB

Thankfully we got back to winning ways, albeit by the smallest of margins in one match, but a win is a win as they say and anything was better than Christians and lions like last week.

Matlock Tuesday bowls league
Home – Whitworth Park – 13 May

As I said anything was preferable to last week’s embarrassment. We had a really good match. It was two games each, Edith and Rick producing the best score for us, as usual winning 21 – 10. Sue A and John B also scraped a win. At one point they were 15 – 5 down, but came out on top 21 – 20 and that point made all the difference as the final result was Parwich 73, Whitworth 72. Having plummeted from the giddy heights of top of the league to seventh, hopefully this win will halt the slide. It will need to as we are due to play Youlgrave on their green next week. It could be another massacre!

  • Next match – Away – Youlgrave – 20 May – 6.30pm.

Matlock Thursday Friendly League
Home – Matlock Bath – 15 May

There are some games that even if you lose you can enjoy the games and your opponents, playing Matlock Bath is one such fixture, add to that a good win as well and what more do you want out of life. After the three doubles we were 7 points behind, with Dennis E and Audrey B leading the way 21 – 11. Again our singles players did us proud winning 5 out of the six games. Tony A, Harry B, and Dawn A showing how it should be done. The score for the singles was a convincing 86 – 52 to Parwich giving an overall result of 132 to Parwich 105 to Whitworth Park. Good game equally good company.

  • Away – Chatsworth – 22 May – 1.45pm.

The village annual meeting takes place next Wednesday and the Bowls Club will be there trying to drum up new members. Come and have a word next week.

Winning Run Broken

PARWICH CROWN GREEN BOWLS CLUB

It can happen to any team, look how Manchester United have slumped! Only one league match this week, thank goodness. Heaven knows what our score would have been if we had to play twice.

Matlock Tuesday bowls league
Away – Buxton Park – 6 May

So you can’t win them all. To say we lost this week would be an injustice to Buxton. It was carnage. Edith and Rick played out of their little skins otherwise I doubt if we would have got to double figures. It really was that bad. Anyway I will not give details of the result as I do not want the information for all to see on Parwich’s worst ever result as it will scar the participants for life. WE ARE NO LONGER TOP OF THE LEAGUE!! We are at home next week. Hopefully we will be better, we certainly can’t do any worse, or can we?

  • Next match – Home – Whitworth Park – 13 May – 6.30pm.

Matlock Thursday Friendly League

No league match this week instead we played our club Square Robin competition, which is a variation of a Round Robin, but with corners (you will have to work it out for yourselves). Although the weather was unkind to us towards the end of the contest, it was a very good afternoon and two new names will appear on the trophy, Tony A and John B. Next week back to the league.

  • Home – Matlock Bath – 15 May – 1.45pm.

On Sunday we are due to play another Club competition, the Open Singles. The fun starts at 2.00pm. Why not come down and join us.

John B.
