Oil co-operative: an update from Debbie.

Hi all,

I have been ringing around the oil companies today trying to find out about minimum orders, discounts to be expected on orders, etc.

Doing a percentage discount based on size of order (my preferred method of discount) doesn’t seem to be an option so far – although I’m still ringing around. It would seem one is always going to have to ring around on the day before delivery to find out the price.

It seems to me that to obtain the biggest discount possible, we need to match like with like on the oil tank front. We probably need two co-ops rather than one.

People with tanks that are 6 wheel tank accessible and need to buy at least 500 litres minimum would be a good match on one co-op front.

People who have tanks with restricted access (ie are accessible only by a 4 wheel rather than 6 wheel vehicle) and/or need order less than 500 litres of oil would be a good match for another co-op.

The reason for this is the discount is based on delivering the most fuel in as few stops or ‘drops’ as possible. The cost to the oil company is not simply bringing the oil from the depot to the village, but every single stop takes time and therefore adds to the cost. So even if you have an accessible tank, if you only need 300 or 400 litres of fuel, you are adding a drop. If we get a co-op order of 10,000 or 15,000 litres, but there are 17 drops, we are not going to get any discount at all!

Another problem that has arisen in the past is that people say they need 500 litres, but don’t really – they perhaps need only 300 litres. So then the tanker has to go back to the depot with fuel still on board, and if that tanker needs to fill up with diesel for truckers or something, the whole thing needs to be emptied. That is why it is better for the smaller orders to all go together, rather than tacked on to the bigger orders.

The biggest discount is going to go deliveries of 10,000+ litres in 10 or less drops. You’ll probably save roughly 2p per litre, maybe a bit more or a bit less, depending on how far we can wear them down!

People who have 500 or less litres of oil delivered pay significantly more for their oil. The price for having 500 litres from Halso was £41.90 per litre vs £39.90 for 1,000 litres. This is before any discount.

So you can see why people with larger tanks going together, and people with smaller tanks going together makes bargaining with the oil companies easier, because you are comparing like with like.

I’m still getting information together, but thought it was worth updating everyone on what I had learnt so far.

I do need to order oil, and I would be interested to hear from people who do not have restricted access and need at least 500 litres of oil.

I may be giving out information that people already know – so sorry about that if I’m preaching to the converted – it was all new to me. Also, if you know anyone who is interested in the co-op but not online, please pass the message on to them.

– Debbie W.

LATEST UPDATE: For comparative prices, useful phone numbers and an offer to start an ordering group for anyone ordering 900+ litres at a time (with no access issues), please see these further comments from Debbie.

Possible oil buying co-op

Updated 2nd Feb: Since posting the information below, Karen Carpenter has offered to ring round different Oil Suppliers to get an overview of how various companies would work with local syndicates.  Rather than having only one company attending the meeting, Peak Oil will be asked for their ideas, but not invited to the meeting.

A Peak Oil representative has asked Karen Carpenter (Derbyshire Dales District Council) if he could attend the open meeting at the Sycamore Inn on Thursday 11th Feb.  She contacted me as the only member of the Blog Team whose phone number she had.  We both felt that he may have useful information to share, but obviously it is essential that any co-op is not tied to any specific company.  Consequently he will be offered a slot near the start of the meeting but will be asked to leave for the main discussion.

However, if anyone else has strong views on a company rep. attending the meeting please leave a comment, contact Karen Carpenter or email parwich@hotmail.co.uk.

Proposed Oil Co-op

Given the interest in setting up an oil buying co-op to ensure the cheapest prices, Karen Carpenter (Derbyshire Dales District Council) suggests she meets with a community representative or interested people:

I think if there is sufficient interest, then would you like to have a community meeting to discuss how the community would like a co-op to run, as a number of volunteers will be needed to co-ordinate ordering of oil and passing the message to all members of the co-op. I think the website will be a useful way of getting the message out, but I don’t wish to exclude people who don’t have access to the internet, so it will be important to have a way of reaching all the community. Where would it be best to have a meeting with those who are interested? I am happy to come out in the evening so more people will be available. I just need to make sure my husband is available to look after our children when setting the date. Alternatively I can come and meet with a representative of the community if that is what you would prefer.

We have suggested Karen comes to a meeting of everyone wanting to be involved in either the Pub or the Church. (Updated 12/1/10) This is provisionally arranged for 7-30pm Thursday 11th February at the Sycamore Inn; Karen is emailing a poster the Blog and Parish Council so we can put it in the Church Magazine, and get notices up.

Several people have also asked to set up a parallel LPG co-op, so LPG users come along to the meeting as well.

Anyone need oil now!

This email has just come in from Keeley & Andrew at Parwich Lees Cottage
I understand that there are now more people interested in setting up a more formal oil co-op. Whilst this is being looked at, we need to order oil again.  We’ll probably be placing the order early next week, so again if anyone else wants to join in we can get a more competitive price.

Please either email parwich@hotmail.co.uk with your contact details and these will be passed onto Keeley or add your details to the comments.

Over the last year individuals have put posts on the Blog when they are ordering oil to get others to order at the same time ensuring discounted prices.  Today the District Council has contacted us to see if there is any interest in us taking this further:

Dear Parwich Community,

My name is Karen Carpenter and I work for Derbyshire Dales District Council. Part of my work involves helping local communities with keeping warm and as part of this I would like to help a small number of villages by assisting them to set up Oil Co-ops.

The benefit of having an Oil Co-op is that discounts in fuel purchases can often be obtained by buying in bulk as a group. Better prices are often obtained (per litre of fuel) for larger orders. In addition, the tanker will need to make less visits to the village thereby, having an environmental benefit also.

Oil prices have been extremely volatile recently, and living in the Derbyshire Dales oil prices are often a little higher than elsewhere, so any reductions must be a good thing. If you are interested please get in touch, I can be contacted at work on 01629 761316, or e-mailed at karen.carpenter@derbyshiredales.gov.uk, my normal working days are Monday to Wednesday. My work mobile number is 07775931037.

Hope to hear from you.

Anyone ordering oil?

Keeley B of Parwich (or are you technically Eaton & Alsop?) is about to place an order for oil (domestic) so if anyone wants to order at the same time in order to get a bulk delivery discount, please contact Keeley.

(Emails to parwich@hotmail.co.uk will be forwarded for those that have not already met Keeley.  Also parwich.org would like to say a belated welcome to the three Parishes.)

Local heating oil companies

I am probably the only person to be ordering heating oil in this heatwave. After paying over the odds last time, I decided to shop around this time and thought I would leave a list of oil company numbers on the blog for anyone else who’d like to shop around now or when it gets cold again (tomorrow perhaps). Today, EMO and Stoddards were the cheapest and CPL and Halso the most expensive but I guess that changes each time you call.

Where do you buy your heating oil?

Just after filling my oil tank a while back, I had two very irritating conversations.  One with Nia, who said that her man in Leek charges 5p per litre less then Halso and Peak Oil.  And one with Jane B who said that, whenever they are quoted a price per litre by Halso or Peak Oil, they always haggle and get a reduction.  I felt I had paid over the odds.

So, please tell me – where do you get your oil?  Does anyone have a cheap(er) supplier?  Do you always shop around and, if so, who tends to be cheaper?  Do you always haggle and get the pence-per-litre price knocked down and, if so, by how much?  Who has had the price reduced by the most?  If you get a good price next time you buy, put it on the blog so we can all jump on the bandwagon and get hold of some cheaper oil.  This information would be useful for everyone in the village who heats their house and water with oil.
