The sun was certainly shining on Parwich during Sunday afternoon with 500 (yes 500) visitors travelling from near and far, including California, to enjoy Open Gardens 2024.
The village looked amazing and on behalf of the whole PDHS committee, a huge THANK YOU goes out to everyone who worked so hard and in so many different ways to make it one of our most successful events in recent years. Whether behind the scenes ahead of opening time, those volunteering on the day and everyone who supported it by taking family and friends on a tour of our lovingly tended gardens. Plant sales were buoyant and we even catered for a wedding party of 24 who arrived on spec to enjoy a cream tea before these sold out.
Final receipts are still to be confirmed but we shall, as always, be looking to share funds among other village clubs and organisations at the next AGM.
Our thanks again and do enjoy looking at John Lord’s stunning collection of photos. Here’s a taster:

By Mark J.
One of our band of supporters brought to my attention last night that it had been some while since I’d donned my Reporter’s Hat.
Maybe, by way of an excuse, I could offer that the profusion of headgear we’d been forced to wear over recent weeks had caused that confusion. Cranial protection has had to include the stormproof, the sunproof, the hailproof and the mere mistproof. There were Boaters at Baslow, Toppers at Tideswell, Mitres at Matlock and Chupallas at Chatsworth There were Whoopees at Wirksworth and Beanies at Bakewell.
Tuesday millinery choices have proved rather successful of late. We currently sit 2nd in the table at what is now the halfway point of the season with a record of five wins out of nine, including no less than three maximum point victories. Most of these though have been at home, as the only recent success on the road to date was a very pleasing conquest at Wirksworth. If we can maintain this current form into the second half – and I see no reason why this shouldn’t be the case – then surely we’ll be well placed to take the plaudits of promotion come the 20th August. There have been blips along the way: arriving at a somewhat waterlogged Matlock Bath, “Pitch Inspections” indicated the game should have been off, but discussion between captains concluded that as everyone had travelled we’d give it a go. An enjoyable encounter, but we didn’t adapt to conditions as well as our opponents. We were once again humbled on the North Face of the slope of Youlgrave this week, but stand the chance of a speedy revenge this Tuesday as a quirk of the fixtures list dictates that they visit us in the return fixture. Things are looking good!
Thursdays have not seen such joyful outcomes. Though not for the want of trying one win in ten with only eight to play sees us still effectively rooted at the foot of the table and even the most optimistic of us must start to wonder if our position in the top flight can be assured at the end of the campaign. The win when it did come, though, was worth all the heartache. A magnificent home victory saw us wear the Crown against our old friends from Wirksworth was, it must be noted, heralded with the appearance of the bunting throughout the streets of Parwich.
But we’ll press on. We won’t give up. We’ll battle in good-natured combat with our friends from throughout the Peaks, and whilst writing this I’ve suddenly realised where things have been going wrong….
….We need to be wearing our Bowler hats!

I wanted to just say a big thank you to two unsung heroes of Wakes who without fail every year put up the bunting and are always on hand to help us when we need it. Even at 21 + years these two men are amazing in what they can do. I’ve tried to persuade them to take on an apprentice! So thank you Roy M and Roger C you are very much appreciated.

Owing to unforeseen circumstances we have had to cancel tonight’s Film Show
Sorry for the disappointment. Martin C

A 1920s English seaside town bears witness to a dark, absurd scandal in this riotous mystery comedy. Based on a stranger-than-fiction true story, “Wicked Little Letters” follows two neighbours: deeply-conservative local Edith Swan (Olivia Colman) and rowdy Irish migrant Rose Gooding (Jessie Buckley). When Edith and fellow residents start to receive wicked letters full of unintentionally hilarious profanities, foul-mouthed Rose is charged with the crime. The anonymous letters prompt a national uproar, and a trial ensues. However, as the town’s women, led by Police Officer Gladys Moss (Anjana Vasan), begin to investigate the crime themselves, they suspect that something is amiss and Rose might not be the culprit after all.
Independent**** Olivia Colman hurling expletives is enough to sustain this witty true-life comedy

If you’d like a way to reuse any cardboard boxes and other packaging that is headed for the blue bin, you might consider dropping them off in Tissington.
Annie at the candleshop On a Wick and a Prayer regularly reuses unwanted bubble wrap, tissue paper and those curled cornstarch bits (that look like a type of crisp!) in the orders she sends out by post. She can also make her own packaging from pre-used cardboard using the nifty machine in the photo.
Mairi at Tissington Plant Nursery can also make good use of your small and medium boxes for her customers.
As I regularly go over to Tissington I am happy to take unwanted packaging. Please check first on 334, just in case I’m inundated.
Or pop over and see their wonderful plants and candles at the same time.
Sue H
