I saw this in the garden and thought that the colours of the spider were lovely – is it a common orb weaver?

It is definitely an orb weaver, but the orb weavers are a very diverse group, characterised by their cartwheel type webs.
This one is most likely a female cross orb weaver (Araneus diadematus). The females are the ones that build the webs, where they sit face down waiting for prey – including the unfortunate, smaller males!
