Olympics buzz inspires Dales Summer Street Games
With the London Olympics creating a buzz throughout the country, Derbyshire Dales District Council has re-launched a range of summer holiday sporting activities for local youngsters.
StreetGames, a Safer Communities through Sport project, offers ‘doorstep’ sport to young people, helping to increase youth participation in sport, prevent youth crime and create volunteering opportunities.
All sessions are funded externally at no cost to Derbyshire Dales Council Tax payers and StreetGames for local young people are being staged by fully qualified coaches weekly across the Dales.
Here’s the Summer 2012 Street Games programme:
- Ashbourne (Clifton Road Multi Use Games Area) – Thursdays 5.00pm to 6.00pm
- Matlock (Helicopter Park, Hurst Farm) – Tuesdays 6.00pm to 7.00pm (11+ years)
- Middleton-by-Wirksworth (Village Hall and playing fields) Thursdays 7.00pm to 9pm (8+ years)
- Tansley (Fete Field, Spout Lane) Wednesdays 4.00pm to 6.00pm (8+ years)
- Wirksworth (Anthony Gell School Fields) – Fridays 7.00pm to 8.30pm (11+ years)
The early sessions offer multi sports and are open to all ages and abilities. The later sessions are generally aimed at teenagers.
All the sessions now carry the InspireMark logo and include a range of Olympic style activities as well as traditional sports after the Derbyshire Dales StreetGames initiative linked in with the London 2012 Olympics.
Last year a total of 441 attendances were recorded at 35 weekly Street Games sessions delivered over the summer holidays.
District Council Leader Councillor Lewis Rose OBE, who is also Chairman of the Safer Derbyshire Dales Community Safety Partnership, said: “The Olympic Torch Relay and now the Games themselves have clearly caught people’s imagination and after last year’s successful programme I am really pleased the District Council is again offering healthy activity that helps keep our towns and villages safe and attractive
“Local people tell us how important safe and healthy communities are to them, so StreetGames is something we are proud to promote as it helps to maintain the Derbyshire Dales’ status as one of the safest places in the UK by giving our young people something interesting to do.”
Derbyshire Dales District Council’s Youth Sport Development Officer Marie Widerman said: “The StreetGames project is a success because it engages with an especially hard-to-reach community, offering regular free weekly sports sessions to young people and families.”
