I passed David’s post about the unseasonably early sighting of the Hummingbird Hawk-moth to Ken Orpe who is the Derbyshire coordinator for the B&MC org, Butterfly (and Moths) Conservation. Ken collates the butterfly recordings taken by some 300-400 Derbyshire volunteers, between April – Sept, which help shape the stats for national records. Ken’s response: “ Wow a great sighting …. David – it could have over-wintered here in Derbyshire but more likely to have arrived on the southerly breeze – there have been Painted Lady butterflies seen already in Somerset this month”. These two species migrate from North Africa or Southern Europe and make the most of southerly winds to hop over the Channel. However, it is now more common that they are overwintering here in the UK. A small sign of global warming?
