After taking a year’s break in 2009, Parwich’s annual horticultural show returned in fine style on Sunday, with another stunning display of local vegetables, fruits, flowers, pot plants, cakes, loafs, flans, biscuits, jams, chutneys, eggs and other assorted goodies.
Three excellent new categories were introduced this year, two of them (the trifles and the sculptures made from bar snacks) being specifically designed to showcase the skills of Parwich’s menfolk. There were also plenty of entries in the horticultural photography competition, which saw the memorial hall’s brand new display boards being put to use for the first time. Thanks are due to the organisers of the Parwich Panoramic Five, for raising most of the funding for these new boards.
Prize giving took place at 3pm, with Jo Larkin presenting the winners with their trophies. Full results will follow shortly. The day then concluded with the traditional auction of produce, as officiated by Robert Bunting.
Many thanks to the Horticultural Society, for organising such a well-run and popular event.

This just looks fantastic – so sorry to have missed this (family engagement!!). Congratulations to the Horticultural Society on such a triumph – beautiful produce in beautiful surroundings. I particularly like the Angel of the North in what look like twiglets – Gormley would be so proud.
Can I please say a big thank you to the Horticultural Society for their hard work, and also to all who contributed. The Websters had an amazing meal this evening: tomatoes with basil, grilled squash, strawberry pie…and quiche for dinner tomorrow! Nice!
Ben Bennett’s prizewinning bread and also a prizewinning jam (not sure who’s) was eagerly devoured by the Beasleys, the Chambers and the Jewitts for mid afternoon tea.
…and Laura’s prize-winning Victoria sponge was equally eagerly devoured, by various visitors on Sunday and co-workers on Monday. Truly scrumptious!
I think next year the boy’s challenge should be to make a sculpture out of a marrow.
And the cooking challenge should be to make a dish using a marrow.
To who ever made the beetroot chutney I got in the auction, it is the tastiest chutney I have had in a good few years.
