Well, it’s the final episode in the two week(ish) saga of Team PB. What heights they scaled!
If you recall, three members of Team PB were in the main draw for the prestigious Greenaway Trophy: the ‘Blue Ribbon’ event of the whole games. 52 competitors had assembled in Wirksworth, with Rick Manning and John Barnett acting as pace makers for Team PB’s star gold-winning player from last Sunday, Ian Johnston.
The competition went well for the first round, with all three getting through. Unfortunately, John was then knocked out in the second round. Rick managed to keep going until the quarter final, but again he was beaten.
This left Ian on his own, carrying the flag. He would have liked it to have been the Cross of St Andrew, being the brave Scot that he is, but he had to settle for a mythical Union flag.
Battling away on his own now, with no Team PB members around him, Ian finally succumbed to defeat in the semi-final. What a journey it had been!
So, no fairytale finish for Team PB… but then there is always next year.
Oh, and the Greenaway Charity finished off well over a thousand pounds to the good. Best result of all. really.
Back to the grind of Matlock League Bowls next week.
