Now, this unlikely team will put it all on the line and embark on an upstream journey of faith and fish to prove the impossible, possible.

The acclaimed wildlife artist Esther Tyson is staging an exhibition of recent work in our stunning modern Memorial Hall. Esther lives in Parwich, and the exhibition presents an opportunity for the local community to see her work, as well as serious collectors of wildlife art.

Esther studied at Carlisle College of Art and the prestigious Royal College of Art. She has exhibited in galleries in London and all over the country. She has also received many accolades and awards for her work.

Esther is renowned for work that reflects her intense passion for lengthy study of wild life in its natural habitat. The work she produces evokes a powerful image of the very essence that she experiences in her observations. The exhibition will feature a wide variety of her work, from her local Derbyshire countryside to the mountains of Nepal and recent underwater studies in Dorset.

The exhibition takes place in Parwich Memorial Hall on Saturday 17th and Sunday 18th November 2012, from 10am to 4pm. Admission is free, and all are welcome!

Science in the Park

Find out about Science in the National Park
There’s a whole world of scientific activity going on in the Peak District National Park – and people can explore it at two family-focused exhibitions in November. The first ever ‘Science in the National Park’ events take place on:·Saturday Nov 3 at the Moorland Discovery Centre, Longshaw, 10.30am-4pm

· Saturday Nov 10 at Bakewell Town Hall, 10.30am-4pm.

Both are free and will include fun activities for children (outside if fine), free refreshments, and displays of a wide range of scientific projects including:

·        How archaeologists uncovered 2,000-year-old skeletons at Fin Cop hillfort

·        Why biologists are tracking northern hairy wood ants with tiny radio antennae

·        How ecologists are conserving rare native crayfish and adders

·        Why conservationists are flying in sphagnum moss to help restore barren moorland

Evie’s Artistic Afternoons

Paul B writes:

Come on, let’s have you… it’s time to get your sticky-back plastic & Fairy Liquid bottles at the ready and get creative at Evie’s artistic afternoons at the Memorial hall from 3.30pm to 5.30pm on Thursday afternoons

…or if you’d just like some company and a chinwag with a cuppa and bickies, come along and see whats cracking off.

The first one was enjoyed by all who attended. A contribution towards the hire charges is £3.00-ish, but will get less as more people attend.

You might discover a hidden talent, who knows? Be there or be square.

The Chimes Cafe in Ashbourne has started running regular stand-up comedy nights, and the next show takes place this Thursday (October 4th) at 8pm. Admittance is £6, and you are encouraged to come earlier and book a pre-show meal.

Thursday’s headliner is Chris Stokes, whose debut show won an award at this year’s Leicester Comedy Festival. Chris has supported Milton Jones on tour, and The Scotsman has described him as “hilarious”.

Also appearing:

  • Scott Bennett, “one of the Midlands’ brightest rising stars”, who won Comedy Cellar Best New Act 2011 and Old Speckled Hen Comedian Of the Year 2010.
  • James Hately, “a weird and wonderful performer with a spindly ‘pythonesque’ figure and a dazzling imagination”, who “makes use of surreal logic and imagery to bring a magical quality to the everyday.”
  • Rob Kemp, “a rising star from Wolverhampton.”
  • Bruce Edhouse, “who may well be talking about aubergines… “

The evening is compered by Alan Seaman, who has won praise from Isy Suttie, of Channel 4’s Peep Show: “Alan always makes sure there’s a wide variety of acts and a warm and friendly atmosphere where audiences get value for money. They are always a joy to do.”

Chimes Cafe is at 48 St John Street Ashbourne, DE6 1GH.
Telephone 01335 300220, or reserve via shipoffoolscomedy@yahoo.co.uk (email) / 079 414 71648 (text).

The DRCS (Derwent Rural Counselling Service) Annual Shopping Fair takes place this week at the Maynard, Grindleford, on the evening of Wednesday 3rd October (6pm-8pm, with sparkling wine and canapés) and all day on Thursday 4th October (10am-4pm)

Parwich’s Marion F-S has a close involvement with this local, Bakewell-based charity. Marion says:

“I’m not allowed to mention the ‘C’ word yet, but it is a great opportunity to stock up with fun, unusual and reasonably priced personal gifts for family and friends, or even for oneself!”

“Some favourite stalls will be back, and lots of exciting new ones. There will also be the usual extremely popular homemade cakes and goodies stall…!”

If anyone wants to be sure of a ticket for the Wednesday evening event, they can call Marion on 519.

Please click the flyer to view the full invitation.
