Pilates – Thank You

A big thank you to all who came along to my first (ever) pilates  class – as teacher!  Despite some nerves I managed the whole routine,  with  two minor errors, which you were all kind enough to ignore.  I  enjoyed the experience and I hope you did too.  Hopefully I will see you regularly over the next six weeks.
Many thanks Sue

Pilates for Parwich

In this week’s Ashbourne News Telegraph, there’s a feature on the work of “Parwich Fit 4 All”. Here’s a copy of their original press release.

Parwich Fit 4 All are celebrating a grant of £500 from the John Weston Fund, administered by Derbyshire Community Foundation, to help subsidise Pilates exercise classes in the village.

For many years there has been a self-funding adult Pilates class and the participants were keen to extend the benefits to the younger and older residents of the village. Parwich Fit 4 All was established last year to apply for funding to subsidise classes for 11-18 year olds and Over 60’s.

Initial donations came from the Parwich and District Horticultural Society, Parwich United Charities and a grant from the Derbyshire Dales CVS Health Development Fund. The John Weston grant, together with a private donation, will enable the classes to run for the rest of the year.

The teachers are both trained by the Pilates Foundation UK. Georgie Barnes, who teaches the teenagers, specialises in equine and sports specific Pilates. ‘ I really enjoy teaching the kids Pilates, helping them to obtain better propreception and core stability, relating to their specific sports’ Georgie says.

Tricia Durdey, the Over 60’s teacher, runs classes in Ashbourne and Wirksworth and has considerable experience of teaching older people and running ‘Falls prevention’ classes. She says ‘I love working with my group of women. They are so enthusiastic and work very hard to improve strength, posture and fitness. I noticed a difference after only a month of working together. I know many of them feel the benefits too – from increased mobility, physical confidence and balance, to diminishing ‘bingo wings’!

After their class, the Over 60’s enjoy a chat over tea and cake provided by Val Kirkham of Catering4Parwich.

Pilates time change on 25th May

For 25th May only, the children’s class will take place at 6.30pm and the adults at 7.30pm.

This is because six adults are going on the Horticultural trip that day and will not be back in time for the earlier class.

All those who were at this Wednesday’s classes were consulted. Apologies if you were absent and this does not suit you.

We have the received the following excellent news from Rebecca B:

We have got our grant!  and this together with the donations from the Horticultural Society and Parwich United Charities means we can now go ahead with our Over 6Os exercise class. The first class will take place  on Wednesday 2nd February at 2pm, followed by refreshments at 2.45pm. That class and the one the following week will be free taster classes, although a donation of £1 towards the refreshments would be appreciated. Thereafter the cost will be £4 per session to include the refreshments. Unlike the evening classes where we pay up front for a block of classes, the charge for these classes will be payable per session only if you can attend that class. The teacher Tricia Durdey would like all participants to fill in a health form, which will be delivered to all who have expressed an interest. Forms can also be filled in at the class on the 2nd and there will be an opportunity to talk to Tricia if you have any particular health concerns about exercising.

Parwich Fit 4 All – Pilates

Rebecca J writes:

We have now received two very generous donations from the Horticultural Society and Parwich United Charities, and we are awaiting the outcome of a grant application to the Derbyshire Dales Health Development fund.

As a result, we can start to subsidise the 11-18 year olds classes; the cost will be halved to £2.50 for all young people who live in the parish of Parwich.

The start of the over 60’s class will need to await the outcome of the grant application, which I am told will be decided some time in the week beginning the 17th January. I am fairly confident we will get some, if not all of the money, applied for.

Due to other committments, the teacher (Tricia Durdey) has asked if we can start in February – so can all those who are interested pencil in Wednesday 2nd February for the first class and keep their fingers crossed! So far we have eight people interested and room for another four – so please let me know (318) if you haven’t already filled out a form, or told Sandra or Ann.

Rebecca J writes: We are in the process of applying for a grant to run Pilates classes for the Over 60s in the New Year. We hope to have 2 free taster classes and 10 more that are subsidized. They will take place on a Wednesday afternoon from 2pm – 2.45pm, in the Memorial hall, followed by tea and cakes provided by Val Kirkham. The cost should be in the region of £3/ £4.

The teacher is Tricia Durdey who has 30 years experience of teaching movement to people of all ages and abilities; the last 6 of those as a Pilates teacher. She has worked with people with disabilities and with older adults in care homes and run a number of ‘Falls prevention’ classes.

She says:

“I want people to enjoy moving, to feel comfortable in their bodies, and to move without pain. Pilates should help you to become stronger and more flexible, and improve balance, posture, gait, and breathing.

My Pilates classes for older adults will mostly be devised around exercises that can be done sitting on a chair, or standing with the support of a chair. When people become stronger, or if people are already confident, I will also teach floor-based exercises. The classes will be particularly tailored to suit people’s individual needs.”

The class will be limited to 12 people and we need to have an idea of numbers to make a successful grant application. Please contact Rebecca on 390318 to reserve a place. This information will be available with a reply slip at the Over 60s meal this week.

New “Fit 4 All” Group

Parwich Fit 4 All!

A new village group was formed the other night to encourage exercise, health and well-being in Parwich. Our immediate aims are to increase access to Pilates classes. We are applying for 2 grants; one to subsidize the existing class for young people and encourage more to join in and the second to set up exercise sessions for the over 60s.

For this, we hope to get a grant to run a chair based afternoon exercise class in the Memorial Hall in the New Year. There would be about ¾ hour of gentle exercise followed by refreshments. The first two classes would be free and a further 10 would be subsidized.

We are intending to contact directly those who may be interested in attending. However, if you or any of your friends or relatives might be interested it would be really helpful for us to have an early idea of numbers for when we make our grant application. Please contact Ann Whitfield, Rebecca Jordan, Sue Purvis, Sandra Chadfield or Val Kirkham.

Any donations to start off our new bank account would be most appreciated!
