Lent Lunch tomorrow

Pop along to Town Head (Rosemary & Stuart’s house) at 12.30-2pm for Lent lunch tomorrow.  Enjoy a range of cheeses, bread and soup – more fun than making your own lunch.  You don’t have to be a member of the Church to enjoy this lunch – it is a community event to raise funds for Church repairs (via a donation for the lunch) – afterall we like seeing the Church in our village, so let’s help keep it in good repair.  Everyone is very welcome, including children.

Next Lent Lunch will be on Wednesday 24th March at the Vicarage.

New Year’s Day Get Together

Why not pop along to Church sometime tomorrow between 11am and early pm,  for a few minutes or a couple of hours.   A chance to catch up on the New Year’s news and gossip with some delightful music playing in the background.   If you have any food or drink that you want to use up, (the diet regime starts  tomorrow – so it’s a good chance to remove all that wicked temptation) bring it along and share with others.  If your cupboards are bare, then pop along for a bite in exchange for a donation to help the Church.

There is a wonderful display of Christmas trees in the Church, decorated by the different societies, groups and individuals in the village.  An enormous amount of effort has gone into this and if you haven’t already been in to have a look, please do.

Remember it is the Crib Service on Thursday at 4pm, everyone is extremely welcome.

Simon our postman will be doing his round for the last time on 2nd January after 11 years delivering the post to the people of Parwich. We could not have wished for a more dedicated and helpful person to deliver our mail. Through rain, snow and shine, Simon has always looked after us with a smile and a wave. We will be very sorry to see him go.

It was wonderful therefore to have the opportunity this afternoon to thank him and his wife Barbara.

After The Gold Rush.

Thanks to Kevin S. for the following report.

NOTE: There are a couple of videos of Saturday night’s screening – complete with live organ accompaniment and audience laughter! – at the end of this post. Click “Continue Reading” to access them.

The number of cars parked around the green suggested that something very different and special was awaiting us, as we walked to St Peter’s last night to watch The Gold Rush, with organ accompaniment by Christopher Harrison. There were plenty of familiar faces sitting in the pews, but there were very many new faces too. It soon became apparent that the plethora of enthusiastic visitors had come from film clubs around Derbyshire, having heard about last night’s unique event.

The rapturous applause for Christopher’s accompaniment on organ and piano, and for the sound effects created by Martin and Arnold, were clear testament to a remarkable evening. What’s more, over £200 was raised for the church restoration fund.

The atmosphere of the darkened church, the excellent silent film and Christopher’s witty organ playing combined to magical effect. Oh, and there were great nibbles (from local cooks) and wine (courtesy of Waitrose) during the interval too.

gold rush

Charles Chaplin made The Gold Rush (1925) out of the most unlikely sources for comedy. The idea came to him when he was viewing pictures of the 1896 Klondike gold rush, and was struck by the image of an endless line of prospectors snaking up the Chilkoot Pass, the gateway to the gold fields. Christmas Tree Festival

christmas-treeBack by popular demand is the annual Christmas Tree Festival.  This year it is being held over the weekend of the 12th & 13th December to help raise funds for the Church restoration.  There is no doubt that the presence of all these decorated trees really creates a magical atmosphere all over the Christmas period.

So, the festival is happening.  What is needed now are different groups to volunteer to dress a tree.  So far 4 out of 12 trees have been taken, so the others are up for grabs.  It could be a society, a street or just a group of friends that want to get together to do this.  Do let Andrew R (202) know if you would like to join in.   There is no theme so you can choose your own and be as imaginative as you wish.

Wonderful Harvest Service & Lunch

harvest-lunch 2Today we were able to enjoy a super harvest service held at St Peter’s with the Methodist Church and led by Andrew. It was lovely to see the church so beautifully decorated. The flowers from Cassie & Dan’s wedding formed the backdrop for the array of donated fruits and vegetables, with additional flowers complementing the harvest theme – thanks to all those who spent yesterday decorating and organising the church for today.

The service was followed by a short break, whilst lunch was organised, providing an opportunity to catch up on news from around the parish. Enormous thanks must go to Val for her generosity in providing the chicken casserole lunch and to those that baked the delicious cakes.  The annual auction followed, with Denis in control encouraging all to raise their bids.

Approximately £130 was taken during the collection, this will go to the Disasters Emergency Committee  who are providing support for the three recent disasters in East Asia.  The £310 raised from the lunch and auction will go to the Mothers Union East African appeal in Kenya.
