Thanks to Shura Prince for contacting us with the following information:

My name is Shura Prince. I live at Alsop Moor, and I am doing a charity coffee morning on Saturday the 5th December at Alstonefield Village Hall, from 10am till 1pm.

There will be a Santa’s Grotto, face painting, tombola and a variety of stalls. All money raised is going to PACT (Parents Association for Children with Tumours and Leukaemia).

This is a charity close to my heart, as my daughter Evie had leukaemia when she was 6 weeks old. She is now 6 and is doing well. So I just want to give back something to the charity that helped me and my family through a tough time.

Ball Race

This afternoon saw the Ball Race to raise funds for next year’s St George’s Day Parade and associated festivities.

The rain stopped and the sun came out just at the right time.  Some 500 balls were raced down Pump Hill, with the first three winning their owners prizes.  Then all adjourned to the Legion for a barbecue.  For more photos    (more…)

After The Gold Rush.

Thanks to Kevin S. for the following report.

NOTE: There are a couple of videos of Saturday night’s screening – complete with live organ accompaniment and audience laughter! – at the end of this post. Click “Continue Reading” to access them.

The number of cars parked around the green suggested that something very different and special was awaiting us, as we walked to St Peter’s last night to watch The Gold Rush, with organ accompaniment by Christopher Harrison. There were plenty of familiar faces sitting in the pews, but there were very many new faces too. It soon became apparent that the plethora of enthusiastic visitors had come from film clubs around Derbyshire, having heard about last night’s unique event.

The rapturous applause for Christopher’s accompaniment on organ and piano, and for the sound effects created by Martin and Arnold, were clear testament to a remarkable evening. What’s more, over £200 was raised for the church restoration fund.

The atmosphere of the darkened church, the excellent silent film and Christopher’s witty organ playing combined to magical effect. Oh, and there were great nibbles (from local cooks) and wine (courtesy of Waitrose) during the interval too.

Christmas Tree Festival

christmas-treeBack by popular demand is the annual Christmas Tree Festival.  This year it is being held over the weekend of the 12th & 13th December to help raise funds for the Church restoration.  There is no doubt that the presence of all these decorated trees really creates a magical atmosphere all over the Christmas period.

So, the festival is happening.  What is needed now are different groups to volunteer to dress a tree.  So far 4 out of 12 trees have been taken, so the others are up for grabs.  It could be a society, a street or just a group of friends that want to get together to do this.  Do let Andrew R (202) know if you would like to join in.   There is no theme so you can choose your own and be as imaginative as you wish.

Martin C writes:

We had a very successful evening. With an audience of over 110, we raised over £500. £100 will go to St Peter’s Choir in Nottingham (who are raising funds to build a new organ
for their church), and the rest will go to the Parwich St. Peter’s Restoration Fund.

Patti B writes:

This really was a very enjoyable evening. We are very lucky to have had such excellent musicians and choristers in our tiny village. If they had been performing in London, we would have had to pay a small fortune for tickets. As it was, our tickets even covered a glass of wine and nibbles. Thank you to everyone that organised and helped.

Plinthtastic!

Our very own blogmeister Mike A has just had his 60 minutes of fame on the famous 4th plinth at Trafalgar Square. The opportunity was provided by Antony Gormley’s One and Other Project, which puts the people of the UK in a place normally reserved for statues of kings and generals. Mike’s performance can be seen by clicking here.

Mike Plinth 1

To the uninitiated, it may look like Mike is jigging around aimlessly. For those in the know, the performance is transformed with a wonderful soundtrack. You can dance along with Mike by clicking here and pressing the ‘play’ button at the exact moment Mike says “Go!”. You can see random people in the crowd dancing – they’ve downloaded the soundtrack onto their mp3 players and are grooving along with Mike.

Good on you Mike – wot a dancefest!
