Christmas Tree Festival

Back by popular demand is the annual Christmas Tree Festival. This year it is being held over the weekend of the 12th & 13th December to help raise funds for the Church restoration. There is no doubt that the presence of all these decorated trees really creates a magical atmosphere all over the Christmas period.
So, the festival is happening. What is needed now are different groups to volunteer to dress a tree. So far 4 out of 12 trees have been taken, so the others are up for grabs. It could be a society, a street or just a group of friends that want to get together to do this. Do let Andrew R (202) know if you would like to join in. There is no theme so you can choose your own and be as imaginative as you wish.

Zum is a blend of violin,cello & accordion; playing ‘Nuevo Tango’ masterpieces from the golden era of tango, alongside traditional gypsy melodies as well as music written by violinist Adam Summerhays. All members of the group are well known classic musicians; with Adam (from Carsington) playing and directing the London Concertante, one of the UK’s busiest chamber orchestras.

We had a very successful evening. With an audience of over 110, we raised over £500. £100 will go to St Peter’s Choir in Nottingham (who are raising funds to build a new organ
for their church), and the rest will go to the Parwich St. Peter’s Restoration Fund.

This really was a very enjoyable evening. We are very lucky to have had such excellent musicians and choristers in our tiny village. If they had been performing in London, we would have had to pay a small fortune for tickets. As it was, our tickets even covered a glass of wine and nibbles. Thank you to everyone that organised and helped.

Our very own blogmeister Mike A has just had his 60 minutes of fame on the famous 4th plinth at Trafalgar Square. The opportunity was provided by Antony Gormley’s One and Other Project, which puts the people of the UK in a place normally reserved for statues of kings and generals. Mike’s performance can be seen by clicking here.
To the uninitiated, it may look like Mike is jigging around aimlessly. For those in the know, the performance is transformed with a wonderful soundtrack. You can dance along with Mike by clicking here and pressing the ‘play’ button at the exact moment Mike says “Go!”. You can see random people in the crowd dancing – they’ve downloaded the soundtrack onto their mp3 players and are grooving along with Mike.

Coffee at Mandy’s – 23 September – 11am til 1pm

All are welcome to come to coffee at Mandy’s house – 3 Rathbone Croft – on Wednesday 23 September from 11am til 1pm. Mandy is raising money for Children’s Hospices UK. The coffee morning is part of a nationwide event organised by Phoenix called the Butterfly Tea Party which is aiming to raise £25,000 for Children’s Hospices. Phoenix cards will be on sale – if you cannot come on the morning but wish to support this event, please feel free to contact Mandy (778) to place an order with Phoenix.

Saturday, 3rd October 2009, 7:30 PM at Theatre at the URC, Tideswell An Evening with Gordon Giltrap presented by Gordon Giltrap Guitar legend who has performed with the likes of Midge Ure and Sir Cliff Richard brings an evening of amazing guitar, witty chat and anecdotes about life on tour.
Friday, 6th November 2009, 7:30 PM at Hulland Ward & District Millennium Village Hall Eduardo Niebla Experience presented by Eduardo Niebla, Flamenco-gypsy-jazz guitar maestro is joined by a tabla player for this intimate evening of outstanding music from the Arab world, India and South America.
Live and Local put on many of their events in village halls with good facilities. Maybe one day, Live and Local events will take place in our own village hall…..

Congratulations to Margaret and the Professor

Congratulations to Dr Margaret Spurr and Professor Peter Young.
Last weekend they celebrated their new found friendship in Lincoln Cathedral with a wonderful service of blessing followed by a superb reception afterwards in the Cathedral Chapter House.
They are due to return to Parwich on Monday and we look forward to seeing them again and wish them many happy years ahead.

The 30th annual Manifold Show takes place tomorrow (Saturday 8th August), at The Arbour, Castern Hall, Ilam. Admission is £5 for adults, £3 for 12-16 year olds, and free for under 12s. Parking is also free.
Panoramic Five – Pictures From The Adult Race

Fell runners are a tough breed. Whilst most people would have taken one look at the drizzly weather and settled in for a night of reality TV, 63 intrepid individuals decided to take on the challenge of the very first Panoramic Five Fell Race. This race provided 5.3 miles of mud, stiles and inclines – most of which seemed to be going uphill!
Talking to a number of the competitors in the pub after the race, the event was favourably received. The organisation and marshalling of the event were particularly praised….so thanks Paul, Graham, Don and others who masterminded and organised the event. Thank you also to the marshalls and the Parwich First Responders for your time and trouble.

As part of National Parks week – a series of events have been organised in the Peak District. Several of them have a theme – Peak into the Past – 3 of the events are almost on our doorstep, one down Dovedale, another from Hartington to Pilsbury Castle & the third from Minninglow Car Park. Others are just a drive away. The events look varied, interesting and can involve all the family. Please note that some events must be pre-booked and others you can just turn up on the day.

Dovedale at Dusk
2 mile easy going walk, ‘watching and listening’ as the sun goes down. Meet Milldale car-park (GR: SK137547) at 7.30 p.m. finish 9.30 p.m. Torch useful. (suitable for familes)

Hartington to Pilsbury – 1066 and All That
Family Activity – A dramatised 3½-mile walk for families and history lovers, from Hartington to Pilsbury, helping celebrate the Festival of British Archaeology. Meet characters from the past, hear about archaeological finds. Children can wear medieval costume, sample medieval food, make banners. Booking essential on 01298 84992, £2 charge. ‘Embroidery around the World’ with Kathleen Mason has proved to be a very entertaining meeting with other WIs. She has a delightfully amusing way of getting her message across and enthrals everyone with her many items of embroidery from around the world. From her Pandora’s box of a suitcase, examples are revealed from many countries including India, China, Canada, Italy, Norway and Sweden. Kathleen is a talented speaker, so come along and enjoy the evening.

Pikehall Harness Racing

Tomorrow (Sunday June 14th) sees the first of this year’s two Pikehall Harness Racing fixtures. The first race starts at 2pm, and admission is £8 (plus free admission for children under 14). If you’ve never attended one of these events before, then it’s an experience which is well worth sampling.
