This is the technical question, do swallows mate in the air? Or are they just having fun in the air? For more detail click on each photo!

Not JF-S’s normal sleek, elegant and streamlined ornithological photo, but this cheeky pigeon is more like a vulcan bomber than a nippy spitfire.

First photographs of this year’s swallows, taken this morning by Fotografus J.F.Sessionatus, click to enlarge the photo. Bet they wish they were back in Africa – it is freezing outside.

The first welcome sight of swallows returning to Blanche Meadow came on 11th April – a few days later than last year. I wonder if the sudden cold snap has delayed them or was it just ours? Has anyone else in the village seen them earlier? At the moment we just have a couple which are usually followed a few days later by the main crowd. The sound of their incessant chattering always evokes thoughts of summer. I expect the next thing will be a sighting of our own familiar species of Fotografus J.F.Sessionatus or should that be Sessionata?

Bullfinch or Pyrrhula pyrrhula is “widespread” across the country but not often seen unless you are in JF-S’s garden. Click to enlarge.

JF-S, our talented ornithological photographer has finally hit the big time, as his photo of baby swallows feeding in Patti’s barn was published in the Ashbourne News Telegraph this week. But remember, you saw it here first!
Well done John.

Colin B says:
Our Spotted Flycatchers have successfully reared 3 chicks which have now left their nest and are flying about from tree to tree. You can see the smallest two being fed a tasty wasp in these pics.
