THE ADVENTURES OF ROBIN HOOD
This great, classic film starred Errol Flynn as the swash-buckling and daring hero, with Olivia de Havilland as Maid Marian, and with Basil Rathbone. It won 3 Oscars including Best Film score for the marvellous music by Erich Korngold. With a budget of $2 million, it was the most expensive film made to date, and one of the first to use the Technicolor process.

Now newly re-mastered from the original print, the superb costumes and sets look stunning; not a film to be missed!

We are going for a few days to Venice later this year. Can anyone suggest a nice modest hotel or somewhere to stay?

We shall be arriving fairly late at night, and I am not sure how easy it is to get to places after the water transport has ended.

We have received the following comment and e-mail from an imminent visitor to our area. If anybody is able to assist her, could they please contact the blog team at parwich@hotmail.co.uk.

A group of 22 family and friends will be staying at Uppermoor Farm, February 11th-14th, to celebrate my 50th Birthday.

I would like to organise a Treasure Hunt on the Sunday afternoon (13th) for my guests around the village of Parwich (on foot though, not chasing around in
cars). I have never organised a treasure hunt before, but think it would be an excellent way to get people out of the house to explore your beautiful village.

Pippa and Alan’s treasure hunt seems to have been a big success, and I was wondering if they would let me have a copy of their clues?

I hope this doesn’t sound too cheeky, and I am prepared to pay for the clues – or they could be our dinner guests on the Sunday night when we all go for dinner at a local pub.

Are Pippa and Alan still in Parwich, or has someone else taken over organising treasure hunts?

British Summer Time ends tonight at at 2am (Sunday 25th Oct), when the clocks go back one hour, so 2am becomes 1am (Greenwich Mean Time).

Tomorrow we get an extra hour in bed and lighter mornings, but darker evenings.  The current system will continue to 2011, when the Government are reviewing it.  What are your thoughts on the clocks changing?

My huge thanks to Wildgoose and all their delivery people for their kindness and consideration for my young horse. He’s recently had an operation and for his rehabilitation programme he has to be hacked out on hard surfaces in walk- for a horse who has just spent 3 months on box rest recovering, this is quite difficult! Wildgoose and co have been very considerate in stopping their machinery and vehicles when he gets frightened, so thank you. And of course a big thanks to all Parwichians who’ve been slowing down for him, your patience when passing in cars and on foot with dogs (very scary!) is greatly appreciated!

If you have a log burner and have bought yourself a briquette maker to make firelighters out of old newspapers, here is my top tip.  Drying them out in the top oven of the Aga is inadvisable as they may dry out more quickly than you think and then spontaneously set on fire as you open the oven door, giving you quite a surprise and smoking the whole house out and making your hair and clothes smell as if you have been in a house fire.

Did anyone happen to take a barbecue gas canister from outside the memorial hall at the end of July (after the school summer party on the last day of term)?   The half-full tank was replaced by an empty one – no doubt by someone thinking it had been abandoned.  If you have the canister, please email the blog or call Lynne on 474 so I can put the missing tank back in touch with its owner!  Thank you.

Update 28th Aug – Cuddles found safe and well! Julie and family send their thanks to all who were looking out for him.

Please can you help!

Our much loved family pet, the cat Cuddles, is missing, we have not seen him since late last week, around August 22nd.  He was last seen in Creamery Lane, Parwich.

He is white, with orange ears and orange stripey tail.  He should be wearing a green collar, but may now have lost it.

Please could you to check your sheds and garages as he is very timid and could have got trapped somewhere.

There is a Reward for his safe return, or for information as to his whereabouts, whether alive or not.

Village SOS is a major new initiative from the Big Lottery Fund and the BBC. They will be searching for six UK villages with a great enterprise idea to benefit their community. They are also looking for six enterprising individuals to act as Village Champions and help them achieve their ambitions. There will be a chance to show the nation, what villages can do with a community enterprise idea and what change it can achieve in rural areas.

Wills serve many purposes over and above ensuring your worldly goods end up going where you want them to.  They affirm our relationship to the world, and are an opportunity for us to have positive consequences even when we have died.  Not least we would know a lot less about local and family history with out them.

Frighteningly 60% of the British population have not made a will.  If you have a will, is it up to date? The charity Will Aid is launching November as ‘national make a will month’.

Participating solicitors give their time for free to make up new wills or to up-date existing wills.  The testator (the person whose will it is) is then asked to make a donation to the Charity, which supports various other organisations, including actionaid, the British Red Cross, Christian Aid, Help the Aged, NSPCC and Save the Children.

When we first moved to the village we were intrigued by the swan that always was present on the water on the left-hand side of the B5056   between the Bentley Brook & Bradbourne Mill.  It obviously didn’t take us that long to suss out that it was plastic, albeit pretty realistic looking.  Visitors who came to stay often would remark on it.  But when did it disappear?  Was it the recent flood-waters that washed it away?  If so, where is it now?

At this time of the year some of you may have surplus vegetables growing in your garden.  So if you have any good recipes that you are willing to pass on, please email them into parwich@hotmail.co.uk  

If you have more ideas for courgettes you could  add them to the comment box below. 

So if you have lots of courgettes and fed up with eating them as ordinary vegetables, here are a few ideas.  These recipes have been tested and only the successful ones appear!

2. Courgette Savoury Bake
3. Courgette Base which is ideal for soups or pasta (will freeze)

Thank you to Chris E. for forwarding the following grant opportunity.  Is it something that local groups could consider (e.g. The Memorial Hall for its work in developing the new Hall plans out of lextensive local consultation; the Village Action Group, perhaps to strengthen aspects of the Village Plan; or even the Parish Council to explore use of PARWICH.ORG to increase local involvement)?

Grants for new ideas to get people involved in democracy

Fresh ideas for encouraging people to become involved in democracy will be rewarded with grants under a £150,000 government scheme aimed at charities, community groups and non-government organisations. The Innovation Fund, launched by the Ministry of Justice, will support projects developing new ways to help people participate in public discussions and influence government policy. Grants of up to £15,000 will be available for up to 10 of the best proposals for using online tools, face-to-face events or a combination of approaches. Previous winners have included Speakers’ Corner Trust, which established a speakers’ corner and held a day of debate in Nottingham, and the English Secondary Students’ Association, which developed a training programme and supporting materials to help young people aged 11-19 learn how to campaign on issues important to them.
