Derbyshire Dales MP John Whitby is concerned about the O2 outage in Parwich  which is making life difficult for a significant number of us. He plans to come to the British Legion on Friday 24 October between 11am and midday to hear about the issues his constituents are experiencing. He has been in touch with O2 but, like us, has received no satisfactory explanation for the outage and why it is taking so long to fix. My understanding is that he has been in touch with the appropriate minister at the  Department of Science Innovation and Technology which oversees the sector.

The village bonfire and fireworks will take place on Wednesday 5th November, 7pm on Parsons Croft. Now the cricket season is over please start taking your branches to the same site as last year. Please respect the cricket square.

Country Girls Grill will be attending to keep us happy and fed. They will be serving from 6.30 – 8.30pm. Drinks will be available in the pavilion (proceeds go to the Parwich Carnival and Recreation Committee).

The next meeting of Parwich Parish Council will be held on THURSDAY the 16th October 2023 at 7:30 pm in the Memorial Hall.

Residents will see from the agenda that it includes provision to make arrangements for the retirement of the Clerk. After nearly ten years in this role I have decided that the time commitment necessary is more than I wish to continue to commit to. Unfortunately much of this is associated with the ever increasing requirements Parish Councils are expected to comply with. But I also hope that after this amount of time the Council will benefit from the fresh input and experience that another Clerk could bring.

The timing of this decision has been carefully considered in relation to the normal cycle of meetings, auditing, budgeting and Council elections so as to cause as little disruption as possible. None the less, some impact on the activities of the Council may be inevitable.

When advertising for the post begins it will be open to residents as well as those outside the village to apply. It is not necessarily a requirement that they have current, or previous, experience, or qualifications, as a Clerk. It is possible, as I did, to make use of suitable training and on-line resources to learn how to fulfil the role.

I will be supporting the Council, and residents, through this transition.

I have found my time as Clerk interesting to say the least. I would like to thank all those who have helped me over the years, especially present and former Councillors.

A reminder that the latest minutes of the Parish Council included a planned clean up day on Sunday the 5th of October.

This will take place between 10:00 am and 1:00 pm.

The following tasks were agreed

1. Removal of nettles form Pump Hill
2. Removal of bank vegetation where the brook approaches the Sheepwash and Jubilee Pond.
3. Litter picking.

During the meeting several members of the public indicated that they would help with these tasks if they could. Could anyone intending to support this work could confirm with the Clerk what they would like to do and if they would like refreshments provided at the end of the activity.

This will help with planning what happens on the day.

An “update” in early November is clearly unacceptable having had no signal since early August, so I have just been on Ofcom’s site here:  https://www.ofcom.org.uk/phones-and-broadband/service-quality/mobile-faults-guide which gives all the details of how to complain. They do not directly deal with individual complaints about mobile phone companies but will look into matters if they get numerous complaints about the same issues with the same company! They ask that you fill in a form so that they can monitor the situation which is here: https://ofcomlive.my.salesforce-sites.com/formentry/SitesFormCCTMonitoring  

There are alternative dispute resolution (ADR) scheme’s that will deal with matters (including compensation) and will help to resolve issues (advisable to read the  https://www.ofcom.org.uk/phones-and-broadband/service-quality/mobile-faults-guide first)

I’ve looked into things further and found this (applies to those with an 02/giffgaff contract):  

Under the “Consumer Rights Act 2015” a service provider must provide the contracted service with reasonable care and skill. I would argue that the service is not being carried out with reasonable skill and care if they can’t give you any service! 

In early 2009, Tom Prescot won a small claims case at Brentford County Court called Prescott v. Orange. (He was unable to get a proper signal at his office or house in an area that should have had good coverage. The claim was for breach of contract as he had an 18 month contract with Orange; Prescott argued that the contract implied a “reasonable expectation of service” given the long-term commitment of 18 months.

The result was that Mr Prescot was released from his contract & awarded £500 compensation.

Might be worth those of you that have a formal contract with o2/giffgaff to quote Prescott v Orange 2009 & Consumer Rights Act 2015!!

Last night this  happened? I live at number three Sycamore cottages. I put a note on the windscreen of a driver who had parked basically across my drive.

I woke up to this this morning. The table  l found by the playground.
