Artists to showcase Derbyshire in open art competition
Artists are urged to get creative about Derbyshire’s life, landscapes and people in the annual Derbyshire Open Art Exhibition.
DCC’s competition is fast approaching its 36th year and is open to artists of all ages, professional and amateur. The judges ask that entrants use Derbyshire to inspire their submissions.
Artists should use their entries to show what does this county means to them. The work could be a Derbyshire landscape, a town or streetscape, local people, still life or representations of local stories. Artists can use most media, including oils, acrylics, watercolours, drawing, print, collage, manipulated digital imagery or three-dimensional work. (more…)

The Much Valued Legion Sign
Posted in Arts, British Legion on Thursday June 30, 2016| 1 Comment »
The Parwich Royal British Legion have had a replica sign made so that they can protect Paul Burlinson’s original inside. Click here to see their original Facebook post on this.
You may have noticed that our Legion sign painted by Paul Burlinson has been missing since February, this was to protect the original from the elements whilst we made a replica to replace it to ensure we could protect such an amazing legacy which Paul left us. The original is now up in pride of place inside the legion, whilst the replica made by Cameron Jewitt and Joe Beech of Acres Signs and Graphics, is now placed outside to greet all our patrons.
Thanks to everyone who has helped us with this project and we hope you enjoy the sign as much as we do and also special thanks and remembrance for Paul who was a key member of the team here at Parwich Legion someone we all miss greatly. Here are some sign preparation photos.
It is particularly appropriate to be able to post this on the eve of the centenary commemorations of the Battlle of the Somme.

Be inspired by Derbyshire Open Art Competition
DCC has been running the competition successfully for 34 years and it’s open to amateur and professional artists, including children. The resulting exhibition is supported by Tarmac and the Friends of Buxton Museum and Art Gallery.
Entries for the competition must capture an essence of what Derbyshire means to the artist. The subject could be a Derbyshire landscape, a view of the artist’s street or home town, local people, still life or representations of local stories. Entrants can use most mediums, including oils, acrylics, watercolours, drawing, print, collage, manipulated digital imagery or three-dimensional work. The closing date for the competition is Saturday 11 June.
DCC’s Cabinet Member for Health and Communities Councillor Dave Allen said:
“Our exhibition has been attracting a wide and appreciative audience for over 30 years and I expect the same this summer.”I am delighted that we buy the winning entry to add to our art collection at Buxton Museum and Art Gallery which makes it available to view beyond the dates of the exhibition.”
Prizes totalling £2,250 – including a £750 first prize – are on offer along with the opportunity to display work at our Museum and Art Gallery in Buxton.
Prizes will be announced at the preview evening on Friday 24 June.
Artists can submit up to two works which must be handed in between 10am and 4.30pm on Friday, 10 June or Saturday, 11 June, to the Museum and Art Gallery on Terrace Road in Buxton.
An independent panel of judges will select the winners of nine prizes, including one for sculpture and also one for work by artists aged 21 or under. Visitors to Buxton Museum will have the chance to vote for their favourite while the exhibition is on − the Visitors’ Choice will be announced on Tuesday, 9 August.
You can find the rules and entry form online, at any Derbyshire County Council library or at Buxton Museum and Art Gallery. For more information call 01629 533540 or email buxton.museum@derbyshire.gov.uk.
The judges’ selection including the winning pieces will go on display at Buxton Museum and Art Gallery from Saturday 25 June until Friday 2 September.
