horticultural-talk

Stuart Dixon travels widely, sharing his love of the traditional English garden in “down to earth” talks to horticultural societies. He is a Royal Horticultural Society, Hardy Plant NCCPG & GCS and National Trust speaker, much of his knowledge and expertise being gained from the restoration of his own 18th Century garden at Hebb’s Farmhouse near Nottingham, which has been featured on BBC TV.  So come and enjoy an informative evening organised by The Horticultural Society – Another Community Event.

Growing Together in Parwich

Parwich SchoolParwich Primary School recently submitted a bid to provide funding that would enable them to improve our school grounds in a sustainable ‘green’ project.

Congratulations to the School; they have been awarded £7000, which along with the Morrisons’ ‘Let’s Grow’ vouchers (you can still leave any vouchers at the School) and the support of the local Park Rangers means they can begin to develop areas around school.

They have a plan, but now need volunteers to help make this a reality. If you or anyone within our community would like to be part of this project, please hand your name and contact details in to Mrs Rodgers (headteacher@parwich.derbyshire.sch.uk) at the School. The idea is that staff, children, parents and our community will work together.

Also, the Parwich & District Horticultural Society will be discussing how they can support this project at their AGM on Friday. So, members of the Society: have a think for Friday on how you help.

Consall Gardens

Martin C also has passed on this tip from his mother-in-law, Joan S (moved to Ashbourne but not forgotten), that Consall Gardens in Staffordshire are well worth visiting.  The Gardens are open every Wednesday, Sunday and Bank Holiday from Good Friday to the end of October, so there is still time to visit before the end of the mseason.  Would this be a good destination for a future Horticultural Society trip?

On reclaimed industrial land this 70 acres of landscape garden are the creation of one man, William Podmore, over many years.  There is interest through out the year.  (more…)

Manure poisoning vegetables!

Do you know about this weed killer that can be found in manure, and that damages vegetables?

Martin C asked us to check if people are aware of the risk from some manure to garden plants.  One particular hormone based weedkiller, aminopyralid, used by some farmers, can stay active in grass even after going through a horse’s digestive system.  Gardeners have recently been finding typical signs of damage with curled leaves (see photo from the RHS site) in their plants, particularly vegetables.

Gardeners’ Question Time’s Chris Beardshaw says, ‘It’s potentially a huge problem which can affect ornamental plants as well as vegetables.’ (more…)

Thank you to the Horticulture Society for the following write up of their 58th Annual Flower & Vegetable Show:

Despite the dullest August on record and flash floods the day before the Show, washing some regular exhibitors vegetables away, entries were only a little down on last year. However, despite this the village put on an excellent display.

The Horticultural Society are particularly grateful to the commitment of the judges. Mr R Hill of Dronfield worked particularly hard this year judging the local flowers as usual, the local vegetables in place of Mrs Hill who was unwell and also jointly the open chrysanthemum classes as the planned judge had to withdraw because of a family commitment. Mr W K Wilkins of Bradley judged the dahlias and jointly with Mr Hill the chrysanthemums. Mrs M Oldfield of Buxton, a former head of catering at M & S judged the home produce section. This was her first year as one of our judges and we hope we will see her again in the future. The organisers were particularly impressed that she noted that she was served an M & S quiche for lunch. Last but not least we would also like to thank Emma of Absolutely Fabulous in Ashbourne for stepping in at the last minute to very professionally judge the floral art.

The Society would also like to give a big thank you to all who worked so hard to make the day a success. As can be seen from the list of trophy winners below Tony and Rita very nearly swept the board. (more…)

Parwich Flower & Vegetable Show

The Horticultural Society offers its commiserations to all effected by the flood, and hopes you get sorted out soon.  It was impressive to see the Shop/Pub trading more or less as usual at the same time as the clean up operation was going on.  They certainly deserve to do well in the Best Community Pub award in ten days or so.  Well the Show must go on.

If you have any flowers, fruit or vegetables left (at least Mike and Dot don’t need to pick theirs, the flood has spread them across the lawn) please bring you entries along between 8am and 11am on Sunday morning (7th Sept).  If you crop has been washed away come along at 3pm for the auction of produce so you can still stock up your freezer.

SECRET GARDENS OF BAKEWELL from 2pm to 6pm on Sunday 24th August.

It is a chance to see parts of Bakewell not normally available, there are some lovely garden treasures tucked away, some are large & some small, with interesting plant collections and fabulous views – all are very access friendly. The gardens are situated around Bridge Street, Bath Street, Castle Street, Milford and Holme Lane, so it is a distinctly “watery” theme. Refreshments at the MEDWAY CENTRE, (near Lloyds Bank) with plant sales and Traidcraft. One charge of £4 at any garden entrance gives access to all gardens, maps also available from the Tourist Office. Visit gardens in any order. Free shuttlebus from Rutland Square, but the majority are only minutes from here. All proceeds will support the continuing work of OXFAM. Look out for green balloons on the day. All welcome! One that got away

Thank you to our reader who sent in this photo of a hanging basket that was not entered in the competition.  Hopefully they will enter next year.

Also although the baskets at the Sycamore Inn could not be included in the competition as they had been planted up by the judge, they are well worth seeing, so here is some photos of them as well:

Thank you to Parwich & District Horticultural Society for the following:

This year we revived our Hanging Basket Competition, which fell into abeyance some years ago. This was prompted by the donation of a Trophy to the Society in memory of the late Abel Shipley. Abel was born in 1915 at Warslow, but his family moved to The Croft in Parwich when he was three months old. He lived in Parwich the rest of his life, and retained an impressive memory of village affairs right up to his death. Many will have very fond memories of Abel.

As a child Abel worked on the family allotment behind their house, now gone unfortunately, and “every fortnight my mother walked me, aged 5, over to Warslow to clean and wash for my grandfather and uncle and then walk back again. This took us through Alsop, Gypsy Bank and Beresford Dale. (more…)

Horticultural help required…?

Amanda B. (at Hallgates) writes:

Since moving to the village I have enjoyed all of the villagers’ lovely gardens, and whilst I love living in Parwich, have become homesick for my own cottage garden which I nurtured and left behind before I moved here.

We have a er, ‘nature reserve’ rather than a garden at Hallgates and whilst I can appreciate its charm from a distance, I am unable to get anywhere near it to sort it out at the moment.

Basically, what I’d like to do is clear the whole area of overgrown weeds (including huge nettles, cow parsley and trees left to go a bit mad) and establish a space for vegetables, fruit bushes and a bit of a lawn. The challenge is that the ground is sloping and very densly overgrown.

I have neither green fingers nor lots of money to spend, although I am prepared to put in the time and graft involved. Right now, its growth has slowed – so I feel that maybe I should be dealing with the weeds using a systemic weedkiller, so we can see what we need to chop come the autumn.

Do any gardeners have any ideas on the best way to clear what is, really, a bit of a jungle?

Any suggestions much appreciated!

– Amanda

On Friday 17 of us set off to the RHS Tatton Park Show, it was a great day out, very warm and thankfully dry.  There was loads to see, the most amazing displays in the marquees, including vegetables, plants & flower arranging.  Outside there were the show gardens, back to back gardens & formal beds – some take a little while to get your head around.  There is also all the paraphernalia that goes with gardens, we came away with a greenhouse!!  Thanks to Dot for organising this trip for the Horticultural Society.

Saturday & Sunday
1.30-5.30pm

If you have never been to Winster’s Secret Open Gardens I can highly recommend it.  The afternoon is not just about the Gardens but it is a whole occasion.  With live jazz at one of the gardens, plenty of refreshments – cream teas in the Village Hall where you can also see the Winster Tapestry: whilst other gardens offer more refreshments from cream teas to home-made desserts with bucks fizz.  Visitors follow a garden trail around the streets and alleys of the village, exploring a wide variety of gardens. There is a Gnome Hunt for children.

There is very limited parking in the village itself, but two free car parks: at the top of the village (on the B5056 above Miners Standard pub) and at the Wensley end of the village (on B5057, next to the school). A Park and Ride minibus service (with wheelchair lift) run from the Car Parks to Main Street and back. Tickets are available from both Car Parks and outside the Market House in Main   Street.  Tickets are £3.50 per person (children free, but must be accompanied) and the event is run in aid of the Burton Institute, Winster’s award-winning village hall, and other Winster organisations.  There will be plants from Winster-based Peak Cottage Plants, and quality local crafts for sale.

Open Gardens and Flower Festival
Sat 5th & Sun 6th July
11am – 5pm – entry £4

With more than 20 gardens to visit, a flower festival, an art exhibition and a bell ringing competition there is plenty to keep you occupied.  Refreshments are available at the Legion Hall between 11am – 2pm.

Brassington is an attractive old village situated on a south facing hilltop and surrounded by spectacular countryside.  The fine Norman church of St James overlooks the village where there are some lovely old houses and pretty cottages set amongst narrow streets. Once an important centre for lead mining, there are still many remnants of the old industry to be seen in the area.

Thank you to Parwich & District Horticultural Society for sending us the following:

Everyone will agree that this year’s event has been a great success. The weather was a welcome improvement on last year. This year 17 gardens were open. The Horticultural Society appreciates all the hard work involved in preparing your gardens and tidying up afterwards, in addition to the time taken on the day; so a very big thank you to all who opened their gardens. Also well done Dot; the day ran smoothly, as always.  This is one of those great days in the year, like Wakes, when one is so glad to be part of such a marvelous community.  (more…)

Photographing seventeen gardens within the space of two and a half hours was always going to be a tall order. For Kevin S., who was forced to decline numerous offers of liquid refreshment along the way in the name of duty, completing the circuit represented an almost superhuman feat of endurance.

Kevin also found time to snap most (or was it all?) of the entries in this year’s scarecrow competition. Sincere apologies to anyone whose scarecrow remained undiscovered.

Despite the cloudy skies and the heavy winds, the gardens of Parwich looked truly magnificent this afternoon. Many thanks to all who took part, to all who visted, and of course to the Horticultural Society for arranging yet another successful and enjoyable event.

In the gallery which follows, our seventeen show gardens are displayed in numerical order, according to the official map: The School, School View, Stable Cottage, Wheatsheaf Cottage, Pool Croft, Town Head, Parwich Hall, Gardener’s Cottage, Knob Hall, Creamery Cottage, Orchard Farm, 6 Church Walk, Church Cottage, Flaxdale, The Fold, Walnut Cottage and Brook Close Farm.

At least one image from each garden has been chosen; usually there are two, and occasionally there are three. Again, our apologies to those gardens who received somewhat short shrift; time was very limited, and lighting conditions were far from ideal.

Our 2008 gallery starts “below the fold”. As always, clicky-clicky to make it biggy-biggy!

We would like to express our appreciation to everyone who contributed to a highly successful Open Gardens and Childrens’ Show.

Despite the wind, the gardens were looking beautiful and we would like to thank all those who invited us into their gardens and allowed us enjoy the results of their hard work.

Thank you also to the children who submitted exhibits to the show. Your creations were wonderful!

We would also like to thank you if you were involved behind the scenes – those who organised the event, donated plants, baked scones, served yummy cream teas, did the washing up….plus others who undertook the thousand other unsung jobs! Your efforts allowed us all to have a really good time.

When the heavens opened for last year’s Gardens Open Day, the “positive spin” went something like this:

“Well, it’s a good thing in a way; the true enthusiasts won’t care about getting wet, so the gardens will be less crowded and we’ll all get a better view…”

This time around, I’m guessing that we could all put up with the occasional bottle-neck in return for some halfway decent weather!

The good news is that the Met Office are predicting dry conditions for most of Sunday. As it’s always difficult to know which forecast to pick from the Met Office site (are we closer to Bakewell, Buxton or Sudbury?), here are the current snapshots from all three: (more…)
