This week’s Ashbourne Telegraph
Posted in Gardens, News, Wakes on Wednesday June 18, 2008| 1 Comment »
Local news features more this week in the Ashbourne News Telegraph with a stunning photo on the cover of a crashed car (although it perhaps panders to the voyeur in us it is a very good photo, hopefully the driver makes a fully recovery).
Stories that might be of interest to our readers include:
- The controversy over the proposed wind farm on Carsington Pastures continues. p.2
- A feature on Bradbourne Mill‘s conversion to houses and on the restoration of water wheels and part of the mill workings. p.6
- More sightings and a photo of a paw print of the Carsington/Ashbourne big cat. It has not been seen in our immediate area for several years that we know of; however, put up comments about any other sightings. p.7
- Drop in levels of reported crime in the Ashbourne Division, which presumably includes our area. p.9
- A whole page feature on Parwich Open Gardens (22nd June)with a photo of Pool Croft garden (though the photo of David & Christine’s garden is mentioned in the caption it seems to have fallen of the page), Wakes Week (28th June to 4th July) and the Flower Festival in St. Peter’s (4th to 6th July). So a busy couple of weeks ahead. p.20
- The successful Planning Appeal to keep the roadside windows of Church Cottage garden room, along with a splendid photo of Lynette. p.30
- A Public Notice from the Secretary of State for Transport for ‘the stopping up of a length of highway 35 metres in length on the B5056 at Bradbourne Mill‘. Copies of the draft order and plan may be viewed at Ashbourne Library for 28 days beginning on 18th June 2008. If anyone understands what ‘stopping up’ is, please let us know. p.47
- Summary of season statistics for Ashbourne Town Darts, including mention of our local teams. p.53
- Summer Football, including the results of Biggin’s two recent matches. p.54
As always let us know if we have missed anything.

Thank you to Parwich & District Horticultural Society for supplying the following:
Don’t let the children next weekend upstage the main Parwich Annual Flower & Vegetable Show, which this year is on Sunday 7th September. Now is the time to start thinking about what you might want to enter. Tony and Rita (well done you both) nearly swept the board last year, so everyone else start planning.

Solihull or Slough?

The driving ranges of Solihull or the roundabouts of Slough?

Having so far failed dismally to create a challenging observation task, here is one last go. All the photos below have been taken in the lanes of Parwich in the last three days. In which gardens or in front of which houses are these wonderful flowers (or vegetables) growing. Putting my money where my keyboard is, I will donate £25 to Project Parwich if anyone manages to get all 25 correct. Further if anyone submits a post with all correct by 6pm on Sunday 15th June 2008, I will double this, and give a box of chocolates to the winner. (If a number of people get them all correct by 6pm on Sunday, the winner will be drawn out of a hat or nearest equivalent.)

A ‘must-see’ garden
Posted in Gardens, Out & About on Thursday June 12, 2008| Leave a Comment »
Thank you to Richard Tresidder for forwarding this information. Fanshawe Gate Hall has one of the most charming private gardens in Derbyshire, and the Ramsdens have worked very hard to make it accessible to as many people as possible, at the same time raising substantial funds for charity. If you have not visited these gardens you certainly should (though not on Sunday 22nd of June, as that day is Parwich’s Open Gardens).

Open Gardens at Stanton in Peak
Posted in Gardens, Out & About on Sunday June 1, 2008| 3 Comments »
If you have never walked around Stanton in Peak I can strongly recommend it. We spent this afternoon exploring their Open Gardens. All the gardens are fairly small and a few you can see from the road, but the interest is really when you go down the little alleys and the cottage gardens at the rear, with some amazing views over towards Bakewell and Haddon Hall. The village really is perched on the side of the hill, with many of the gardens well terraced. Youlgreave Brass Band was strategically located in the centre of the village near the pub, providing a pleasant interlude. We didn’t try the Flying Childers, a freehouse, but some of the locals told us that they served good ale and food. I think that on one of the nice summer evenings (I’m an optimist) we’ll have a walk over Stanton Moor and call in at the pub. If you have tried the pub do leave a comment, maybe I feel a food review coming up.
Now I haven’t mentioned a tearoom in this blog, that’s because we didn’t visit one. However I was delighted to arrive home to find a goody bag on the doorstep, inside was a Passionate Carrot Cake from Chatsworth Farm Shop. It is delicious, moist, fruity, nutty and of course the carrots make it a healthy eating option, part of my 5 a day. So the next time you are near Pilsley I recommend calling in to either the Farm Shop or one of Chatsworth’s tearooms. Thank you Mike & Kevin.
Other Opens Gardens that are being well advertised at the moment are Bonsall’s on 14th & 15th June – 10.30-5pm, Birchover’s on 14th & 15th June – 1-5.30pm & Fenny Bentley’s on Sunday 15th 1-5pm.
Don’t forget Parwich Open Gardens on Sunday 22nd June 2-6pm.
Local Interest in Allotments
Posted in Classified adverts, Gardens on Saturday May 31, 2008| Leave a Comment »

The last allotments in Parwich went at the end of the Second World War. However, a few people have expressed an interest in again finding a place locally to grow some vegetables. It could be an unused part of someone’s garden or part of a field. If anyone has any land that they would be happy for others to use (rent could be in kind: vegetables or a bit of gardening) or if you also want to find somewhere yourself in or around Parwich please email parwich@hotmail.co.uk and we will pass the information on.

This year’s Parwich Open Gardens is on Sunday 22nd of June. Here is a sneak preview of Pool Croft garden sent to us by Dot and Mike (many thanks). If you would like to open your garden this year and have not already spoken to Dot, please give her a ring on 456. (Remember what people enjoy is the variety of gardens open: big or small, modern or traditional, manicured or wild, or just somewhere in between.) This year we are also having a hanging basket competition. Please let the Horticultural Society know about your basket(s) on Open Gardens day, and the judging will take place during Wakes Week.

What to do this weekend
Posted in Gardens, Out & About on Thursday May 15, 2008| 5 Comments »
The floral theme is strong this weekend with Saturday seeing the start of Carsington Flower Festival (see post below), of Ashford in the Water Well Dressings (continues till Sunday 25th May), and of the Bakewell Garden Festival (Saturday & Sunday).
It continues on Sunday, when Yeldersley Hall gardens are open to the public from 2pm to 5-30pm in aid of Osmaston Church and Primary School and a malaria project in the Gambia. The gardens are noted for their rhododendrons and azaleas, and for more details of the afternoon contact Joan Bailey on 01335 347012.
For the less horticulturally minded there is a historic railway walk from Rowsley Station on Saturday and an RNLI Fun Day on Sunday at Carsington Water. To find out more about these events see our EVENTS BEYOND page.
Also as Mike pointed out the Buxton Antiques Fair, which has already started, continues up to Sunday.
Don’t worry if you start feeling flower power withdrawal next week as Hognaston Flower Festival starts next Thursday, prior to the Open Gardens Season getting into full swing in June. When does anyone find time to do any gardening?
Gnomes.
Posted in Gardens, People, Project Parwich, Young people on Tuesday May 13, 2008| 3 Comments »
If you go down to the woods today you will see – gnomes – and lots of them.
Jane Harris’ garden has long been a source of attraction for gnomophiles. It has a reputation far and wide as Derbyshire’s Premier Collection of Garden Gnomes. They come in all shapes and sizes, and are known to multiply when no-one is looking.
The Collection is of particular interest to those of a whimsical and youthful nature, and visitors to the wonderful village of Parwich are often drawn to this collection.
This year Jane is extending a warm invitation to those who visit it to show their appreciation by making a donation to – hurrah, hurrah – PROJECT PARWICH.
Thanks, Jane!

Thank you to Di Turnbull for sending in this post.
What a great time we had planting up the border outside the hard play area.

Cloe, Courtney, Josh and Dan helped to put down the stone around the access paths and seating area a few months ago and were keen to help with the design and planting of this area too. And what a help they were – fantastic! We planted through the weed-suppressing membrane, adding fresh compost and fertilizer, covering the plants again with the bark chippings. Keen to learn, their enthusiasm never wavered in the three hours it took to make the area look attractive. Josh did, however, remind us of the importance of being finished by 6.20pm, for ‘Doctor Who’!
They all said that they were going to ask others to take care not to walk on the area and to keep it looking good. A sense of ownership? – I think so.

We would like to thank Dorothy for all the hard work she has put into creating a woodland garden on the Parish Council land in front of Parwich Hall.

Click here to see an example of some pages made with the WordPress blogging software for the Horticultural Society.
We would welcome your thoughts on how this works, and whether other local groups might be interested in something similar for themselves?
