Welfare Fund Charity Event
Posted in British Legion, Oddfellows, Welfare Fund on Monday February 7, 2022| 1 Comment »
On behalf of the Parwich Independent Welfare Fund….
On Saturday January 29th, Parwich Legion allowed us to hold a fundraising event in their club room, hosted by the Oddfellows, to raise money for the fund which supports members of our community when they need it.
The event was so well supported that we managed to raise a total of £2,380, which is a fantastic amount. A major part of this was the auction, which raised £1,060.
We would like to thank all those who donated all the raffle prizes, auction produce, knitted products, and cash donations we received, we were absolutely overwhelmed with the amount of items donated in support of our cause. We would equally like to thank all those people who bought tickets for our event and varying raffles, draws and the quiz as well as those who made winning bids for our auction lots (and those who helped to get the bids up) and all those who supported us on the night.
We would also like to thank the following who helped make this event run so smoothly:
- The Loyal and Laurel Crown Lodge (Parwich Oddfellows) Bill, Rob, Jimmy, Mick and Roy for staffing the BBQ, managing our ticket sales, delivery leaflets and supporting us throughout.
- Rob for running the Mr and Mistress competition,
- ”Dolly Dealer” Gill,
- Karen for helping with the raffle,
- Auctioneer legend Paul
- Bar-person extraordinaire Sarah for keeping all the glasses full.
- Parwich Legion for allowing us told hold the event, for their generous donation and for supporting our ticket offer.
Some of the night’s winners were:
- Guess the name of the bear: Dave S
- 4.5 gallon bottle of whisky: John W
- Mr and Mistress: Jacqui J and Alan S
- Quiz: 1st Lucy M, 2nd The Brants, joint 3rd Janice W & Ed L.
- Play Your Cards Right “big winners”: James S and Carl W
If you’d like to see the quiz with (or without) the answers click on the appropriate link below:
Thanks again,
Carl and Emma.

The Parwich Oddfellows are holding a charity event at the Legion on Saturday 29th January. The event will raise money for Parwich Independent Welfare Fund. The sole purpose of the Welfare Fund is to provide help and support to people and on occasion to groups and societies in the village. Traditionally the funds have been raised through the annual harvest festival auction; however, this hasn’t happened for the last two years (due to COVID) and so funds are very depleted.
Details of the event and timings etc. will be posted shortly, but for now please put the date in your diary!

Thank You

Val, Simon, Phil and Rosie want to thank everyone for their support over the last few weeks, and especially on Tuesday. It was very much appreciated to have so many friends and villagers at the church to welcome the funeral cortege, with special thanks going to the Parwich Oddfellows who gave a guard of honour for John.
There is an audio recording of the eulogy given by Mick Edge which we will try and post somewhere when technology allows, for those who were unable to come into the church and hear it in person.
Donations received are to be split between Ward 216 at Royal Derby and Cancer Research UK, the total currently stands at just over £800.
Thank you again x
John Kirkham

A thousand years of celebration
Posted in Carnival & Recreation, Church, History, Oddfellows, Wakes on Saturday June 27, 2020| 2 Comments »
Villages’ Wakes grew out of communities celebrating their church’s patron saint. For us that is St Peter whose feast day is the 29th of June, still used to to calculate the start of Parwich Wakes; our Wakes beginning on the nearest Saturday to the 29th of June.
The current St Peter’s Church was built in 1872/73, replacing the smaller Norman building also dedicated to St. Peter. We can see some features of the old Church today in the current building, including the tympanum over the west door, the archway of the west door, the archway between the tower and the nave and the carved faces high up in the side chapel. It is thought that the old church was built in the late eleventh or early twelfth century and would almost have certainly been dedicated to St. Peter as it is unusual for the dedication to be changed. It is possible that there was a previous Saxon church here, but the evidence is inconclusive.

So we have been celebrating as a community at the end of June for at least nine hundred years, though perhaps much longer. These celebrations from the start would have included a lot more than just a church service. Processions and theatricals would have been included, possibly by the fourteenth or fifteen century involving a play celebrating Robin Hood and Maid Marion. The prettiest or best dressed youngsters might even have be elected to be that year’s Marion and Robin, a precursor to out Carnival parade and fancy dress competition. It is likely that there were local sports, foot races and perhaps archery competitions, certainly when archery practice was compulsory from the fourteenth right up to the sixteen century. ‘Beers’ were a big part of the celebrations, where local guilds and groups brewed beer to sell during the revels. This tradition was revived not so long ago with the Oddfellows Ale, brewed by Leatherbritches. The ‘beers’ raised money either to fund candles and devotion in the church for each guild’s favourite saint or to help guild members when times were hard. (more…)
