What is this bird?

bird

Is there someone in the village who knows what this bird is, I took poor photos of it 20 mins ago in our garden. Been through the books and struggling to identify it, thought initially it was a wagtail, but the markings are not quite right. It looks most like a Shore Lark, but if it is it must be lost!

Tomorrow and Sunday see the RSPB’s Big Garden Bird Watch, there is still time to register for that. (Click here for more information.) However we are suggesting that we also do an Alsop, Ballidon, Pikehall and Parwich ‘Little Garden Bird Watch’.

The RSPB Big Garden Bird Watch involves counting the birds you see in your garden for one hour at some point over the weekend. We are suggesting a simpler note of what species our readers happen to see in our area on Saturday and/or Sunday. Just put your list in a comment to this post, or email it and any photos you happen to take to parwich@hotmail.co.uk.

The weekend of 24/25th January sees the RSPB’s Big Garden Bird Watch; those wishing to take part can find out more and register by clicking here.

The RSPB say:

Bird populations are a great indicator of the health of the countryside. That’s why it’s so important to take part in surveys like Big Garden Birdwatch to keep an eye on the ups and downs of the wildlife where we live.
All you need to do is spend an hour over the weekend of 24-25 January counting the birds in your garden. It’s that simple!

However, we wondered if there was any interest in doing a Big Ballidon/Alsop/Parwich/Pikehall Bird Watch the same weekend? Let us know your thoughts by commenting on this post or emailing parwich@hotmail.co.uk .

There are a number of possibilities, including:

  • Those wanting to participate in the RSPB count could simply send us the same data with any photos they might take.
  • Alternatively the more energetic could set off to see how many species they could count anywhere in our area.

    Artists to Africa

    Artists to Africa

The arrivals and departures of summer migrants, such as Swallow, House Martin and Cuckoo, hint at the changing seasons and deliver a sense of connection with distant lands. In January 2014, a team of four SWLA artists accompanied the British Trust of Ornithology’s Head of International Research on a trip to Senegal. By bringing artists and scientists together we set out to raise the profile around some of the issues facing our African migrants.

Welcome to Parwich to Lynn C and family, it is always good to have new contributors:

My son and his girlfriend were climbing at Cheedale (Wye Valley) yesterday and found a young buzzard with a broken wing at the base of the cliff. With only a blue IKEA bag to capture and carry the buzzard, they beat a hasty retreat back to McMurtry & Harding in Ashbourne. We thought people may like to see a close up shot of the bird. We are waiting to hear how the buzzard recovers.

    A Persistant Pigeon

    image

This racing pigeon appeared during the rain yesterday morning. In the afternoon I found it in my kitchen trying to open a bag of bird seed. It would only go outside when I took the bird seed out. It is getting on well with my cat, but is reluctant to move out of the way so I can use the car. As the weather is beginning to deteriorate again this evening, it wants to come back into the house.

Thank you Debbie W for responding to our call for more photographs, though these are perhaps a little outside our area. However in August we allow some latitude (some 72 degrees in this case):

Although I’m no John F-S or David G, thought people might enjoy the attached. I write this while on holiday here at my dad’s house in upstate New York (Canandaigua, Finger Lakes region).

I found a nest on his property while picking wild blackberries. Field research means I now know it is a bird called an American Goldfinch? I decided to take one photo a day, at the same time each day (10:00 am) and gave myself approximately 1 to 2 minutes to get the shot to ensure as little disturbance as possible to the nest and contents. I’m being watched closely by ‘mom’ who flies to a near by tree and watch – and scold me rather loudly – during each photo ‘session’.

    The story so far…

Three more photographs added 22nd August 2014, and a further three photos added 23rd Aug:

Yesterday all was quiet on the nest front, everyone was asleep. Today they were awake and hungry! It is really interesting to note that some birds are now opening their eyes, and also the feathers are beginning to come in for their wings. I counted five little beaks – so far all eggs are still accounted for.

    Another photo added 25th Aug:

    More ‘Swallow Watch’

Do you remember this photo from July, of the swallows amazing skill of drinking whilst still on the wing?

    image

Well this recent fledgling illustrates that is a skill that has to be mastered, pictured here by John F-S ignominiously flat on the water and then taking off again.

This afternoon I witnessed a female blackbird stalk, catch, kill and eat a shrew. In Church Farm garden, a small shrew was having a feast of insects and grubs amongst leaf litter and well rotted manure, when it was seized from behind by the female blackbird, who killed it by repeatedly picking it up and dashing it on a hard surface. She then avidly consumed it.

Does anyone know if this is usual?
