Simon’s retirement

As most now know Simon is retiring from the Postal Service.  He has been delivering our letters for the last 11 years, always with a friendly smile and often going well beyond the call of duty.

You can still leave your messages and a donation for his present at the Shop in the Sycamore or with Martin and Jean at Gibbons Bank.

The presentation will follow the Methodist’s Xmas Concert in St Peter’s at 2.30pm on Sunday 13th December, when there will be mince pies and refreshments.   Every one is welcome either for the concert and mince pies, or just for the mince pies afterwards.

Please could you let Martin or Jean (tel. 529 martin@orchidserve.com) know if you would like to attend so that they can make sure there are enough refreshments for you!

Well here is a picture in of our son and Parwich’s newest resident (well if no one has moved in since the 1st), Samuel Frank Harrison. He was born at 06:45 on the 1st November in the Royal Derby Hospital weighing in at 8lbs 10oz. I am very pleased to say that both he and Gill are doing great and Sam is now back up to his birth weight.

Best regards Matt, Gill, Izzy and Sam Harrison

Thank you to Caroline Colvin for sending us the following.

I read on parwich.org that you are gathering information on the people named on the war memorial and have read with interest details already posted. I believe the following information relates to the THOMAS HADFIELD named on the war memorial and may also be of some interest:

poppiesPte THOMAS HADFIELD, Lincolnshire Regiment, died 15/07/1917. Vlamertinghe New Military Cemetery, Belgium.

THOMAS was the son of Isaac and Sarah Ann (née Kirkham) Hadfield who lived at Lenscliffe, Parwich.

Thomas seems to have worked as a railway flagman before joining the army. He joined up to 6th Battalion, Lincolnshire Regiment, in August 1914 (reg. no. 10594), and served for a total of two years 323 days before he was killed in action (place unknown) on 15/16? July 1917. (His documents state he was 28 years old on joining the army in 1914, although this does not tie-in with his age on various other documents, census records etc.)

Though Remembrance Day is technically the 11th of November, usually we mark it on the nearest Sunday, which this year is tomorrow the 8th November:

  • In Parwich Church there is a joint Anglican and Methodist Remembrance Service at 10-15am.
  • In Alsop Church the Remembrance Service is at 10-45am

To understand more about the origins of the Poppy Appeal and Remembrance Day click here to see our last year’s post.

The deaths in Afghanistan make Remembrance Services much more immediate this year, but there are also reasons closer to home that make this year more significant.

Given our Memorial Hall is currently being rebuilt, it is a good time to think about how we remember those who gave their lives.  The names on our War Memorial and where they are buried can be seen by clicking here.  The majority are buried or commemorated overseas, but Pte Ronald Cotterill and Trp Robin Philips who died during World War II are buried in Alsop Church Yard.

Parwich & District Local History Society is gathering any information on the people named on the War Memorial (e.g. Brunskill Lowes), so please send any information you have to them or to us here at PARWICH.ORG.

Sudden death of Lionel Webster

Our sympathies to the family and friends of Lionel Webster who died suddenly aged only 61 years on Monday 26th of October.  Many will know him through his jeweller’s shop on the Market Place in Ashbourne, where for several decades a reliable traditional service was provided with a smile.

Although living near Buxton his roots were here in Parwich.  He spent his childhood at Church Farm, where his family moved after leaving the Sycamore Inn in 1903, obviously well before Lionel was born.

Outside his busy professional life, he was president of the Leek and District Football League.

Staffordshire Police say:

Just before 7pm on Monday 26 October officers were called to a home in Barlaston. Paramedics were already in attendance but, despite their efforts, a man was pronounced dead at the scene.

At this time, the man’s death is being treated as unexplained and officers are making further inquiries about the circumstances surrounding the death.

The deceased has now been formally identified as Lionel Webster, 61.

A 67-year-old woman and a 74-year-old man, both from the Barlaston area, were arrested in connection with the incident. They have both been bailed, pending further inquiries, until early December.

A name from the War Memorial

Hopefully this is only the first in a series of posts letting us know something more about the people behind the names on the War Memorial in St. Peter’s Churchyard.

(Jack) Brunskill Lowes (1912 to 1944)

Thank you to Alan for sharing this information on his father who died on active service on the India Burma boarder during the Second World War.

Brunskill and AlanJack Lowes was born in 1912 and spent his early childhood in Workington on the Cumbria coast. His father apparently abandoned the family, resulting in his mother putting her three children into the workhouse. Jack was aged 11years, his brother Thomas aged 9 years and their sister Elizabeth aged 3 years. Elizabeth died of pneumonia within three weeks of admission to the workhouse.

Jack and his brother were moved to an orphanage near by where he remained until aged 14 years, when he was sent to be a farm labourer.

Obviously Jack had his sights on the wider world and aged only 16 years he joined the Lancashire Fusiliers. (more…)

Congratulations to Peter Harrison

It is good to hear about the successes of former residents, and the Rev Christopher Harrison must be very proud of his son, Peter, gaining a scholarship to Clare College, Cambridge.  Well done!

Peter has been awarded the organ scholarship at Clare, to begin next autumn. He will be reading maths and physics alongside this.

It was of course very useful, in previous years, having a village church with a freely accessible organ on which Peter could practise, and he played for services on several occasions both at Parwich and other churches in the group. He also received a good training in church music by being in the choir at St Oswald’s church, Ashbourne.

Over the past four years at Winchester he has been taught by Malcolm Archer, who was previously director of music at St Paul’s Cathedral, and also by Paul Provost, who was organ scholar at St John’s College, Cambridge. In Nottingham Peter now plays for some services at St Mary’s, and also sometimes sings in St Mary’s choir.

British Legion

Yesterday saw the launch of this year’s Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal.  You can donate on-line (click on the poppy above to go to the Royal British Legion website) or get your poppies locally at the Parwich Legion and the Sycamore Inn.

Obviously the memory of those who died in action is more to the fore this year as we are rebuilding the Memorial Hall, part of our community’s recognition of their sacrifice and a celebration of what they fought for.

In celebration of a village wedding

Hasn’t it been a wonderful autumn for weddings, and today the Blog was sent the following:

What a beautiful village!” “I thought villages like this existed only in novels”, “What a wonderful church – it’s so well looked after”. “How lucky you are to live here.” “Isn’t everyone so friendly?” “What an idyllic setting for a wedding.

These were just some of the comments that our guests (from all over the world) made when they came to Cassie and Dan’s wedding. They are right, it is a wonderful church and village but it takes many (unseen) hands to make a happy occasion such as this.

Even Christopher Harrison found the most beautiful apposite poem about a wedding surrounded by green fields, called ‘Epithalamium’ by Francis Warner, to use in his address at the wedding.

So with the help of the blog may we say thank you to our particular unsung heroes, who worked so hard to help make the church beautiful for Cassie and Dan’s wedding. We make no apology for some very flagrant advertising for some of our local craftsmen and women who deserve our support. (more…)

Today Michael Stokes of MDS Stained Glass installed the new stained glass window, designed by David Pilkington, in the Lady Chapel. This exquisite window commemorates James Hetherington (2002-2004) and his great-grandfather Joseph Thornton (1903-1992). The location of the window is particularly appropriate as it is next to the Millennium windows, also designed by David Pilkington, to celebrate all the children living in the parish in 2000.

Hello. My name is Diane Brown. At the moment I live in Atlow where I have lived for 12 years. I am looking for a house to rent for now, with a possibility of buying in the longer term: preferably somewhere with 4 bedrooms. I’m sure you’ll all agree that Parwich is a beautiful village, so of course I am interested in finding somewhere there.

I run my own business Potions Club which some of the children in your village have been to, so I’m already a bit known in Parwich. I have been keeping an eye out on your website and will continue to do so. Thank you very much.

Reminiscing

Hi there!

I just want to say how much I like your site!

I have no links with Parwich now, which makes me feel very sad, but after viewing your site I have a warm glow and stimulated memories.

My father’s was Frank Gibbs, brother of Leonard, Harold,Jessie,Audrey and Kenneth, son of Charles and Norah who lived on Lenscliffe. If any of your viewers have any information or photographs about any of them I would be very, very grateful. Also if anyone has any information of a Christina McMicking, who I never knew but have a piece of writing which she wrote about my father when he became Mayor of Glossop in 1960, I would love to be able to contact her or members of her family.

Parwich is held in soft spot in my heart and will always remain so. The fun I had at Wakes week as a child and even more fun as a teenager!

Keep up the good work!

Carole Bennett (nee Gibbs)

PS. It was great to watch the video of the wakes week walk, I was impressed by the number of young people there, all members of the Oddfellows Society.

Thank you to Carole for sending in this post, if you have any information that you would like us to pass on to her, either add it as a comment or send it to parwich@hotmail.com and we will forward it onto her.
