Although those last patches of snow mentioned last week finally disappeared from the village, it was not long before a covering was back.  Certainly over the last day or so, the weather and roads have been our most popular topic for posts – and the cold spell is set to continue.

Severe weather warning for Derbyshire.

Heavy Snow from 1200 Sun 20th to 2200 Sun 20th.

Snow showers will become frequent and heavy at times during today, these showers merging into longer periods of snow at times. Accumulations of 5 to 10cm of snow are expected, with 15 to 20cm possible over higher ground. There is also the potential for some drifting, mainly over higher ground, in fresh to strong westerly winds.

Apologies from the Parwich on-line weatherstation

Apologies from our on-line weather station (the links are always displayed in the weather section of the right hand column):

Those of you who have a keen interest in live local weather readings will have noticed a problem with our Parwich weather station data over the past few weeks. Intermittent problems with the hardware have led to some data being unavailable for periods of time, and the station is presently down. We think we have now located the source of the problem, and hope to have the station up and running again shortly.

In the meantime please accept our apologies for the incomplete data – especially over this extreme weather period. I can tell you the temperature in Parwich dipped to around -6 degrees C overnight, and the cold spell looks to continue into next week. Might we be in for a white Christmas?

As the storm approached on Friday evening the temperature rose briefly to 12.2 C, after the readings had been taken at around 6.00pm, almost as high as Tuesday daytime at 12.3 C.

July this year has been particularly wet, with more than three times the rainfall than the same month last year.  Unfortunately the jet stream looks set to flow over the UK all next week – so not much chance of a heatwave!

Showers coming our way

If we get any clear nights over the next fornight and you’re out after midnight, lie down on the ground away from bright lights, look up into the night sky and admire the meteor showers that we will be seeing in our skies.  The best time to see them is between midnight and dawn.  The showers  should get better and better each night until they reach peak activity on the night of Wednesday 12 August, when you should be able to see as many as 60 “shooting stars” flying through the sky every hour.  JF-S / Graham / Mike H / Colin B / any other local photographers – a photo of a shooting star over Parwich would be fantastic.

Fortunately the rain stayed away for J & L’s daughter’s wedding yesterday.  Best wishes to the bride and groom.  We were also lucky for last night’s concert, the rain continuing to hold off while we had refreshments in the churchyard, only starting towards the end of the second half.

Wakes weather as was

18mm of Friday’s 25mm rainfall occurred in around 1 hour from about 9. 00 am.  A lot of people were keeping an eye out on water levels.  However we were luckier than Ashbourne, where in Parkside School flooding sent the children home by 10am.

Storm clouds over Parwich‏

With these high temperatures and humidity, the energy in the atmosphere has to go somewhere, and tonight, it came to Parwich. This picture was taken at 7:30 pm tonight 29th June 2009. The cloud formations were spectacular, and what you don’t get from this still picture is the turbulent movement in the formations. Though there are rumblings and flashes, so far, as of writing this, we have been spared the storm.
