We have just received the following from Derbyshire County Council:

21st January collection update
Because of the overnight snow, today’s scheduled waste and recycling collections are on hold. We’ll be inspecting the roads later to check if it’s safe to collect. In the meantime please leave out bins and bags.

Please note it’s not just the condition of the roads on today’s scheduled rounds that are a concern, but also roads to and from our depot at Longcliffe.

Many thanks

The County Council have announced that QEGS will be closed today. We will try to keep everyone updated:

Queen Elizabeths Grammar School, Ashbourne
21-01-2015 06:13 AM GMT

The school is closed to students and staff today, due to the snow. This decision has been taken, at 5.50am, based on the weather in Ashbourne and surrounding areas, and after consultation with our school bus suppliers.

Click here for the latest updates on school closures on the County Council website. Highfields in Matlock is also closed.

Snowy Roads

The snow has started, but the weather forecasters are uncertain about how much there will be. So, as the night progresses and in to the morning, do keep other readers updated if there are any problems on the roads:

Wednesday, 7am: Lynne G. reports

Just heard from a friend that the A515 is closed between us and Ashbourne because of a jack knifed lorry. The news was on Ashbourne Radio but I’ve also found it here in case anyone’s looking for updates:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/travel/2656981/incidents/road

The County Council website reports conditions are worse in the north of the County with so far the only other reported road closures north of Buxton.

Wednesday 8.15am: Cheryl W says:

I’ve just got to work and the road block is at the Bentley Brook Inn heading towards Buxton. The road from Parwich to Ashbourne is passable with care at the Parwich end but clear in Ashbourne.

Wednesday 10am: If you are traveling north, don’t forget about the Buxton Weather Watch website as they post people’s updates about road conditions pretty regularly.

Is road to Ashbourne open?

Does anyone know whether the road from Ashbourne to Parwich is clear? Marlous and Ferdi, our (Dutch) guests from Tom’s Barn, have had to camp at the Travel Lodge in Ashbourne overnight and need advice. They certainly won’t get up the hill to Orchard Farm but will they get to Parwich okay? I don’t think they or their car are used to icy roads…be very grateful if anyone has any up to date info. Thank you!

Christmas Forecast

Our Weatherman in the Village says:

Having been touched by Anthony C’s kind comments following the last weather report posted before my weather station started playing games, I thought a Christmas forecast might be in order to try to anticipate the conditions for the big day. So, will it be or won’t it be …….. a white Christmas?

Sadly, the only white likely on Christmas day is frost this year, with snow being pretty unlikely as I write this. Monday and Tuesday look like being mild, windy and damp, but the temperatures look set to drop as we move through Christmas Eve with the possibility of a frosty start on Thursday morning followed by a similar day on Friday.

So it’s a Happy Christmas to one and all from The Weatherman in the Village and here’s to a 2015 punctuated by great weather- my New Year resolution this year will be to fix the weather station!

Weekly Weather Stats

Our Weatherman in the Village sends his apologies, but

I am sorry to report that the recent technical issues I am experiencing with my weather station mean that unfortunately I shall be suspending weather data for a little while until I resolve the problems properly. The live link to the station will still be open, but please be aware that some readings may not be accurate at this time. I will endeavour to resolve the issues as soon as possible, and hope to resume the posts then. In the meantime, those who thought last weekend was a little chill will be relieved to know that the –64 Celsius recorded was slightly lower than reality!

Update: The links are in the Weather section of the right hand column of each page to the Blog. There are two links:

Our Weatherman in the Village says:

After a very mild Saturday, temperatures look like dropping to more normal levels with a cooler period in prospect. Monday looks like being dry and bright followed by damper conditions mid-week and hopefully a return to dry conditions later in the week.

There may be the chance of some overnight frost this week, but not much prospect of fog, so the clearly displayed contact details of our long suffering Parish Councilors will be continue to be visible on the notice board ( – as they were this week when I walked by)!

Looks like being relatively dry in the early part of the week, with wetter conditions returning towards Thursday and Friday. Temperatures near normal for the time of year.

Our Weatherman in the Village says:

We recorded a surprising 17.8 degrees c on Friday which is a temperature we probably won’t see again until next spring now. The week ahead looks cooler with more seasonal temperatures. There is the prospect of overnight frost later in the week, but not too much rain in the forecast.

Our Weatherman in the Village says:

Mild and generally dry conditions for the beginning of the week followed by lower temperatures and uncertainty toward the end of the week. The benign weather of 2014 continues …… wonder what the winter holds?

Our Weatherman in the Village says:

A big Atlantic low has been feeding warmer air across the country for the past few days resulting in unseasonably warm weather. This is likely to change during the week to more normal late October temperatures. The unsettled theme continues through the week with bands of rain being driven through by strong winds. Typical autumn conditions.

The average temperatures have dropped considerably in the last week and also similar to last week today (Sunday) looks like being a good day, the rest of the week is looking typically autumnal with bands of rain and wind in prospect.

Our Weatherman in the Village says:

It looks like autumn has finally arrived, with a change in the weather pattern disrupting and probably finally banishing our glorious Indian summer! While today (Sunday) looks like being a good day, the rest of the week is looking typically autumnal with bands of rain and wind in prospect along with cooler temperatures.

Weather Stats: Sun 21st to Sat 27th Sept

image

Our Weatherman in the Village says:

This glorious late summer keeps on giving. It’s hard to believe we’re nearly into October with this sun and warmth. High pressure looks like continuing into the working week, so no obvious significant rain on the horizon.

Our Weatherman in the Village says:

With high pressure continuing to dominate, the weather looks set fair for the foreseeable future. Certainly the working week ahead looks dry and warm in the daytime, but the nights will be cool. Looking forward to next weekend, although obviously harder to predict, it seems likely we might be in for a repeat performance of this one. My apologies for the continued absence of rain data – it is on my “little” list of jobs to do ……

Our Weatherman in the Village says:

The unseasonably cool weather continues with the average max and min temperatures significantly lower than last week (and they were low). Although the temperatures are cooler than normal, it can’t be said that conditions are particularly unpleasant. That is until tomorrow – which, in true British Bank Holiday tradition, looks like being a wash out. The rest of the week in prospect looks like being a little better with predominantly dry conditions interspersed with breezy showers.
