Butterflies Galore

Thank you Saskia for these photos and the following:

Hasn’t it been a fantastic year for butterflies? I still have tens of Small Tortoiseshells, some Peacocks, a Red Admiral, a Brimstone and a Painted Lady (I hope I’ve got their names correct!) feeding on the Valerian and Buddleia , whilst others are sunning themselves in the late Autumn sun. The only one that I haven’t seen this year is the spectacular Humming-bird Hawkmoth.

What visiting butterflies have you seen in your garden recently? (I’m a complete novice so only recognise the very colourful species!)

Saskia T

More photos of any other species taken locally are most welcome. (Fiona, if your verbena is still so busy, that might make a great shot.)

Triffid?

Triffid 004

Please can someone identify my rapidly growing plant? I bought it at the Horticultural Society stall on Open Gardens day as an unnamed small plant in a pot. Since then it has threatened to take over! I think it might be a squash or pumpkin or something from that family.

Can anyone make use of some heavy duty paper sacks which hold 20kg in weight? Ideal for storing vegetables.

I am in the process of digging up rooted pieces of white lilac if anyone has a space in their garden needing to be filled.

Puzzled?

Puzzled – can anyone enlighten me?

I came across a couple of, what I presume are, clusters of eggs in the garden soil and wondered what these are?

20130725-171347.jpg

The size of the round (eggs) is approx. 1 – 3 mm, the diameter of the cylindrical cluster is approx. 15-20 mm, the colours are yellow (pale mustard) with a few blue (almost cobalt).
They look like sections of baby sweetcorn without the central core.

I am intrigued to know what this is – can anyone tell me?

Following the Open Gardens our readers may be interested in this competition launched by Derbyshire Dales District Council. Here is the Council’s press release:

The Blooming Dales’ celebrates beautiful district

The beautiful gardens and community spaces of the Derbyshire Dales are to be celebrated in a new competition.

The Blooming Dales‘ is the idea of this year’s Chairman of the District of the Derbyshire Dales Councillor Peter Slack.

Despite a rainy start to the day, Open Gardens stayed mostly dry, attracting more visitors than had initially been expected, and raising around £1100 in ticket sales, plant sales and cream teas. Seventeen gardens opened this year – up from eleven last year – and it was particularly good to see a number of new additions to the list of regular favourites.

If any of our readers is able to supply us with photos of the Childrens’ Show of paintings and plants in the Memorial Hall, we would delighted to share them. In the meantime, here is a small selection of photographs taken on the garden trail.

Parwich gardeners alert –
Barley straw for the strawberry patch

After this nice drop of rain the strawberries are in flower and the fruit are developing well. Now is the time to protect the fruit from damage by the soil and slugs by laying barley straw around each plant. I have just acquired a bale of barley straw from a local farmer. I have far more than I need and if any Parwich gardeners want to protect their strawberries with barley straw, they are welcome to help themselves to my surplus straw – just come round to Flaxdale House with a black bin bag and I will gladly supply their needs.

Flower Power

Celebrating flower power in the beautiful Dales

Flower power across the beautiful Derbyshire Dales is being celebrated through a new free publication.

‘Floral Dales 2013’ is a leaflet produced by Derbyshire Dales District Council, featuring dates and details of local well dressings, open gardens and flower festivals. The colourful guide is available from visitor information points across the Dales, including Ashbourne, Bakewell, Matlock Peak Rail and Matlock Bath. It is also free to view and download online at www.derbyshiredales.gov.uk/touristguides.

Tissington Well Dressings, on now until 15 May, is the first of 26 well dressings festivals in Derbyshire Dales villages and towns between now and mid-September.

The guide’s ‘Hidden Gems’ section features a list of open garden weekends at private houses that do not normally open to the public, and there’s also a ‘Meet the Experts’ schedule of top gardeners who open their gardens as part of the National Gardens Scheme.

Gardening help needed

Is there anyone who would be interested in a few hours gardening per week, just over the summer time? I am out of action for a few months, by which time the weeds will resemble triffids.

You will need some ability to tell a weed from a flower, as the work involved is mainly herbaceous weeding – definitely no heavy stuff.

If you might be interested, please contact Patti Beasley on 390206.
