Dorothy L’s wooded area has once again been glorious. The daffodil display was spectacular and now we have the treat of the bluebells. For those lucky enough to wander through the meandering paths, there is a special peaceful feel to the place. The sunlight dappling though the leaves onto the flowers below is magical. Dorothy kindly allowed our roving reporter to take some pictures. Click on each image to enlarge it.

Today the planting was completed (well almost) at the Memorial Hall.  There are 8 plants outstanding, which will be planted when the grass seeding is done in September.  All bar one of the beds has been muched and this final one will be covered over the weekend, once we have planted the hundreds of snowdrops that were donated by different people in the village.

It is super to see the final phase completed ready for the Official Opening on the 25th September, to which everyone is invited.  Again a huge thank you has to go to the Horticultural Society for their massive financial contribution towards the planting and to those individuals and groups that donated the 5 trees.

Open gardens was a fabulous success with many folks making the most of the weather, the great new Memorial Hall, the beautiful gardens and the tasty cream teas.

Over £800 was taken on the door and the day netted over £1350. This is money that will be used by the society to benefit local causes with a horticultural bent, as a thank you to the village for putting up with the disruption of Open Gardens.

Those who were involved in the cream teas worked incredibly hard all day and really appreciated the new kitchen. The new Hall looked stunning with the tables decked with checked table cloths and flowers.  The displays from the children were super, but unfortunately entries were well down on previous years despite the monetary rewards. With the doors opening out on to the patio many visitors were able to enjoy the new seating area.

The committee would like to express their thanks to all those who opened their gardens and made the day such a success.

OPEN GARDEN AT CULLAND HALL, near Brailsford
Sunday 25th April 2010

The Plant Fair will be open from 11:00 am to 4:00 pm, tickets are £3.50 (children free) and there is ample free parking. Refreshments will be served all day. In addition to plants for sale there will also be French and Shabby Chic garden furniture and a variety of quality gardening goods.

This is the fifth annual Open Garden and Spring Plant Fair and it is in aid of local charity ‘The Mid-Derbyshire Association for Mobile Physiotherapy’, which has been providing home based physiotherapy for over 25 years to housebound, and often isolated people, living in the Derbyshire Dales area.  There will be unusual plants for sale from leading specialist nurseries and RHS exhibitors.

Culland Hall garden is featured in this month’s edition of Derbyshire Life, using some of Debbie W’s photos.

Culland Hall is based in an idyllic position on parkland which was laid out in the 18th century; although there has been a house at Culland since the 12th Century. There are 5 acres of garden as well as a lake. The owners, Simon and Lucy Thompson are well acquainted with the house and gardens, as Simon’s father bought the estate in the 1930’s (where he built a new house on the old site.) (more…)

Thank you to Andy & Jo, Phil K, Emma, Sue H & Patti for either potting up or letting us dig up parts of their garden and relieving them of some of their snowdrops.   Once the Memorial Hall grounds have been landscaped, we will plant these bulbs in drifts in the bed near the entrance.  If you have any spare clumps of snowdrops in your garden, please pot them up and let Jane (665) or Glynis (561) know.
