PARWICH CROWN GREEN BOWLS CLUB

Thankfully we got back to winning ways, albeit by the smallest of margins in one match, but a win is a win as they say and anything was better than Christians and lions like last week.

Matlock Tuesday bowls league
Home – Whitworth Park – 13 May

As I said anything was preferable to last week’s embarrassment. We had a really good match. It was two games each, Edith and Rick producing the best score for us, as usual winning 21 – 10. Sue A and John B also scraped a win. At one point they were 15 – 5 down, but came out on top 21 – 20 and that point made all the difference as the final result was Parwich 73, Whitworth 72. Having plummeted from the giddy heights of top of the league to seventh, hopefully this win will halt the slide. It will need to as we are due to play Youlgrave on their green next week. It could be another massacre!

  • Next match – Away – Youlgrave – 20 May – 6.30pm.

Matlock Thursday Friendly League
Home – Matlock Bath – 15 May

There are some games that even if you lose you can enjoy the games and your opponents, playing Matlock Bath is one such fixture, add to that a good win as well and what more do you want out of life. After the three doubles we were 7 points behind, with Dennis E and Audrey B leading the way 21 – 11. Again our singles players did us proud winning 5 out of the six games. Tony A, Harry B, and Dawn A showing how it should be done. The score for the singles was a convincing 86 – 52 to Parwich giving an overall result of 132 to Parwich 105 to Whitworth Park. Good game equally good company.

  • Away – Chatsworth – 22 May – 1.45pm.

The village annual meeting takes place next Wednesday and the Bowls Club will be there trying to drum up new members. Come and have a word next week.

Winning Run Broken

PARWICH CROWN GREEN BOWLS CLUB

It can happen to any team, look how Manchester United have slumped! Only one league match this week, thank goodness. Heaven knows what our score would have been if we had to play twice.

Matlock Tuesday bowls league
Away – Buxton Park – 6 May

So you can’t win them all. To say we lost this week would be an injustice to Buxton. It was carnage. Edith and Rick played out of their little skins otherwise I doubt if we would have got to double figures. It really was that bad. Anyway I will not give details of the result as I do not want the information for all to see on Parwich’s worst ever result as it will scar the participants for life. WE ARE NO LONGER TOP OF THE LEAGUE!! We are at home next week. Hopefully we will be better, we certainly can’t do any worse, or can we?

  • Next match – Home – Whitworth Park – 13 May – 6.30pm.

Matlock Thursday Friendly League

No league match this week instead we played our club Square Robin competition, which is a variation of a Round Robin, but with corners (you will have to work it out for yourselves). Although the weather was unkind to us towards the end of the contest, it was a very good afternoon and two new names will appear on the trophy, Tony A and John B. Next week back to the league.

  • Home – Matlock Bath – 15 May – 1.45pm.

On Sunday we are due to play another Club competition, the Open Singles. The fun starts at 2.00pm. Why not come down and join us.

Join the Winning Side

PARWICH CROWN GREEN BOWLS CLUB

So, four weeks into a new season and still no new members!! Where are you all? Anyway here goes another waste of space.

Matlock Tuesday bowls league.
Home – Chatsworth B – 29 April

Having done really well last week with a bit of a scratch team because of players being away we were back to nearly full strength this week. Rick and Edith were back to their imperious best winning 21 – 10. We managed to win two more of the remaining three games and only just lost the other. The final score was Parwich 82, Chatsworth 57. Not a bad result when you consider the maximum points you can score is 84.

We will certainly lose in the next few weeks, but at the moment WE ARE STILL TOP OF THE LEAGUE. The chances are it will be next Tuesday as we are playing a very very good team with lots of members.

  • Next match – Away – Buxton Park – 6 May – 6.30pm.

Matlock Thursday Friendly League.
Away – Whitworth Park – 1 May

We were doing reasonably well in this league, but we came unstuck with a vengeance this match. Whitworth were top of the league and after their display against us will no doubt keep them there. Those of you who read this twaddle will know we very often struggle in the doubles and this week was no exception. We did get close in one game, but were handsomely beaten in the other two. Whitworth 63, Parwich 34. We did fair a little better in the singles, but again lost 81 – 71. Rick M and Edith (no surprise) winning, with John H only failing by one shot. The overall score 138 – 105 our worst result so far.

Next week we have a ‘blank’ week so will be playing a Club tournament. Why not come and have look.

  • Next match – Club match – Square Robin – 8 May 1.00pm Parsons Croft.

Winning Run Continues

PARWICH CROWN GREEN BOWLS CLUB

Now the scary thing is that we are playing quite well and have only lost one match so far, and that was a close call.

Matlock Tuesday bowls league.
Away – Matlock Bath – 22 April

As I mentioned last week we are so short of players that Audrey B had to step in and help us out and she helped us out with a vengeance. Audrey playing like a demon and just about assisted by John B won the game 21 – 13. Dennis and Clara E also came up winners 21 – 17. Rick, without his usual sidekick Edith, won brilliantly with Dot a fabulous substitute playing equally like a demon. Our remaining pair only just lost their game 21 – 17. The overall score therefore was Parwich 80, Matlock 62. Not bad for a scratch team.

To cap it all we are still miraculously TOP OF THE LEAGUE!

  • Next match – Home – Chatsworth – 29 April – 6.30pm.

Matlock Thursday Friendly League.
Home – Matlock Park – 24 April

“Long Ride To Victory”

Thank you to Graham J for this report of an intrepid group of local cyclists in South Africa:

A few weeks ago, 4 intrepid Parwich cyclists crossed the equator to meet up in glorious Cape Town and take part in the World’s biggest cycle race – the “Cape Argus”. After having trained through the depths of a Peak District winter, it was pure joy to be transported into high summer overnight, with the prospect of a legendary bike race to boot!

Thank you Helen for forwarding this update. There is usually a good sized Parwich contingent going to the Dovedale Dash, so many will be sad to hear the event is cancelled this year:

On Tuesday, 29 October 2013, 18:16, secretary@dovedaledash.co.uk wrote:

We regret that we have had to cancel the Dash this year. The Pastures where we normally park 400-500 cars is waterlogged and not getting any better. The forecast for the weekend is for further rain and strong winds. Our regrets for the cancellation. We put off making a decision until the last moment in the hope of an improvement in the weather.

The next Dash is November 2nd 2014.

Graham Johnson has sent in this urgent request:

Over the past five years the team involved in organising the Parwich Panoramic Five fell race on the first Tuesday in August have run 5 successful races and raised over £1,500 for the Memorial Hall, which was the original reason for instigating the event. It’s been a great evening which has been well supported by the running community and by the village.

The success of the race could not have been possible without our fantastic team – all of whom have critical tasks which they discharge with skill, diligence and without fuss.

It has been a privilege for me to work with such a great group of public spirited people, but after careful thought and an increasingly busy day job, I intend to bow out of my role in this now.

I am happy to support anyone in the process of organising the race, which starts now for 2014, but I may not be available on the race night, and will only be able to offer support and guidance if anyone wants to take it on.

Please let me know quickly if you know anyone who wants to fill my slot because of the need to complete the FRA permit application before 31st October.

Thanks.

Graham Johnson.

Bowls Season ends

Parwich Crown Green Bowls Club

To coin a phrase or two: ‘Now is the time to say goodbye. Now is the time to yield a sigh until we meet again some sunny day’. Well something had to be said on the last match of the season. It’s a pity we did not end the season with a good win let alone a poor loss!

Matlock Thursday Friendly League.
Last match – Away – Chatsworth – 12 September.

Chatsworth are nearly at the top of the league and needed a good win to perhaps secure promotion. We certainly did not hinder their cause. We did not win any of the three doubles games, indeed we were 39 points down before we knew it. Chatsworth 63, Parwich 24.

The singles again gave us valuable points. We won four out of the six games, but our opponents were digging in really well. Although we won the singles the deficit was too great to make up and the final score was Chatsworth 133, Parwich 99. We were approximately half way in the division, but with this heavy defeat we will almost certainly drop some places. Still we should not finish bottom!!

The indoor bowls season starts in early October so if you would like to give bowls a try in the nice warm atmosphere of Ashbourne Bowls Club contact a member of our club. It really is a good game and quite easy to play. The indoor mats are only 45 feet long so you do not have to be as strong as an ox to play.
